Learn to let go... (Advice for Solo Players)

EDIT: This is for SOLO players. Not for people that want to do team activities. So you don't want to team up with other guardians... that's ok. But do realize this is a game designed for multiplayer engagement. As someone who has decided to play this game solo after spending 4 years as a PvP and Raid addict, I have some pointers for you. 1. Who gives a shit about light level if you are not playing endgame content!?!? Seriously let it go. You do not need to be max light unless you plan on doing endgame content. 2. You don't need (insert gun/armor here). As a solo player learn to accept that you cannot get some items and that's ok. As someone who has been an OCD collector in this game (I currently have every weapon and 90% of the armor) it was very liberating to let go of collecting everything. The best part is that a gun's PvP ability no longer dictates its value to me. I now focus on guns that look and feel cool. Very liberating. 3. Not everyone has the time, skills, or patience for endgame or PvP content and that's ok. I have lots of friends that can play crucible all day (not necessarily well either) and never get frustrated. Some people realize it's just a game. Not me. I am super competitive at everything. Since walking away from PvP and Raids I have been a much happier guy (ask my wife). This is my problem. Lots of people love PvP and Raids. So this tip boils down to playing the modes that suit you and not asking the developer to change the game to suit your needs. Bottom line, it's okay to play Destiny solo. Learn to accept that some gear will not be obtainable. Most importantly, respect that others enjoy these modes and deserve some gear to chase.

  •
Bottom line, it's okay to play Destiny solo. Learn to accept that some gear will not be obtainable. Most importantly, respect that others enjoy these modes and deserve some gear to chase.
Everyone who plays this game deserves gear to chase. And there are a lot more "solo" players than competitive PvP people or people who raid. There always have been, and always will be. There is no reason for these things to be mutually exclusive. The problem is not what people do or do not want to do, the problem is that Bungie half assed the release of this game. Solo Activities Heroic Story Adventues Public Events Lost Sectors Infinite Forest Escalation Protocol Heroic Strikes Nightfall Monthly Events(Rallies, Banner) Seasonal Events PvP Quickplay and Weekly Group Activities Competitive Playlist Trials The Raid and Raid Lairs This is a MULTIPLAYER game. Not a co-op game. The raid and trials are for the hardcore gamer, but they do not represent D2 as a game. Every activity above had the potential for loot specific to that activity. EVERY one of them. Bungie decided that a better idea was to grant tokens for each and let us buy gear. Rendering what activity we chose to do meaningless. In D1, we could grind any of those types of things for specific gear OR for actual reputation to get specific gear. So the problem is not solo players wanting something for "free". The problem is the fact that Bungie pulled a fast one on people by removing the best features of D1 because they weren't actually done with D2.

    • Sorry. You're basically giving Bungie a pass on what is poor game design. Level cap for all. Gear for some. Cosmetics for the few. Locking vertical progression behind activities with MAJOR participation barriers is just shitty game design, and the fact that Bungie is having to resort to it now is a mark of how badly they have broken the game's horizontal progression. Vertical progression----Level and Power progression. Horizontal progression----Build variety and "gear" perks. Sorry, but the fact that Bungie keeps doing this is showing that they don't know what they're doing....and how badly they broke the franchise with the changes they made to Destiny 2.

        • Honestly, I would play the raid, but I already have a full-time job...

        • This is very good advice. As a solo player, I agree with what you've said. I'd only like to raise my light to be able to pitch in for EP and try to keep up with my clan. Otherwise light level doesn't affect me much at all. I would like a different path to boost my light beyond a slavish devotion to Milestones, though. Same sh*t every week. We had more paths and Bungie removed them or neutered them because they were abused by people who no lifed the game and then complained that it was too easy to hit max light. What it actually created was the biggest class struggle Destiny has seen yet: those who play with clans/others and those who play solo. It's to the point where "solo player" means "second class" and is treated like garbage, Destiny's version of the caste system. You see it rear it's ugly head most often when players like me ask for one of those paths to be returned to the game. Chorus calls of: "It's a team based game, scrub! Start talking to people!" "You don't NEED high light level anyway since you don't raid!" "You just want everything handed to you!" "I'm glad they're not catering to solos anymore! Cause that means I get to earn my special snowflake gear with no risk of them getting it too!" It sucks. It's making Destiny a progressively uglier experience. And it's making it easier for those of us being turfed out to leave the game.

            • Didn't read all of it, but people need to ascribe themselves to not getting every item a game has to offer. If you don't play X game mode, you're simply not going to get Y gear. Simple as that. As for light levels, I think Y1 did it best with needing Raids/Trials for max light, with IB filling in the gaps for solo players. So long as solo players have access to enough light to do solo or match made activities, they really can't ask for much more.

            • I think this is fine, but they need to CLEARLY define what is and is not multiplayer/team required content. Legend of Acrius is a raid only weapon. You can not get it as a solo player to the best of my knowledge. Raid weapons and armor are exclusive to that activity, and should not be available from any other source beyond the raid and raid lairs. There are no PvP specific exotics. So IMO, the catalysts for these exotics should not be random drops from playing Crucible, anymore than catalysts for non raid gear should be RNG drops for doing the raid. HOWEVER... Making the completion requirements for these items, send people into PvP and the Raid. That is actually very good game design as it gives people real incentive to do the activity and use the gear in question. But making people grind PvP or the raid just to get a drop that unlocks part of a weapon they got just by playing the normal game? Nope. That is a shitty decision, with the sole purpose of adding a false grind to activities that are lacking their own meaningful content. Make new raid exotics, make PvP specific exotics, THEN tie any upgrades into those activities. Don't poach world items because there aren't any new items available to make PvP or Raid specific.

              • I agree with 99% of this. More people need to understand this. The only thing I would change is instead of saying it's a "game built for multiplayer" (which makes it sound like BF or COD where individuals play with a mix of other random people). The better way to put it is that it's "A game designed around building small communities of players that complete activities together"

                • I was never a multiplayer gamer until I played Destiny 1 beta. It chamged my outlook completely. I don't mean I started looking for a permanent community (although I ended up managing a maxed out Clan with a couple of terrific fellow admins (you know who you are) and now Founder of a small group)... I mean that Destiny activities such as Public Events, Faction Rally, Escalation Protocol are NOT solo activities. You pitch in with other Guardians completely at random and get stuff done. You almost never play Destiny solo after campaign completion. Even if it's just someone passing by and reviving you, Destiny is a co-op game. Get a headset and lean into it. As an otherwise lifelong solo gamer, I assure you that you won't regret it.

                  • I don't care what I have to do to get what enjoyment I want. I just want there to be more than one optimal way to do pinical activities like escalation protocol, and the nightfalls. And if I haven't stressed it enough, I don't mind having to play with others to do those activities.

Most importantly, respect that others enjoy these modes and deserve some gear to chase.
I think this is the most important takeaway from your post. As a solo myself, I don't understand why this is such a hard concept for others to grasp. I can't be bothered to do the raids, trials, or nightfall, in what sane world should I expect to receive those rewards? One thing I will slightly disagree with is the difficulty of reaching max power. That, to me, is my end game. I may not need it, but it's what I chase. I'm not against the changes to progression completely, but it would be nice if they made those exotic drops worth while again. It would still take some time to hit max, but it would ease the pain ever so slightly. They probably won't, and I'm fine with that. It's just a thought.

I'm a solo and fine with it. One problem I do have though is putting a catalyst for a weapon in a part of the game I don't play. But that said weapon was something I was able to get solo.

                      • I've never really had a problem with gear being locked behind certain parts of the game unless it's illogical (such as the Sleeper's upcoming catalyst).

                      • Wait, why does everyone need to care about what you care about to be happy? Why is it so offensive to you that solo players post their feedback in the feedback forum? Since you think that limiting your experiences makes you happier maybe you should also stop going onto the forums.
