This week alone there is 30,830 worth of bright dust items from just the Solstice. I expect it'll be up over 50,000 by the time the event is over.
Bungie also flooded Eververse with exotics instead of legendaries this season (went from a conspicuously low 8 exotic ghosts, sparrows and ships in season 6 to a whopping 22 of them in season 7)
Oh yeah, they also require bright dust in the tribute hall for no discernable good faith reason.
So here is some math. If you got exotic ships for every engram 9 times a week (assuming 3 per character) then it would still take 34 weeks to earn enough bright dust for just season 7 and the solstice. And that's not a realistic scenario. (Hope you started saving last December) In reality, you just can't earn it anymore.
Now to you who say "so what?" Well we used to be able to earn it all. It used to be part of what I got for my money. Now suddenly it's not. When I bought Forsaken and the annual pass this sort of content was available by playing the game and all statements by Bungie indicated and still indicate that it should and would remain that way. Now they suddenly, without any reason beyond greed, want to charge me more for this content, after they already have my money, and I'm supposed to be okay with that. No, just no. Honestly, in what other world does that work?
Edit: Showing my work. Yes it's rough, someone else can go into more detail if they want but from what I figure there's roughly 150k of Eververse items in season 7 if you include Solstice. 9 engrams per week at exotic drops is 500 each or 4,500 per week. 150,000 / 4,500 = 33.3 weeks. Now that's not realistic, you won't get all exotic drops, you will get lots of legendaries and even emotes and ornaments you can't dismantle. Sure you can get some back from bounties but in the end I think my 4,500 per week is probably generous. If someone wants to give me a harder number on the total bright dust cost for the season then I'll update it.
Edit 2: I'd also like to make clear that part of what is so infuriating is that I did grind out the whole set on three characters and got every single glow last year only to have it all made obsolete the next month. I shouldn't have to spend 15k bright dust and grind out an entirely new set of armor that's barely a reskin of what I already earned last year.
Edit 3: I feel like a meme I made might help convey how I'm feeling: https://www.reddit.com/r/destiny2/comments/ckk4ad/on_behalf_of_all_the_other_guardians_you_rear/
