Do liberals celebrate 4th of july?

https://news.gallup.com/poll/236420/record-low-extremely-proud-americans.aspx This shows that only 3/10 democrats are proud to be American. This seems to be a result of current politics. Repubicans even under Obama were still proud with about 7/10 being proud. So to any of the democrats or liberal minded people; how do you go about national holidays? I don't mean to be rude, I'm just curious.

  • I consider myself moderate, so I'm not exactly the target here, but I personally don't see the point in being proud of being something your born into. I was born in America, good for me. I'm proud of our accomplishments as Americans, but not because I'm American. To me, it makes as much sense as being proud to be a certain race religion, gender, etc. It's not an accomplishment to be born or raised into something. However, I still celebrate our national holidays, such as July 4th. July 4th celebrates an important accomplishment in American history, that being our declaration of freedom from the then considered tyrannical Britain. That is an important accomplishment and deserves celebration.

    • I would, but I’m on a trip. I am not proud to be American for many reasons, mainly because we have been awful people (nothing to do with current politics, we just are) I mean, let me list off the facts Pushing the native Americans off their land Doing the whole “manifest destiny” and essentially acting like imperialist jerks Letting the top 1% be in control for to long Allowing factories to have ridiculously low pay and a danger factor of 100009 Slavery Child labor The atomic bomb (specifically their use on densely populated areas in Japan) Burning cities to the ground with firebombs Using napalm Carpet bombing everything Spending more money on the military than nasa (this is more of my personal complaint, not a legitimate one) Spending way to much money on killing people And so on (please feel free to correct me on my history, I may have made some mistakes)

Do conservatives celebrate memorial day considering how many Americans they send to die in mostly needless wars? Do they celebrate veterans day considering how often then screw our troops and vets?

Well I'm not proud of to be American. My president is an ass hole, a racist, and a childish low class deplorable human being. Despite all that he's done the hardcore closeted racist and openly racists people in America still support him simply because he's a white republican. This man.... Excuse me... This boy, is a Joke of a president. Had Obama did anything trump did he would have been impeached in a heart beat. That's a fact not an opinion. In conclusion, I don't want to be American because to be American means I am a selfish individual who stands for injustice in my country. America hasn't been great country since forever. Maybe it will be great one day when people stop thinking we are so great and there's nothing to fix. Or when people stop pretending racism and inequality isn't a thing.
since someone will no doubt say something about the troops just know I 100% support the troops.
• I don’t know if I consider myself liberal anymore. I certainly don’t identify to the right. But I do recognize the way our country has made some steps forward; I think our constitution is second to none. But at the same time, our citizens are politically and scientifically illiterate, and it seems our current president exemplifies these attitudes. I celebrated today by spending time with family, as I do most holidays.

            • By the Offtopic's definition, I'm considered a liberal because I'm for the economic policy that the US shouldn't spend money or take out loans that we don't have the ability to pay back, and that we shouldn't treat other humans, immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, children, and others like shit. Even though these policies tend to be much more on the moderate and in the middle of the political spectrum, the Offtopic tends to be much more right-leaning, with me being confident about saying that there are a good chunk of members on this forum who are extremist right wingers, I'll still be called a liberal for apparently having empathy and being frugal. On to the subject at hand: There are things and events in the US that bring up a sense of pride in the US, but there are also things and events in the US that give the US an ugly stain. Rather than being proud of only the positive things and events that happened in the US, US citizens should also gain an understanding that the negative things have also shaped the US, and should learn from those mistakes rather than emulate and repeat them. Unfortunately, it seems that the US and many of its citizens are repeating the same mistakes that have happened in the past, rather than learning from it. A US citizen should be proud of all the work that previous generations have done to get them to where they're at today, but they shouldn't be overly prideful about it while systematically ignoring all the mistakes and blunders that have happened throughout US history.

Well if you’re proud when you see kids in cages good for you. That was under Obama and now trump. Pretty sad In my opinion. As far as being proud of America. Of course, compared to other countries we are undeniably the greatest. I am very proud of that.

                          • Hard to be proud of something I had no control over. Do not mistake me though. I love the US and the ideals laid out in the Constitution. I am grateful for the collective effort it took to establish and preserve this nation. I am proud of the fact that I served in the Army, and that I continue to serve by working with prosecutors and law enforcement to continue to preserve and protect this country and her citizens. Yes, we have a multitude of problems, but so did our Founding Fathers and ever generation afterwards. This does not mean our country is falling apart, rather it means that our country is still the land of opportunity. Opportunity exists to resolve those issues to continue the tradition of American greatness. Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Americans!

                          • I'm on the right side of the spectrum and can't say I've ever felt proud. To me, proud just isn't a fitting word. Grateful, yes. Proud, not really. To me, pride (in the positive sense) is something you feel in yourself or others when an achievement is made. Am I proud of those who died for America? Yes. Am I proud of what Americans have accomplished? Yes. But, I am not proud to simply be born into America. To me, the immigrants who work their butts off to get into this country legally and make a life for themselves have more of a right to be proud to be American than I do.

                              • Legally, if you answer in a Gallup poll that you are not "extremely proud" to be an American, you are not allowed to celebrate the 4th of July. Don't look at me, I don't make the rules.
