Former bungie employee talks about how bungie is run and the problems

Basically explains why the game went to shit. They can't take criticism and want everyone to kiss their ass basically.

    • Yeah, hopefully they fire the lead devs, because obviously they -blam!-ing suck at their jobs. Bungo hires the worst people it seems. Time to take your heads out of your ass.

      • tbh I feel like I could have wrote half of that and I never worked for Bungie. I already knew they: don't stay late to try and improve/meet deadlines are super secretive spend way too much time in meetings

"Former employee" would make me very suspicious of the individuals motives. Either way, what he described, is the same at every large corporate company. Not sure there's anything revelatory here.

Stop and ask yourself: Why is this guy airing (what he wants you to believe) is Bungie's dirty laundry in this fashion? Publicly and anonymously? I guarantee you that the answer ISN'T that he cares so much for the game or the gamer. Whistleblowers come in two flavors. Those who are motivated by conscience to do what is right when confronted by an organization doing something clearly wrong or clearly illegal. That is not the case here.. Anyone who has worked in a large corporate structure can tell you that the things he's going on about happen in every large organization. Especially one that has grown very rapidly and has been forced to become more formal. The other kind of whistleblower is the one motivated by revenge. He or she feels that they've been wronged, and this is their way of getting even. Everything in his post points to being the latter kind. He never talks about the work being done. He's entirely focused on issues of corporate culture and his resentment towards it. And his focus on HR is particularly troubling. HR is usually the department that handles---and punishes--conflicts between employees. Especially those involving inappropriate behavior. Bungie is a company that doubled in size and underwent a major management shakeup in the time this guy claims to have worked there. That always means a major culture change, and usually one that becomes more formal. ...and this guy sound like he's been unable or unwilling to adapt, and he's getting into trouble because of it. So this is his attempt to get even with the company. Grain of salt.

Assumimg this article is legit, sure does explain a lot. I play pool for a living. And part of that is i teach it to ppl who want to learn. The students that always end up good players are the ones that listen and know they have something to learn. The ppl that never really get any better, its not because the potential isnt there, its because they think they already know it all.

            • Yeah, even assuming this is a genuine employee review there are some red flags when he calls out HR, the "snowflakes," and complains about not being able to say certain things in a work environment anymore. Sounds like he may have had some sort of reprimanding for his behavior and then took to the internet to vent his grievances. Other than that, sounds like any other company environment. Gonna be honest, expected the usual forums toxins to jump all over this, pleasantly suprised to find many people calmly saying to take it with a grain of salt.

              • It actually says he is a current employee right at the top of his review. So at the time of his writing he was working there, that's probably important to note.

              • I can resonate with some of these comments, as my company suffers from some of the same issues. The problem is, most software companies do as well. I can see how some specific comments filter over into the game development, like the fact that they are just now getting onto an Agile methodology cycle. Which explains the headlong rush to release, and then the difficulty executing. Bottom line, I'm not too sure that what I'm seeing said in the review is all that different from most of the code factories I've worked at. It's rare to find one where everything works well together as a harmonious machine. There are a few red-list bullet points to take from that list, but it generally seems pretty par for the industry.

              • This actually says alot about the Game itself. Bunch of Self Righteous Snowflake Pansies trying to create a "Competitive Shooter" in a work environment where you will get shunned if you say anything Negative / Constructive. Pretty much sums up D2! No respect for this company at all.

It was interesting how he said so many "meetings." The link about to turth behind Destiny before it was released in 2014 mentions how they would just sit around a lot. This link confirms that and explains most likely why D2 was a lazy pushed out product among other things... https://kotaku.com/the-messy-true-story-behind-the-making-of-destiny-1737556731

Title's of some of the reviews - "Bungie Great for Some Employees, Not So Much for Others" "Shell of former glory" "Nightmare managers and terrible working conditions" "Challenging, Amazing people, but terrible work conditions." "Way too much crunch" But for each of those, there's a positive title...

Welcome to most of the corporate world. I've been a software developer at multiple companies the last couple of decades (not game development) and have seen everything described in that review. I've had issues with HR at companies not being responsive as well. IT departments are usually worse than HR. We use Agile currently and there's no shortage of meetings. Most of my day today is meetings which is why I'm posting on here waiting for one to start ha. Note this screen shot is from Glass Door an anonymous workplace review site. https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Bungie-Reviews-E284423.htm

Interesting read, but I have to wonder why he is a former employee there ? Those pros sound fairly decent in comparison to the standard in the field. by their own admission. and the cons sound like any corporate company to me. Shrugs. I don't want to sound like a jerk; but how they treat their employees id their business. How they treat their customers (us) and their method of dumbing down their game is another matter which concerns me far far more.
