Opinions on Sidearm usage. Please share!

Edit: I could NOT BE ANY HAPPIER WITH THIS POST. We've been top 5 trending for several hours. Lots of opinions and conversations flowing. Salt has been kept at a wonderfully low level. I love when the community can come together and really talk things out. This is what destiny needs, and I'm so thankful and proud of every one here for being so passionate about the game we all love! GGs everyone. [WARNING: OPINIONATED WALL OF TEXT INBOUND, Please feel free to skip and share opinions as you like] So, lets talk about the sidearm, and it's overbearing presence in the crucible. First off I'd like to state the obvious fact that sidearms are NOT OP and were quite rare before the update, aside from nlb users, and our dear friends TrueVanguard and Kjhovey. Their TTK's range from a minimum of .6 to a maximum of .96 dependant on archetype and headshots landed. As impressive as that sounds their range holds them in a balanced position as powerful short ranged duelers, meant for back up and shotgun countering purposes, and work exactly as they should. Now, and this is only my opinion, the distaste for sidearms at the moment isn't because of their power, it's simply that the ammo economy forces us into using them. A sidearm has the ability to over power any primary with ease, within its optimal range. When you have no special, being a common occurrence in the current state of things, you are simply at a disadvantage to a sidearm user. Ammo persists, more ammo is reimbursed on respawn if empty, and as it seems all this points to MORE slaying potential. This forces many into a position of "use this or do worse." Did you enjoy being an aggressive sniper, despite the horrid nerfs? A shotty warrior maybe? Maybe you were that elusive fusion main who loves to go for crazy plan c swaps, or cross map people with a saladins. Maybe you feel upset that your aggressive playstyles were almost taken from you entirely, especially in the 6v6 playlist. You have every right to be. Because forcing someone into a style of gameplay they don't enjoy IS NOT BALANCE. It is a lazy and unprofessional attempt to stir the pot. Bad move bungie. You may have forced primary fights, but you've removed a large portion of the fun for many.

  • Good, well thought out post. I think the crucible will settle down in a week or so and maybe players will revert to their old favorites (Plan C for me), especially in 6v6. I don't really play trials but I can imagine that that's a bigger problem. You either win the first round 3-0 or use sidearms to get ammo. Guardian.gg says over 30% of kills in trials are sidearms and shotguns are down to 3% this weekend. Either way it's clear Bungie didn't test the patch or think about the impact on all the game types and that's unprofessional.

Wormwood ftw. That's all I saw last night. Regime, Wormwood, NLB, and Eyasluna. Wormwood/Eyasluna are pretty sweet together. Peel off 3/4 of your enemy's life with sidearm, duck into cover switch to Eyasluna. Fight over. Works damn good against shotty rushers too.

          • Meh. I can't really tell the difference between them and HCs. I don't use either and their icons are both small, so not really concerned about them. Just happy shotguns are pretty much gone.

            • I used the Havoc Pigeon ever since the Taken King dlc was released and people still complained about how it's almost impossible for a sidearm to beat a shotgun (even a juggernaut Titan). All I can say to every player who got used to using shotguns is that I spent the same amount of time on sidearms before this patch. Just because people are starting to use them now doesn't mean they're OP. It only takes 4 precise headshots with a Havoc Pigeon to kill a guardian.

              • The choices are- 1 shot by shotty jugg, shotty rush, shotty slide. OR 3-6 shots from a sidearm. My choice is sidearm( least I have time to react) They didn't change sidearms what so ever, no one complained of respawn ammo, why now? Special ammo is everywhere, while your running through, every time you respawn. I have yet to not have special when I want it. ( given I use my zarinaea d most the time anyways) Nerf criers are killing all weapons, just stop it! The class/ perk nerfs were BS though

                • I switched to sidearms the day of the patch. Switched back to fusions the day after lol. I think theres more special now in 6v6 then before the patch. People just want hand outs instead of actually fighting people for crates.

I think the simple solution with sidearms, is not to carry over the excess ammo. I do feel that the 18/19 rounds that you initially spawn with, is what you should spawn with again after a death. I enjoy using sidearms, and I don't think by any means they are deemable as OP, but I do agree its overkill if a sidearm user can collect and max out special ammo, die, and still maintain over 100 rounds. That just goes completely against the grain of the special ammo changes. In short, always respawn with sidearm ammo, just make it the initial default amount each time.

                          • In a good place. TrueVanguard even said other specials are still good and easily outclass most sidearms but because everyone is so used to having ammo it's the go to. Although I have to say I 100% think they SHOULD NOT keep all that extra ammo you pick up. It gives too much of an insensitive to use over everything else because you literally can't run out. Please change to only spawning with he base amount

                            • My ratio of dying doesn't seem to change based on the meta. I die just as much as I always have, the only difference is that I am getting killed by different weapons. It is probably one of the perks of being a bit of a crappy player. If I roll into Crucible alone, I am going to be matched against people that are mostly within my skill neighborhood. I use the weapons that I enjoy, and I try to get at least semi-proficient in using them so that I maximize my fun. And where I'm at right now, I can usually come in in the top 3 on my team in a 6v6 match whether or not my team wins. (And I can usually come in in the top 4-5 in the match). But that is at my skill level going up against people who are around my skill level. Now when I play with a buddy of mine who is MUCH better than I am at PvP, I just get waxed. I can hardly touch anyone, and I die a LOT. They are just so much better than I am (at my buddy's level), I don't stand a chance. Being that I am not a great PvP player, the meta doesn't come into play for me as far as how much I die. It only changes the weapons that other players are using to kill me. Sure, I gave sidearms a try when the meta changed, and Trespasser seemed to be pretty effective, but I hardly ever change my weapons in PvP. I stick with my Primary as my......well, primary weapon. I mostly use whatever gun I enjoy playing with, and hope for the best. LOL. I have become a lot better than I was in Year 1, and I have been through all of the meta changes since then, and I can't say that I have noticed anything adverse about my experience in PvP as far dying more due to the weapons changes. My very first Exotic was a Suros Regime, and I used it for everything back then. PvP and PvE. Right up until it got its first nerf. Then I started using other things. It seemed that what worked for most people didn't work as well for me simply because I wasn't very good with the weapon or I didn't enjoy using that type of weapon. I try to keep it fun for me. I use what I enjoy playing with, and I play with it until I can become at least semi-proficient/semi-effective with it. (At least in my pond of smaller fish). Must be the perks of being a less-than-stellar player. LOL.

                              • Sidearms are not overpowered like you said. I feel like there is a sudden hatred for them since they have a great time to kill and has special on respawn. I personally believe that Bungie did a very lazy job at redesigning the special ammo economy. I think everyone should still have special ammo on respawn and instead, should spawn with 0 ammo for all special weapons. Kind of like the spring update except expanded upon. They should also buff snipers again so we may actually see more of them. I'd love to shake off the dust on my Zen Meteor.

                              • Most of it was simple math based on stats/spread sheets for the sake of manufacturing the probability of success for more players. The legs of the short and long games were chopped off for most players, shortening the playing field, and the one hit kills now greatly reduced across the board. These changes push most players toward a more forgiving neutral middle ground. That's the patch in a nutshell. Only the folks that want to believe they woke up better players overnight will disagree.
