I'm not complaining at all. As an Xbox One player, I'm excited and curious as to what it is about this new DLC that makes it out of reach for "legacy" consoles. Any theories?

#Destiny

Better graphics, Vault space, more areas to enter, and it's current gen so buh bye ps3 and 360! Imagine what Destiny could have been if it was a current gen title in the first place.

4 RespuestasThe fact that the older consoles have only about half a gig of ram could help. That bungie has stated before they gotten rid of some things on old consoles to have other features be able to work. Probably too much for the console to handle.
-
Because 90% of destiny players are on ps4 and xbox one.
-
5 RespuestasIt's due to laziness and not enough money in last gen for them to do it. ~TheGreatAdidas
-
They would have to take away more content again. The developers have said that the reason strikes were removed was because of the lack of power on the legacy consoles.
-
Processing power of old consoles are not enough to run 1/3 of the code in TTK alone, so RoI... no.
-
Due to current, will be old this year, ps4 replaced by PS NEO, xbox one, replaced by xbox one s... xbox360 discontinued already.
-
Nothing. It just speeds up production times and allows for more focus on current gen.

37 RespuestasHonestly, nothing. There's no graphic improvement. The game is not a hard drive hog. It's all about business. Let's say of the 35 million registered users, 20% are legacy owners. Out of those 20%, which are 7 million users, only 50% will be upgrading to a new console. That's 3.5 million new systems and new Taken King Legendary Editions plus Rise of Iron that will be bought. There's also the platform subscriptions that will not be figured into this because some can be free and others can be carried over. Splitting the console sales in half, with Sony and Microsoft taking in 1.75 million new consoles each. Their sales revenue for just the standard brand new system would be: 490 million dollars (280 usd for xbox one) 610 million dollars (349 usd for PS4) Let's look at what Activision is making for a new copy of Taken King Legendary Edition: 56 million dollars (32 usd for xbox one) 70 million dollars (40 usd for PS4) And lastly Rise of Iron sales: 105 million dollars (30 usd) These are just figures using average price of a new system and new games discs with USD currency. Other world currency hasn't even been figured into this and if it was it would be a lot more. And who says Activision and Bungie are not getting kick backs from Sony and Microsoft for brand new system sales and subscriptions related to Destiny. Money rules at the end of the day.

An increase in mobs/players in areas. Even though the AI is handled server side, as is the actual location of players, an increase would result in higher processor/graphics demands then 360 may be able to handle. Which may be why there are few mmo's on consoles. This also applies to crucible matches. This would also explain why fireteams are 3 player, with raids allowing 6. Raids have an advantage, in that the processor load can be controlled by controlling how many enemies spawn in an area, and by spawning them in waves. So, yeah, a better processor is going to allow for a greater number of mobs/players to be spawned at one time. I do not anticipate denser meshes, as it is a waste of processing power that will go unnoticed, especially with players wanting 60fps or better.

1 RespuestaDue to the technical debt and limitations of the Tiger engine, they have no choice. The engine processing sound like it is literally at capacity with ROI (which is why year 3 will be more of the same garbage events from year 2). They said they literally cannot add anything new after ROI (maybe minor only) without having to actually remove some of the older content. They didn't say it in reference to PS3 only either when they stated that.
-
What "theory"? It was clearly said why
-
That's like asking why the legacy consoles couldn't support The Witcher 3 or Fallout 4. They just can't. Hardware limitations and all that buzz.
and don't say "well destiny isn't as big as those games" because those games aren't online multiplayer games. Being able to support online and the mechanics relatively smoothly takes a lot of power.
-
I imagine it had nothing to do with hardware capabilities. I think it's either a ) a marketing scheme to get legacy consoles to upgrade or b) it would take more effort to bring it to both where as they will be leaving them behind soon anyway.
-
Sexy systems only
-
No longer holding back 90% of there player base, by launching a better by launching a better product
-
its all about the limitations legacy had on current consoles. The current systems have more power to be harnessed, can't wait to see it. We best have more vault space lol
-
In one of the E3 interviews (or maybe the livestream) they said it should be apparent as soon as you step into the new content. They are able to harness more of the current gen power than before. The 360 and PS3 could hardly handle the current account of vault space (they had to turn off the weapon and armor previewing)
-
Probably bc the earth is flat, only plausible theory I can come up with
-
The old hardware is stretched to its limit. It doesn't have the power to keep up anymore.
-
It's the ability to develop software for two platforms instead of four. And since (according to Bungie) the players are 90/10 in favor of current gen hardware, why use valuable resources, time, and money to create software for 10% of the community? This way they have 100% of the workforce focused on their respective platform.

Randal the vandal will be firing rockets at the city wall the entire time the DLC is active.

3 RespuestasI think it is to do with the scale of the new playable area. They've already said that there will be 2 places to visit on Earth - a regular Y1 cosmodrome with no changes (I kinda hope that the Taken stay as hunting Zealots for exotics is fun) - The Plaguelands - which includes a winterised Cosmodrome, snow, a dead walker in the Divide, SIVA creeping in and all new space with Fallen SIVA infused enemies and structures. It seemed at first as if the Plaguelands would be slightly distant, but from the images we've seen with the destroyed section of wall it seems more and more as if the Plaguelands are directly adjacent to the Cosmodrome wall. It seems as if this revamped winter Cosmodrome is going to have new playable areas opened up on the other side of the wall, it's genuinely expanding into the surrounding terrain - and I don't think that the legacy consoles would be able to handle that. Especially not if we are going up on top of the wall with a massive render distance.
-
Working on a system as old as much of these kids is not fun nor is it cool.
-
In a way, nothing. ROI could work on old gen, or even on original Xbox and PS2, by simplifying graphics enough. The reason old gen isn't being supported is that old gen sales are no longer large enough to justify the additional costs for development, server management, sakes and distribution and marketing.
-
Its rumored the new area (the plague lands) will be bigger then any previous area since they wont need to be scaled back for last gen
