So I'm a bit of a gun nut IRL. US Army, spent a whole lot of time tinkering and toying with many a firearm and learning how they work on a mechanical level.
This game annoys me with most of its weapon designs. And it pisses me off because Bungie is usually really good about designing their weapons so that they logically work in some reality. Take almost any UNSC weapon from the Halo Games pre-343 for an example; they operate on real world logic and mechanics.
Like the UNSC MA5B Assault Rifle was basically an oversized FN F2000 that swallowed an AK-47 and had some fancy tech and a huge magazine strapped to it. Just looking at the thing, a skilled gunsmith could absolutely build a real-life, completely functional version of the weapon if they wanted to.
Destiny's weaponry for the most part looks like it was designed by a middle schooler that has no idea how guns work other than they have magazines loaded with bullets and go "bangity-bangity".
For example; hand cannons. According to a booklet that came with the collectors edition, they fire a 40mm to 40.8mm polymer round. I spent more time on Google than I'd like to admit trying to figure out what in the hell that is. All you see a bolt of kinetic energy that exits the barrel (which on some models isn't even lined up with the cylinder -- like wtf, guys?) And one big cartridge with a single primer exit the cylinder upon reloading.
One primer, but the things fires up to 13 rounds. I'd be willing to accept "space magic" as an explanation if it was in the actual game, but it's not. Oh, and most of the time the cylinder rotates for no reason, because there's only one primer for the firing pin to hit.
Oh, and how in the hell does Thorn fire a railroad spike from a cartridge the size of a D battery? No, seriously. Go shoot that thing at a wall and see what sticks out of it. It's weird.
Then you have Scout Rifles, which look like they were designed so that the magazine looks like a battery that belongs to your dad's old power drill that's slapped into the bottom of the hand grip, miles away from where the firing mechanisms would be. How the hell do the bullets get from there to the bolt carrier if there's no possible way for them to get there based on some of these designs?
And let me rant real quick about Omalon guns; what do they fire? Ferrofluid? Space juice? Halo fans' tears? I really wanna know!
I would seriously wish Bungie addressed some of this in the lore in a much more detailed manner.

You know? I've often wondered about the technology that goes into Destiny's weaponry myself... Especially those HC barrels that don't line up with the cylinder, 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Oh well😁 must be SPACE MAGIC! 🙃🙃👽

3 RespuestasThis may sound like a lazy explanation for the guns themselves but all the ammo is actually glimmer. Fabricated by your ghost to fit the weapon you're using. Kinda sounds like another form if space magic but it is lore based in destiny's universe.

7 RespuestasOk so I can answer all of this so quickly your head is gonna spin are you ready? IT'S SCIENCE FICTION GET THE -blam!- OVER YOURSELF! It's not real life. None of your comparisons matter nothing you are bitching about matters none it. It's a game set in the future something none of us have any actual knownledge of so how the -blam!- can anything about the weapons bother you? For all you know we could have guns that do everything in this game but you don't know and neither do I but I'm not sitting here bitching about real life to fantasy land. Are you going to play final fantasy next and complain that some of the swords can harness the power of water or fire? No? Why because you used your brain and realised "holy shit it's a game and the creatures can make whatever the -blam!- they want because it's their game and not mine". But I'm sure tons of people are going to bitch at me saying "well if they didn't want any of this they shouldn't of put it into a book or whatever" hey guess What? People write sci-fi books all the -blam!-ing times and anyone with a brain doesn't stop and go "ummm how can they get shot with a laser beam wearing no actual armor just cloth and not die that's not realistic". Do you know in this weird sci-fi world their cloth isn't laser proof? No? Then stfu and either play the game, read the book or don't do them and bitch about "realism" in something that is sci-fi that's most idiotic thing any person can do and that's why we still have people saying violence in video games creates murders because people like you want to compare them to real life and you shouldn't because if you can't see the differences in them then you are either a naive kid or a very stupid adult.

6 RespuestasWhile I respect your frustration I think you're overthinking this.
-
I always figured that the cartridge we load into a hand cannon was the raw material from which the gun 3D printed a bullet.
-
My 13 yo son and I have both spent a lot of time making fun of that as well. About the only thing we've come up with is the transmute tech that pervades the game. But then, you're also running around with an oversized FAL, a Mossberg 500, and a Ma-Deuce strapped to your back along with hundreds of rounds to feee them. Then there's the fire two shots and reload thing. If they wanted to be realistic you'd lose the ammo when you drop the mag, not just "top off". And don't even get me started on the weapon perks and the missing connection with reality. I've said before the writers really need to spend some range time. There's a reason I main a Warlock. tl/dr version: Space magic works for me.
-
Ummmm... It's imaginary? Except for the part where I toss a purple ball of nuke at people. That part is real.

The point of this topic being brought up again is what exactly? This is year three, get over it?

Editado por WiggletonBandit: 4/4/2017 3:58:55 PMI play a reanimated immortal space robot with the ability to shoot explosive balls of grape kool-aid from my hands, lightning bolts from my fingertips, and explode into a fiery rage while fighting time traveling robots, space wizards, tubby space turles, and whatever the hell the fallen are. I think I can go ahead and suspend disbelief on the whole how do these guns work thing.

3 RespuestasEditado por Technohydra: 4/4/2017 3:57:15 PMOn hand cannons, the thing being loaded isn't a round, it's a power load; essentially, the entire mechanism of the internal portion of the cylinder is contained inside of it. The external cylinder wall is just a guide and guard, responsible for aligning, rotating, and protecting the mechanical portion. So inside of the power load, there is a set of wells, and a bullet in each. How the hell the firing pin is supposed to contact the primer is beyond me; maybe it's a caseless-type round that is chemically or electronically triggered? Keep in mind we have a ghost that can alter the electrical and mechanical functions of objects, so that may be part of the intent. Thorn is a little different, it uses hive ritual and universe logic to generate it's projectiles (the story of how Thorn was made is actually really interesting). In short, a gun called Rose was taken into the pits on the moon, and used to fight the Hive while studying their magic and reality structure. The holder then essentially defied all convention by applying the Hive rituals and pieces of Hive bodies and various bones to Rose to augment it and make it function according to the Hive logic and reality structure, rather than our own. It changed the weapon so much it is referred to as a Weapon of Sorrow. Similar to how the Hive crumble when they are physically killed, the weapon does the reverse; it expends a Hive energy charge, which manifests itself as a piece of corrupted carapace when it exits the gun (and it's theoretical personal 'throne world'). This perversion of both the Guardian conduct and the Hive life cycle earns it the title of Weapon of Sorrow quite well (along with its tendency to devour the Light from targets it impales). Omolon guns...the theory on them is that they are firing a highly pressurized jet of a specific fluid, similar to a water-cutter jet, but at a longer range and higher velocity. the physics of this is a bit iffy, as the jet would rapidly lose both force and velocity once it exited the compression vessel; it's possible there is some property of the fluid that is supposed to solidify upon contact with the air and form a proto-slug, but I think the physic of something like that is beyond weak, for realities sake. Something similar to an ionized fluid that follow a primer beam? The world may never know, I just assume it fires Listerine charges and kills things by freshening their breath. Either way, the Vanity is still a PvP favorite. With scouts...yeah, I wondered about that one myself. Unless it's a vaccum-fed system, which has it's own set of complications, the mag placement is a complete mystery for me. I can't even begin to think of the mechanism that would be required to get one of those rounds to battery, and I have a degree in mechanical engineering, for -blam!-s sake. Like the guns, baffled by the mechanical logic I'm being asked to assume.
-
Editado por The Jag: 4/4/2017 4:36:33 PMI don't see where there is an issue with hand cannons. I myself have wondered about scout rifles. The mag is nowhere close to where the firing mechs would be. Behind the second hole towards however, the back of the gun where your guardians thumb would rest there is a considerably sized area. I would like to assume that this area is mabye 3 or 4 inches in length. The back of the scout rifle mag lines of with the back of that area. I can only assume that the bullets in that mag are fed up to the mechanism through the back of the magazine and then finally through that area at the back of the gun. Wow that sounds confusing. I have the Treads Upon Stars equipped right now. It is a scout rifle that shows that image I just tried to create pretty well. Looking at it and comparing to the info I just spouted of may give you a better picture. Again this is the only idea I can come up with. If you disagree then that is completely okay.

5 RespuestasShotguns: how do they not even tickle you at a range greater than 15 feet? Snipers: why is ammo capacity so limited? Swords: they require ammo? Sidearms: why isn't full auto a perk you can have? Hand cannons: effective range of how much again? Compared to any real life equivalent? Come on bungie, I shouldn't even have to think about loading my guns with viagra because clearly they are experiencing some performance issues.
-
Just pick one and carry on. Explanation A: They all contain electronics and materials that allow your ghost to interface with it to build and transmat the projectile to the barrel. With many of the firearms your actually just loading materials when you reload. Explanation B: It works because reasons.

4 RespuestasThis was brought up in a post a couple years ago but not like I'll care to remember the details, but a lot of destiny guns were based off this it seems
-
1 RespuestaWell this is in the future 😉
-
I totally agree with the op! I understand many real world rifles feature a bull-pup design, like the SA80, but there isn't any room on many of Destiny's rifles to transfer the rounds from the magazine to the firing chamber! Don't get me started on the location of the barrels in hand cannons! Then there is the supposed location of the rounds being fired from the cylinder; top or bottom? The hammer can only make contact where it rests and if it is firing the round were it makes contact, then it is firing a bullet through everything but the barrel... I've had this gripe as well and decided that for all intents and purposes the guns simply fire "imaginary rounds" to begin with! So whenever we actually hit something with them, we should feel happy that something actually happened! #Everybulletisamiracle

You know, when you reply to something like this with "It's just a video game" or "space magic", you're the one who looks like moron and asshole.
-
That's why I prefer the look of Hakke weapons, non of that fancy stuff just hard hitting weapons that are tactical, reliable and get the job done.
-
Also how when you reload with a round still in the chamber on a lot of guns they still pull the bolt or slide back which would effectively kick the hot round out wasting a bullet.
-
I'm with you. There was no thought in designing the weapons. Another annoyance I have is the sights on a lot of weapons. They are try to look cool but hinder vision on a massive level. It sounds like you know your weapons. I have a gun safe full of them and they all fire better than any destiny weapon
-
You do know this is a game in which guardians have crazy super powers, and are all fighting aliens and monsters? Why would you expect this to be much more realistic? It's like the whole quick scope thing, "quick scoping can't be done in real life so why can it be done here?" It's a game in which we, the guardians, can fly, throw purple magic, throw hammers on fire, teleport, and other things that aren't from the real world.
-
Agreed, it is highly annoying. I just don't admire the models and shoot the piss out of what ever gun I'm destroying shit with. The Scout rifles have given me the most annoyance over the years though.
-
Shut up
-
There is one big handcannon cylinder with no holes for the hammer to hit the bullet. Apparently you can fit 16 rounds into a 5 in mag. Apparently when you shoot a sniper there in a red light. Apparently semi auto rifles have a cylinder mag
-
It's a game, space magic ftw. That's the whole point.
-
Its a game dude of course some shit wont make sense, I mean think about it we are some tough as mother -blam!-ers who fight aliens who are the "darkness" and we use our "light" to kill them, like that fact alone doesnt make any -blam!-ing sense but nobody complains about that
