So one issue a lot of people have with Destiny’s antagonists (Save for a few Antagonists in my opinion. Great job with Oryx and Uldren, Bungie), is that they don’t necessarily feel that compelling per say. In the end, it’s typically a giant bullet-sponge of a boss. I think that in order to make these “Nightmares” a truly compelling and terrifying enemy, we need to have some sort of personal attack towards us from them. While yes, taking the form of our enemies can be considered that, I’m talking about something more drastic.
This would ultimately capitalize on the Nightmares’ ability to shape shift and would probably have to be done as a cutscene due to game mechanics, but I think this could work.
Alright. The setting is in some typical dark cavern on the moon, what’s new? The Guardian and Ghost happen to be examining a steep crevice in the cavern, when a Nightmare in the form of Ghaul knocks the two off. When The Guardian awakens, Ghost is right there to help. He/She let’s Ghost get close, only for Ghost to actually be one of the Nightmares (keep in mind, it’s merely taking the form of Ghost.) and The Guardian is attacked. The Nightmare is swiftly killed and then the ACTUAL Ghost finally finds The Guardian, only to be shot by a very paranoid Young Wolf.
Ghost wouldn’t be DESTROYED of course, just damaged. The Guardian is shocked, and quickly scoops up the ghost. The cutscene ends and now the player has to fight their way back to Eris while constantly getting spooked by Nightmares. After the mission, Ghost is repaired (it’s happened before). Of course, Ghost happens to be FURIOUS with the Guardian and it takes a while for the two to get back to being the 100% non-argumentative team they were before.
I think that would not only present the Nightmares as something to be reckoned with, but it would also add some character development for Ghost. One thing that feels unnatural to me is how Ghost just goes along with everything the Guardian does no matter what, despite how much we hear in the lore that Ghosts have very vocal opinions and will disagree with their Guardians. All of this would capitalize on the established shape-shifting of the Nightmares.
MAJOR Spoilers for Spider-Man Far From Home. You have been warned.
I got this idea from Mysterio and how he uses the drones to create this illusions meant to put down and terrify Peter Parker. It was a very creative way to make Mysterio a compelling villain without some drastic character death or something of the sorts. The line “Maybe if you were better, Tony Stark would still be alive”, really showed the audience that this guy was a “monster”. Destiny needs moments like that. Moments where the antagonists actually antagonize the player. I get Bungie tried that with the Fanatic in some ways, but it was always kinda dismissed or put out in an underwhelming way. For ex, they could have done more guilt tripping on the player in Vanilla D2 for failing to stop Ghaul and the command ship.
You don’t necessarily need a big villain who does bad things per say. The villain needs to be compelling and well written into the story. If you want an example, Vincent from Collateral is an INCREDIBLE antagonist and I recommend watching it. If you want to have a big bad gigantic genocidal villain that is compelling and well written, then Marvel Studios’ Thanos in Infinity War is a great example.
Okay. That was my idea. What do you guys think.
