Dark Souls?

Hi, my friend is a huge Dark Souls guy, and I know nothing about anything in the game, but I am interested... Where should I start, and should I get into it?

  • Start with the first. If you start with the third, you’ll end up being disappointed with the other two games. Or if you just want to get the “Dark Souls but not” title out of the way, Dark Souls II.

    • Yes you should get into it because it’s one of the better game franchises out there. It’s one of those games that you’re gonna have to force yourself to play to eventually fall madly in love with it. At least that’s how I got into it. The music is part of what kept me going. I started out with 3 which is a really good place to start but I personally recommend you start from the first. There’s certain story elements in the 3rd that you will appreciate so much more if you play the first. When it comes to the 2nd game the community is very divided. Most will tell you to avoid it like cancer. I haven’t played the 2nd so I can’t really say much about that. But you never know. You might like it more than the others. The games heavily reward exploration with shortcuts that will allow you to bypass difficult areas you previously had to fight through. So now you can rest a little easier knowing you don’t have to deal with all that crap all over again if you die. DONT BE ASHAMED TO ASK FOR HELP OR LOOK UP GUIDES ON THE INTERNET! in fact I highly recommend you do. The side quests in this game do not hold your hand and are unforgiving. The game does not give you any instructions or any directions aside from some npcs pointing you in a general direction. If you try doing these quests on your own will most likely result in you getting lost or failing the quest. Completing these quests often reward you by making your play through easier by giving you useful items, weapons and npc summons that can help you clear difficult areas and beat certain bosses. If you have any complaints about the game’s difficulty or bosses keep them to yourself. You will only be met with “GIT GUD.” So if you do decide to pick up this beast, be patient, have fun and may the flames guide thee.

    • Patience is key, and death is meaningless. Whatever souls you lose you'll gain back anyway, just try to find the next bonfire and you'll be good. Remember boss attack patterns. You'll come across bosses that you'll find have bullshit attacks that can't be avoided. Don't think that, you'll get caught whenever you get greedy on your attacks. Know when to attack, and pull back to avoid getting hit. People have done no-hit runs on these bosses, some on bongo drums. And don't get DS2.

    • I started with DS3. Took a bit to get into it but now I love. Got DS1 remastered, but haven't really put in the effort to beat it. I'd recommend DS3 to start.

      • Honestly bro you just gotta dive in. Dark souls 2 has the best pvp with a more forgiving story while DS1 and 3 have a tougher story. If you’re looking to “get into it” start with dark souls 1 but dark souls 3 will probably be a better bang for your buck.

      • I'd start with either dark souls 1 or 3. And a few tips: 1. Watch your stamina. Your stamina is your everything. It let's you attack, roll, and block, and if you run out of stamina you lose the ability to defend yourself. 2. Explore your surroundings. Items are hidden everywhere, including items that may give you more estus (the stuff that let's you heal), or improve the healing you get from estus, or better armor and weapons. 3. Damage is great and all, but if you have an easier time using a different weapon that has a lower damage, use that weapon. It's a lot easier to keep using the weapon you're used to using than it is to make a complete change. 4. Do your research. Research what all the stats do, watch videos for tips and tricks for starting, play around with your other weapons when you're safe to do so (you might find something you like better). However, I don't recommend researching how to fight bosses or anything like that because it takes away from one of the main points of the game: learning. 5. Be patient. Keep a level head. You will get angry and frustrated from time to time, but you gotta maintain your cool or else you'll only play worse. If you need to, walk away for a bit and take a break from the game. If you're really having trouble with an area, you may not be ready for that area, in which case you can move on to a different area for the time being. I'm still relatively new to dark souls, but this is what helped me starting off. Hope this helps.

Start with Bloodborne. But if you don’t have a PS4 start with Dark Souls 3. It’s the “newbie” friendliest of the Dark Souls games. It’s more modern and consistent than earlier Souls games as well. I love Dark Souls 1 but it’s a little dated and clunky now. Skip Dark Souls 2 - it’s the worst of the Souls games. My biggest tip would be to slow down. Patience, timing and learning enemy placements and movements is key. This is not like your usual hack and slash game. Prepare to die (often).

        • Dark Souls 1, 2, 3 are all medieval fantasy settings, while Bloodborne moves between Gothic Victorian and Lovecraftian Surrealism. In all four, the storytelling is implicit, i.e. all plot points and backstory is told through world building, speaking to characters and reading the lore page that every item has. This is a huge advantage in many ways, but some people prefer a more traditional form of storytelling. If that's you, be aware you're not really going to get that with this series. If gameplay is your main draw, the big difference between Souls and Bloodborne is speed. The Dark Souls trilogy is slow paced, favouring defensive playstyles where the focus is on keeping yourself alive with blocks, parries and dodge rolls, moreso than dealing damage, which comes from memorising enemy attack patterns and then finding an opening where you can strike. Bloodborne is much faster, encouraging you to strike as often as possible. Because it's so much faster, the gameplay feels a lot different. For some, that makes it easier, for others, it makes it harder. It depends what kind of gamer you are. Back to Souls, and 3 is like a midway between Souls 1 and Bloodborne, being the fastest of the Souls trilogy. Dark Souls 2 is unbearably slow, with bad game design and artificial difficulty greatly increasing how slow the combat is. Those aren't the entry's only flaws, and personally, I can't recommend Dark Souls 2. I do however recommend all of the others. Dark Souls, Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne are fantastic games and provide an unparallelled experience. The best part of all three is the world design, and the boss battles. If you're a fan of boss battles in gaming, you should know that this series has never been beaten in this area. FromSoftware are the undisputed kings of amazing boss battles. One last point - ignore anyone telling you which one is easiest or hardest - that depends entirely on which one you play first or last.

            • From a difficulty standpoint 3 is easiest Bloodborne can be easier for some and harder for others, it depends on how you adapt to the speed of the combat. I like the faster gameplay and found it easier, but the chalice dungeons provide s harder experience than anything else dark souls has provided The first is the hardest, but that’s mostly due to the dated gameplay and it was my first so I was learning it too, it’s easier to pick up the others once you understand one game But to enjoy them the most I would play them in order, and this is the order I personally recommend 1, 2, bloodborne, 3 (3 can be switched with Bloodborne) There’s a lot of reasons for this but it’s mainly due to story and the way the game will feel. Going from a well refined and graphically pleasing game like Bloodborne, to an outdated clunky Dark Souls 2, could ruin the experience for DS2 or something like that. The story also isn’t very cinematic, there are cutscenes and some narration, but the story is told thru world building, and if you don’t really experience that, you will be left clueless Personally I hate 2 and think you can skip it, some love it, some hate it. Without too much details it kinda lacks the flair the souls games had. If it was it’s own game, I think it would be good, but it’s not a good Souls game. If you are worried about fully investing into the series and just want to try 1 game and then go from there, I would try Dark Souls 3 or Bloodborne since they are the most modern versions of the game. But make sure you get the DLC for any of the games (if you enjoy them). Every dlc contains some of the coolest weapons and bosses in the series and always felt worth the money

            • Ignore anyone telling you to skip 2. Play it & form your own opinion—personally I think it’s the best. I would just play them in order. 1>2>3, don’t be ashamed to ask for help, and prepare to die. Especially once you get to the annoyingly tough Ringed City bosses. The games aren’t as hard as they’re made out to be, but they still aren’t a cakewalk.

              • Well... In all honesty you can skip Dark souls 2 so let's just get that out of the way Despite its level design Dark souls 1 is very.. (god people are gonna kill me for this) overrated. It's definitely not perfect. Dark souls 3 is probably the best way to enter the series, you don't really need to know the story of the first 2 games and it's the smoothest control wise

              • Start with Dark Souls 1, then 2 then 3. Dark Souls 3 is the best IMO, but it would feel a lot worse going from the most refined to the first. Things to know: In DS1 is that armor and poise matters a LOT. Do not attack any NPCs that are just sitting or standing. Do not bother with the resistance stat in Dark Souls 1. Every game uses some for of losing halted after you die. Dark Souls 1 and 3 just take a percentage off when not embered. Dark Souls 2 does it differently. When you die, you lose a tiny bit of HP, but as you keep dying and if you don't use a human effigy, you will eventually lose half of your maximum HP pool. Thankfully there is a ring to half that to where you lose 25%. Basically don't waste human effigies and only use one if you want to summon either an NPC or friend to help you or you just can't make any progress with that amount of health. This is a long post, but don't let the difficulty of the games scare you. They are all amazing games and you will find yourself getting a lot better after a while.
