In political media and advertising, there is usually what’s referred to as a “call to action” style of communication.
This simply means that someone is trying to get someone else to do something. When it comes to politics and advertising, people are trying to convince other people to give them votes, and give them money.
Politics and advertising both use the same science to figure out what the most effective methods are to convince people to actually get up and act. Whether that action is getting up and voting, or getting up and buying something, the methods are identical.
It has been discovered that the most effective way to get someone invested to the point they will actually do something, is by creating an emotional response. This is why so many advertisements feature families, animals, and other symbols of emotional depth.
The easiest emotion to create in an audience, however, and the emotion that is felt the deepest by viewers/readers, is anger.
Anger is the easiest to trigger, and when people feel anger it escalates the quickest.
So whenever possible, media outlasts, politicians, and to a much lesser degree, advertising, will trigger anger in order to get an emotional investment from their audience.
It is carefully calculated and contrived.
Such pervasive causes of anger may have a big effect on society. It does feel as if there is more violence on the world today than there was in the past. This feeling may or may not be accurate. Perhaps the focus on creating an anger response predicates itself on politics and media focusing on violence, or perhaps there actually is more violence and perhaps this constant anger-triggered call to action communication contributes to that.
A repeated and sustained exposure to media designed to cause anger may even cause anger to become a more natural reaction to other stimuli that otherwise would not be met with an anger response, and cause us to feel more anger, frustration, and stress than would be natural for us.
I ran a small experiment on the Destiny 2 forum. I made 2 posts, some days between them so they wouldn’t interfere with each other.
One was an emotionless analysis of Destiny 2 season 8, with well thought out and relatively clearly presented suggestions on what might be an improvement to upcoming seasons.
The other was an inflammatory post with a suggestion that would be predictably ill-received, and written in a tone that was engineered to be inflammatory.
The first post got zero likes and responses. The second got an overwhelming number of downvotes, and a significant number of negative responses in a relatively short time.
While this isn’t definitive, it is a microcosm example of how we can be manipulated into responding and engaging.
If we aren’t self aware, we can eventually slip into a habit of switching between two modes. One mode is to act from anger, the other mode is to not react at all.
When watching, listening, or reading anything in the media, politics, or advertising, try to be aware of the emotional response you feel. If it’s anger, try to take a moment and analyze your feelings and shift into a non emotional state before deciding what to decide based on what you’re hearing.
It’s important that we attempt to live in a state of compassion as much as possible, and think with clarity, free of the manipulation that is so pervasive in almost everything we see and hear and read.

9 RespuestasGood post Hoss. This kind of sparked a thought in me. I would love to know how much has been donated to political campaigns across America in the last 20 years. I would love to see the actual cash amount, because it has to be huge. Can you imagine what we could have done with that money? The things we could have accomplished for our country? Oh well, it is just a thought. People are free to waste their money how they see fit.

I wish i could give a post more than one upvote

Man, I wish the mods would pin this thread so it'll always be above all the political tools here.

Definitely agree that more compassion in today's society would not be a bad thing.

To PERSUADE the listerner to do what the advertiser or the political group wants. So NEVER watch an ad....or a political speech....with the naive notion that they're there to EDUCATE you. No. They're goal is always to get you to see things their way....and to tell you ONLY enough to get you to do that. ....and every kind of manipulation that isn't EXPRESSLY forbidden by law is "fair" game. So you need to be aware of your feelings, so that people can't manipulate you by provoking your anger, or triggering your fears. Or pandering to and flattering your arrogance and vanity. You need to be aware of what the objective truth is...so that people can't manipulate you by "manufacturing consent" and only telling you what serves their interests to know. Knowledge is power...so those who have it have power over those who do not. Which is why the most dangerous things you can do to yourself is to only get your information from one source and one point of view. While that may FEEL good. To always be told your right, and NEVER have what you believe is right-and-true be challenged. But is the intellectual equivalent of being put into THE MATRIX....and then allowing those who constructed it around you to USE you like a battery to do whatever suits. them. “Success is the important thing. Propaganda is not a matter for average minds, but rather a matter for practitioners. It is not supposed to be lovely or theoretically correct. I do not care if I give wonderful, aesthetically elegant speeches, or speak so that women cry. The point of a political speech is to persuade people of what we think right. I speak differently in the provinces than I do in Berlin, and when I speak in Bayreuth, I say different things than I say in the Pharus Hall. That is a matter of practice, not of theory. We do not want to be a movement of a few straw brains, but rather a movement that can conquer the broad masses. Propaganda should be popular, not intellectually pleasing. It is not the task of propaganda to discover intellectual truths.” ----Joseph -blam!-. Reichminister of Propaganda. Especially never lose your skepticism of those who are telling you that you are always right, and whatever it is you want to hear. NO real person, or real society is always right. Beware the Terrible Simplifiers, and those who would have you scapegoat others for your problems.

last year the was a police officer killed by an illegal immigrant. "illegal immigrant kills cop" was the headline of the day. it bothered me that the murderers citizenship was being discussed so much. all the outrage was over the murders paperwork. our president even chimed in. 3 police officers were killed in the following week. the stories were barely told because calling Americans "cop killers" doesn't sell papers.

8 RespuestasAgree with this 👆 post for the most part. "Folks" have been conditioned to focus on their "feelings" more than their thoughts. Its gross that imo only the "elite" are allowed to be thinkers. Everyone else is to be manipulated tax cattle to be corralled and exectuted in whatever "purpose"(teehee purpose) they desire. And we do so gladly, cuz real emotions other than chemically induced(medicated) happiness isnt allowed. "Gotta be, gotta be... Happy.."
