Hello y'all. Today marks the return of my political philosophy series. On this post, i will attempt to tackle and explain a very difficult topic. The reason this topic is hard for me to explain is that Modern Liberalism is still in practice today. This makes it hard to summarize for two reasons
Reason #1: There is No Unified Position in Modern Liberalism.
26% of Americans claim to be liberals within that group, there are many sub-sects of modern liberalism. The reasons for this division among modern liberals will be explained later in the post, but reason number two is very similar to reason number 1
Reason #2: What it Means to Be a Modern Liberal is Changing Rapidly.
We all now know with much infamy the name Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, or the name Bernie Sanders. These two names are very important to the discussion because the are pushing the modern liberal further and further too the left. Now, don't get me wrong, there are plenty of liberals who do not like either of the two, i would be one of those, but i espouse a more classical liberalism than a modern take on it.
The part of this will be about distinguishing modern liberalism from classical liberalism. A lot of it has to do with their views of the role of government. All forms of liberalism believe in equality and freedom, it is a fundamental aspect of the ideology, but what divides a modern liberal from a classical liberal is the execution. Classical liberals tend to espouse the idea that reducing the government's role will create a freer, more equal society. While modern liberals believe that government is the tool to make society better. Both of those positions contain some validity, but today we are going to look deeper at the modern aspect.
In modern liberalism, a primary goal is ending societal oppression. In the eyes of a fair amount of modern liberals is that oppression is one of the greatest threats to equality and freedom in society. The conventional belief is that the government is the best approach to ending oppression. This goal tends to foster policies that give favor to oppressed groups in order to balance the scales. The oppressed subject is not just limited to people, but also can mean the environment, or specific species of animals that have fallen by the wayside. As with any system, this approach has had its successes and failures.
The cause of the multifaceted being of modern liberalism is that modern liberals don't all agree on which entities are oppressed, and how the government can best end the oppression.
Some advocate that the market be more free, others believe that the free market is the cause of oppression and so on and so forth, then after a group selects an issue to fix, then they have to decide how to fix it. this two step process is very time intensive and very quickly divides people.
I hope i explained adequately what modern liberalism is, and as always, if i messed up my summary, let me know and i will try to fix it.
Cheers,
HoTh

1 RespuestaHere’s an interesting interview with Noam Chomsky about neoliberalism. As you can probably guess - he’s not a fan. https://www.thenation.com/article/noam-chomsky-neoliberalism-destroying-democracy/

2 RespuestasEditado por Speaker: 7/20/2019 11:45:38 AMGood take; modern liberalism can also be characterized by blind naivete. I wonder what modern/neo liberals would say if everything they wanted was made reality; ie: all the 1% brought low and their wealth redistributed. Every little gov program your heart desires and and and a ubi. Little would change except the government deficit would quadruple in the course of a year I'm guessing "It's not my fault! I was just trying to be on the right side of history!" Then Russia invades to "stabilize the region"... Morp

10 RespuestasBunch of bs. It's obvious even to the person who doesn't follow politics closely that modern liberalism is socialism. An ideology that not only threatens freedom, but human life in general.

It's like neither want to actually 'win', but they want to bludgeon those who disagree with them to death because that is what is important to them, not the causes.

2 Respuestas*sips coffee* I can never understand how people can narrowly define their existence with terms like Left and Right, Liberal and Conservative. Seems kind of silly when you think about it.

13 RespuestasI don't really see the mainstream far left as liberals at all. They identify as progressives anyways, and they mingle with self-proclaimed socialists and communists. I wouldn't conflate the two any more than I would conflate conservatism and libertarianism. It's unfortunate that the overall image of the left has been so distorted by the far left that moderate liberals and left libertarian types have been disaffected and are virtually "politically homeless" now.
