Guns: How in the %#$@ Do They Work?!

So I'm a bit of a gun nut IRL. US Army, spent a whole lot of time tinkering and toying with many a firearm and learning how they work on a mechanical level. This game annoys me with most of its weapon designs. And it pisses me off because Bungie is usually really good about designing their weapons so that they logically work in some reality. Take almost any UNSC weapon from the Halo Games pre-343 for an example; they operate on real world logic and mechanics. Like the UNSC MA5B Assault Rifle was basically an oversized FN F2000 that swallowed an AK-47 and had some fancy tech and a huge magazine strapped to it. Just looking at the thing, a skilled gunsmith could absolutely build a real-life, completely functional version of the weapon if they wanted to. Destiny's weaponry for the most part looks like it was designed by a middle schooler that has no idea how guns work other than they have magazines loaded with bullets and go "bangity-bangity". For example; hand cannons. According to a booklet that came with the collectors edition, they fire a 40mm to 40.8mm polymer round. I spent more time on Google than I'd like to admit trying to figure out what in the hell that is. All you see a bolt of kinetic energy that exits the barrel (which on some models isn't even lined up with the cylinder -- like wtf, guys?) And one big cartridge with a single primer exit the cylinder upon reloading. One primer, but the things fires up to 13 rounds. I'd be willing to accept "space magic" as an explanation if it was in the actual game, but it's not. Oh, and most of the time the cylinder rotates for no reason, because there's only one primer for the firing pin to hit. Oh, and how in the hell does Thorn fire a railroad spike from a cartridge the size of a D battery? No, seriously. Go shoot that thing at a wall and see what sticks out of it. It's weird. Then you have Scout Rifles, which look like they were designed so that the magazine looks like a battery that belongs to your dad's old power drill that's slapped into the bottom of the hand grip, miles away from where the firing mechanisms would be. How the hell do the bullets get from there to the bolt carrier if there's no possible way for them to get there based on some of these designs? And let me rant real quick about Omalon guns; what do they fire? Ferrofluid? Space juice? Halo fans' tears? I really wanna know! I would seriously wish Bungie addressed some of this in the lore in a much more detailed manner.

  • I'm sort of enjoying how about 60% of you completely lost the point of the post in general. So let me clarify my position by answering some questions: "Is this over thinking it?" - Yes, but that's part of the fun in the discussion. "Are you aware this isn't CoD? Or even real?" - Yes, but that doesn't mean I can't bitch about the lack of in-universe logic in the design of a fake gun. "Hurr durr but you won't say anything about the fact your character is an undead space wizard that shits nova bombs on a whim you must be retarded hurr durr." - Said space wizards have an in-universe explanation as to why and how they deficate void based -blam!--you bombs and piss lightning. The guns, at least the way their design works on a mechanical level -- because guns are machines that throw explosive-fueled freedom and -blam!--you -- do not. "Why does it matter?" - It doesn't. Matter of fact it's completely pointless, but we play videogames for fun when the reality is videogames will get us nowhere in life and no matter how much time we put into them, we are all going to die anyway. So let's have some fun and talk about stupid stuff. "Why mention you're Army? You doing it for attention, you -blam!-ing POG?" - To try and cement the fact that for the most part I'm knowledgeable on how firearms work. Not an expert, but I at least know my shit. I wasn't intending on baiting for thanks for my service or even bragging about the fact that I'm serving in the first place. I don't expect thanks for my service and quite frankly I don't want any. Not to sound like asshole, but it's not the point of the discussion. We cool now?

    • It's a shame. Instead of people actually engaging in the conversation, you're dealt with in the form of ridicule. You know, they could just make jokes about things in the game that don't make sense along with you. I mean, they're in the Fk'n Lore section for crying out loud, this is the place for deep thought. They should take their simple minds back over to Feedback to belittle others of their kind. I'm not a Bungie Scientist, so I'm not going to be of much assistance when it comes to the explanation of the Bungie Laws of Physics, but I had a fun time reading your post, man. You got a laugh out of me.

        • Good points, but 1. It's a science fantasy game 2. The guns probably use glimmer to transmute bullets or something like that 3. Thorn is basically an Eldritch Abomination in Hand Cannon form

A thrown knife does more damage than a hand cannon bullet. Idk why you're hung up on this.

          • Hand cannons do not put in one single octagonal prism. It's got holes in it that hold each bullet. I'm not sure how logically sound THAT is, since I have no experience. But, I do know that you are essentially taking out a whole chamber and putting in a new one, instead of just replacing the bullets in it

              • 1) It's a video game. 2) If you've read any of the grimoire on the various weapons, you'd know that the "ammo" is basically just transmutable material that your weapon (or ghost, in not sure which) fashions into each shot. Basically each magazine/clip/cartridge is just full of that material, not individual bullets. When you pull the trigger, the gun shapes the material into whatever type of shot your weapon uses and fires. In the case of hand cannons' wheels turning, what kind of satisfaction would you get out of a revolver that doesn't revolve? Also if you look closely at the cylinders, there are little dots on the corners (at least on Ace of Spades) where the hammer connects that could be considered multi-use primers. 3) It's a video game.

Yeah just like in Halo what's the point of having the gunner on the hog completely exposed on the back, or the falcon doing the same for everyone you are carrying? It's for fun in a game for people to play. It's always weird when someone gets super into the function of stuff for a game that is clearly fictional and only developing things as far as necessary. • I've already mentioned the in-game lore in an earlier post, but thinking about it, I think I have the *real world* answer. The developers used the same consultants as Shannon Watts and the Brady Campaign use. My guess would be the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Hopkins. They seem to have about the same connection with reality regarding guns as the Destiny developers. :-)

                  • I haven't read all of this yet, but already feel your aggravation after sentence 2. It's funny how they based pulse rifles entirely off of a bullpup, yet bullpups are rarely burst fire weapons. I'll keep reading lol
