The Most Sophisticated PVP Ever

That is to say, Destiny is the most sophisticated and ambitious FPS PVP ever developed. I look at COD and Halo as glorified games of tag. They're fun as hell but most guns are usable and Everyone pretty much has the same character. Kills come easier, etc. Destiny makes you work for kills. The time to kill is just long enough to give you an ulcer. Between the classes, sub classes, weapons rolls, armor builds and skill tree preference, a player can be radically different from their opponent. It's a very rich and dynamic experience. Not to mention the fascinating science that goes into the way the guns perform. The guns feel alive. They have personalities. We're attached to them. We love them as much as our own children. This isn't a diatribe of my musings on the topic of the crucible. I'm just giving some credit where it's due. We're pretty damn lucky to have Destiny at all. Not to mention that the crucible is the best PVP ever. ALL THAT SAID. I'm fully aware of the red bar curse. The infamous and and favorite Tefty topic: the dreaded net code. I am fully aware that the lack of dedicated servers greatly hinders the potential of what is already a fantastic game. I get that there's always an OP weapon, subclass or ability. I'M INTIMATELY AWARE OF THE NEGATIVES OF THE PVP EXPERIENCE. But all of that crap mentioned above will someday be remedied and put in the past forever. That's not the hard part. Creating what we now have, this utterly sophisticated, game changing evolution of the multiplayer experience was the hard part. Conceiving it and building it was the mountain Bungie had to climb. But they did it. They delivered far more than just a glimpse at the future of FPS PVP. They almost nailed it on the first try. So why do we complain so much about PVP? Wouldn't it be worse to see all of the ways the game design could be improved? To be totally disappointed by what could have been? I think so. I'm content because dedicated servers, a polished net code and 60 fps are on the way. This game will someday play like Jimi Hendrix did the guitar. We need to remember that. We need to remember that Destiny is already Jimi Hendrix. He just needs to refine his style a bit. It's like, 22 year old Jimi. That's such a far better position to be in than if Destiny was nowhere close to being Jimi and was more like the guy from Nickelback. You can't fix nickelback. You can fix 22 year old Jimi Because the law of inevitability says that 22 year old Jimi will someday become the legendary Jimi. So be grateful Bungie's on the path of inevitable greatness and maybe complain less about the same issues that they too despise and are hell bent on correcting.

    • Despite all the garbage that does need to be fixed such as the games terrible connection issues . I Agree that this games unique and sophisticated in depth customization and feel makes destiny my favorite FPS now and for many years to come . Im a huge halo fan and will always love Halo CE & H2 but Destiny now takes the #1 spot as my go to PVP game .

      • Yeah keep telling that to yourself, Destiny is one heck of a disaster after another. PvP rules this game yes, but in such an awful way that even PvE gets the shaft every time. The irony is this game was built solely on PvE, with PVP being the tertiary focus, second being loot and exploration.

I agree with most of your post.... But Destiny isn't the the pvp experience ever.......it's the best game ever. People will always moan about stuff but I have never spent so much time on a game as I have this..... This game even got me into pvp, even though I'm a lowly 0.8kd. Think most the saltyness is just people venting about getting killed in pvp. To me, two things need to be addressed. Cheating and dedicated servers. In reality, they would both be remedied by bringing the latter into play. Oh and bungie, if you're reading, please let me be in my inventory screen while flying in to a game instead of keep taking me to the cutscene I've watched a gazillion times.

          • It has the POTENTIAL to be the most sophisticated. PVP primaries are pretty watered down at the moment. If snipers and shotgunners are sophisticated then I'll have to rethink the entire game.

          • Yes a very entertaining post. If you truly believe Destiny delivers the best FPS PvP then more power to you but there is no balance in this game because it wants to be a loot fest rpg. I believe that is the biggest problem with this game. The beauty of loot orientated games is that someday you will be in the position where your character is OPAF but because you need to keep the PvP in check you cant have that so you end up with boring weapons. All major loot orientated games that of course have competitive PvP nowadays have 2 different types of gear (pve/pvp) because all developers realised you cant balance something like this. This makes for very boring loot in Destiny pve and pvp, there are no builds or synergies my friend nothing is alive you only find plastic/metal guns with stability perks and a handful of useful perks that mainly affect reload speed and be up to date with the current buffs/nerfs and that is your loadout. And prey to rng you wont get you mixed with some guy from Guatemala because then you will experience the true Destiny.

          • I think destiny is that game where you see potential and you blow your mind thinking how awesome it could be if they add little elements and fix the ones the game already has. Area chat and group chat is a must in a game with so many activities. Imagine how a area chat would change patrol or how easy would it be to get a group together in the tower. Joining a group should be fast, there is no reason to go to orbit when the guy is right next to you. Unlock hive bosses and the wolves pack. Im pretty sure a max light guardian could take on both. At lvl 20 unlock the hive knights at level 35 unlock the wolves. Add more enemies dont take them out of the game. Customize our guardian should be a must. Infusion on blue, purple and gold items. Options to apply shades to classes items or not. Make the artifact something we can see. Make a ring or necklace for artifacts. Add more modes to pvp. Is that hard to get a mode with no supers or nade and melee only?. Bring back the raids, leave weapons behind and bring back the sweet gear. Imagine having cloaks from ib year one and poe and osiris year one combine with year 2 ib, poe. How sick would a guardian look wearing the vog cloak with some osiris gear plus some raid gear. I could go on and on but man just think of the posibilities if they just add little things.

          • I agree. I am not a massive Pvper and don't have "mad skillz" but enjoy crucible more than any other game's fps pvp mode. On the subject of the higher TTK (I like the fact they do puns like that with a straight face) I think it is easy for the "nerf, buff, nerf, buff" crowd to underestimate how hard getting the balance between "a proper gunfight" that ends definitively and "tagged damage, run away, hide and heal" leading to more wounding and less kills (and wounding has not been an issue since someone, cough, invented regenerating health.) A marginal ammount less TTK would result in CoD style immediate kills, a little bit longer would give too much of an opportunity for cowards to flee and heal. On the whole, despite very different weapons being available, they get this balance right. The one/two shot type weapons have a real risk/benefit to them. I mean how many times have you killed a reloading sniper or got them between shots? I agree with OP that what we have is a very sophisticated PvP setup where tweaking your stats just marginally can make a difference and notwithstanding the obvious issues (I mean no-one takes kindly to shots not landing or instadeath by melee from someone on the other side of the map) it makes the crucible far more satisfying as there is a greater skill to luck ratio than you find elsewhere.

          • Read the first couple of paragraphs. You're kidding, right? When everyone has the same weapons it takes MORE skill, not less. In this situation the better player will win. In Destiny it's more about who has the strongest gear. If you take a really good player and give them a crappy weapon in Halo, they'll still do well because it's balanced. Do that in Destiny and they'll get rushed by a shotgun or sniped at every corner, or just blasted down by TLW in any hallway.

              • I think I found someone who doesn't understand what an arena style game is. Sad that people today think that free kills and guns so drastically different from one another equals skill. Because let's face it, in a 4v4 in Halo 3 where everyone spawns in with an assault rifle and magnum that isn't fair, right?

I respect your positive opinion of Destiny PvP, but unfortunately I don't fall into your camp. The core of a good PvP experience is a fully functional and reliable mechanism for competitive play. This is the base upon which all other aspects and elements of the PvP game are built. Destiny has never achieved this core/base. From the beginning there have been numerous and persistent 'technical issues,' for lack of a better term. Lag, glitching, phantom bullets, red bars, matchmaking fiascos, and on and on and on and on, ad nauseum. Those issues, in various incarnations, continue to this day. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. Until this most basic and necessary component of the Destiny PvP game is actually made functional and reliable, everything else related to the PvP will continue to be essentially irrelevant. Thus, I disagree with your assessment of this being the most sophisticated PvP game ever. It never actually made it past being one of the most basic of PvP games. The supers, and subclasses, and weapons, and perks, and balancing, and nerfs and buffs, and all other variables that stack on top of the core of the PvP game . . . well, they're nothing more than mental masturbation. Lipstick on a pig. Dust in the wind. You get the point.
