Honest conversation about trials.

Trials is completely broken in its current state. It needs to have divisions and a ranked system. I don't mind sweaty matches against evenly matched teams. What I do mind is getting pub stomped, or pub stomping others. Neither one makes me a better player and allows me to "git gud". I will continue to play it as it is for now and hope for some sort of ranked play it the future. I know there will be the argument that it's for the elite and only the best of the best. I understand that and see your point. My thought is why don't the best play the best and the worst play the worst. A ranked/division style of trials would make more sense and promote a healthier competitive style of game play over the current system. As it stands now, there seems to be 4 types of groups in trials. Group A can't get a win to save their lives. Group B can string together a few wins, but getting 5-7 is just out of their reach. Group C can get 7 wins and occasionally flawless. Group D thinks going flawless is easy and they can't understand why other people complain. With ranked play you would have a better chance of moving from one group to the other. As it stands now if you are in group A or B its a complete struggle to try to move to the next group because nobody wants to play with you . Make different sets of "reward gear" for each division. Give people a reason to come back and try to get better. The elite top 500 will have different trials gear than everyone else, and each bracket under them will have different gear. The elite can still be elite, and the rest of us unworthy peasants can sweat it out trying to move up to the next division. When playing with a mix of division levels in a party you would match off of the highest person in the team to help make it fair. I know none of this will happen, but I can hope for it. I fear if it stays like it is, trials will die and only the hard core will step in there, making it a terrible mess for anyone but the elite and locking up the only truly competitive endgame PVP from the masses. I know my opinion is highly unpopular when it comes to the truly hard core PVP beasts out there. You people are amazing and the best in the game. Let us non-Beasts play each other and try to "get gud" while you play each other. Maybe one day we will get on your level. This is my 2 cents. I'm prepared to be shredded now. Have a nice day. TL:DR Trials needs Ranked play with a tiered system where people play against similar skill level opponents instead of a grab bag of mixed matches and RNG to go flawless. TL::DR2 Dont be lazy and read the full post lol Edit 1: It completely surprises me the number of people who don't read the post and still make comments. To everyone that read the post it's obvious if you don't read it and leave a snide comment. Edit 2: I went flawless 2 times this weekend, I have 60-70 wins in trials. I'm not the best player but with a solid team I do win. My stats are ok, but I play with randoms most of the time. If I played with a solid team I'm sure they would be better. I still think trials should have a division system.

  • I cannot agree with this tier system because Bungie's main issue for your Group A is pure lag. Played 10 matches yesterday with clan members. With exception of one match, the other 9 we all die in 2 mida hits; we hit them with 5 hits and they still have half shields. It's not my internet connection as I'm on fiber 1 mile from my ISP and COD/Titanfall 2 does not have these lag issues against others in North America. Clan mates all had the same issue. I don't think all those teams were ddosing etc. I think part of it is that my clan members are from around the country not just 4 friends in the same city with the same ISP. It wasn't uncommon for us to only have a collective of 5 kills after 6 rounds... Even when playing by myself in Quick play or Competitive, half the matches are laggy. I die behind a wall, even where my ghost is waiting for respawn. Or for 3 of us to die from a frontal confrontation against 1 enemy. I almost wish they just didn't even have the game mode, but not an issue for everyone, so enjoyable for some. I can only think that the amount of time devs spend on pvp would of been better on more story/content since their whole fix in D2 versus D1 was to remove the visible lag bars lol *sigh*.

    • I'd have to say I completely agree. There needs to be some sort of system that allows the Elite gamers to play eachother. If you've received a 7 win card, you shouldn't play others who are struggling to get a 7 win card. Destiny wants you to play trials. I love the crucible, both competitive and casual but I despise trials. I don't consider myself a scrub when it comes to PvP but I know I'm not the greatest either. Usually finishing top of the team in Crucible yet trials I'll be lucky to scrape by with 5 kills total. My teammates are hit and miss in Curicble but trials we get absolutely slaughtered. Being two shot with a MIDA around a corner is the most frustrating thing in this game. With most of my teammates being casual players in it for fun, they have zero interest in playing trials anymore because of this. Who can blame them? Nobody wants to spend an hour getting wrecked, you don't get better you get angry. There's no lag issues in normal crucible so why is there in trials? I get it, trials is meant to be competitive and inspire teams to work together more. A system that rewards good teams makes more sense than 'get a win' now 'get 7 wins'

    • You think this community is toxic now and you can't get people to play with you? Add this "division" thing you mentioned and watch the elitism overflow. Idk what the fix is for trials. i mean right now its the best its ever been in my opinion. All you need is to win a few games and you get to go to the "lighthouse" and use rep coins for gear. I've been flawless 1 time and I have almost all of the weapons. I only have 1 piece of armor but I can care less about the armor. I am really average at pvp but managed to string together 7 wins after playing for 5 hours straight. I'm not recommending or saying this is how it should be but I am saying it takes practice and team chemistry and a little bit of luck sometimes but if you just keep playing it will happen. It you start separating people into divisions though, every post will be "must be division D with 2.0kd". And eventually you will hit a wall where you will not be able to compete leaving you in the same predicament. I think Bungie has done the best they can with the Trials game mode. Maybe they can tweak matchmaking a bit so its a bit more skill based but I can tell they thought long and hard about this and I think its a decent compromise.

        • Or you could just have an actual ranked playlist and bring back card based wins for trials where you play vs people with the same wins

          • I agree in full, maybe divide the matchmaking further like based on amount of times flawless, then by K/D ratio, then by current card, then by connection and keeping that last set so laggy S.O.Bs play like and good connection saints play other saints. I don't know specifics of how that would work but then again this is a concept.

          • Revert to full random back in D1 Y1. Would be a lot easier for people to go flawless, and the lag wouldn't be an issue (cause CBMM).

          • It doesn't matter if you lose to a good team, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. The good players put a lot more time into PvP than I do so I can't have any complains when I lose to them. I started off terrible. I didn't touch PvP in D2 until the first trials weekend and I don't expect to win every game. Some players play less than I do and expect to get the top tier rewards for nothing. Everyone gets the same matchmaking and if players can't win their games that's their problem not bungies.

              • How about a Trials mode where everyone gets put into a blind draw and teammates are chosen randomly? That would put an end to carries and split the super sweaty teams up. You could have four divisions or grades and each team would get one player from group A,B,C, and D. Basically matches would at least be somewhat fair.

                • I agree, Ranked play needs to be implemented. All these people as hunters with Mida's and the Helmet are too much for casual players. Screw the people who think we should go to quickplay because it's supposed to be for EVERYONE.

                  • Nah I agree completely. Don't get how people are confused. Bottom tier will not = top in rewards it might even just unlock higher tiers. It would let people actually learn, you don't learn anything when you're being shredded, same goes for when you can barely find a guy to kill. And the best part, it would stop people from stumbling through by being paired with bumbs (I mean we all know runs vary heavy). I just don't see how it harms anyone besides the people who are preeetty good but not quite gonna win top tier.

                    • I played 4 games (terrible at PVP and I'm okay with that) and got stomped all but one of them. The interesting thing was that out of the 4 games we played, we only played 2 teams total. We played each team twice. How the heck does that happen?

Sadly you only think about yourself when you talk about this and not others. And I'm sorry you aren't good enough to compete for Flaweless but. No. Why should I be put in a higher bracket but when I play with some of my good friends who aren't that good at pvp they get crushed and its 1v4. How is that fair? Explain, cause you sound like touring just crying for a cheese. Should always be random, unless made Prestige.. Which you'd cry even harder!

                    • Yea, I would like a rank system but only if you could only get weapons and armor if you were very high on the rank system. It would be super shitty if a player at rank bronze can go flawless and get the same rewards while Im in rank master and sweat even more

                    • It's honestly a whole lot easier to go flawless in D2 than it is to go flawless in D1. In D1 you went up against people with the same amount of wins as you, which meant that they have a higher chance of being better than you. In D2 you get whoever you get, which has its pros and cons like you mentioned. Pros: -Easier to go flawless -you might not run into a sweaty team - A large percentage of D2 players are casuals Cons: -There is a chance to run into people who are far better than you. Pros outweigh the cons. Bungie literally made the game way easier for the masses so saying that the system is bad is wrong. They did what they intended to do so complaining about things is going to solve anything. Play the game and in time you will develop as a player to where one day you can say trials is "easy".

Nah, I agree, trials needs work and I've always said simply that any group with a flawless trials guardian should only ever be matched against another group with the same. Either that or go flawless and get locked out and let others have a chance. *Shrug* And yes, I'm complete sh*t at pvp and never had a single aspiration at flawless. The only time I found trials fun was during that halloween when people were whining about it having no radar (bring that back) and no revives I think. Trials being "best of the best" shouldn't have baby monitors in the upper left of the screen.

                      • Calling it before it happens. They will introduce a guided game option for trials soon, this would get rid of paid flawless runs, give incentives for clans to help other players. I do wish for a true rank system but I'm sure the wait times for matches would take much longer than it is. It also would be hard to be fair because if there is a team of 4 and one player has a 2.0 kd and the rest have like a 1.0 kd, of the team gets put against a whole team of 2.0s they would still get worked. I dont know if theres a system that would make everyone happy
