It looks inconsistent
Using the same tech that powers Battlefield and Need for Speed, you'd think that Catalyst would be quite the looker. And you'd be wrong. While it holds a steady frame rate, there's an abundance of jagged edges and low resolution textures. It's most inconsistent about character faces, as some look distinctively current generation while others look on par with what you'd expect from a game running Unreal Engine in 2001. The long loading times in excess of 20 seconds at times don't do it any favours either. Hopefully it looks better on the PS4 and PC.
The dialogue is cringe-worthy
While we're only a few hours in and aren't able to completely judge the game's plot, the dialogue seems like it was tacked on as an after thought. With cheesy lines and some distinctly unlikeable characters such as fellow runner Icarus, your foster father slash employer slash oddball love interest Noah, or the clingy Nomad, it's almost as annoying as 2015's Need for Speed if not more so. Keep your expectations suitably low or non-existent in this department.

I'm not going to sugarcoat it -- the story is horrible. Faith, Icarus, Noah (their boss), they're all generic, and every time they're on screen I audibly sigh. I thought that would be the case with Icarus for sure, but not everyone else, at least to this degree. It's not quite Metroid: Other M bad (okay, it kind of is), but it's not good either. To be frank, I don't know why DICE even tried, because while the first game didn't have a memorable narrative, it was also easily ignored, and not nearly as forced. Is it a big deal insomuch as it ruins the entire game? Not at all. You can skip cutscenes (which I don't do for the purposes of this coverage, but still check out mentally during), though. Thank God!
Disappointing but at least I'll get to save $60

Well I played it for around 8 hours yesterday, absolutely phenomenal game. It has a beautiful soothing yet intense soundtrack, and an absolutely incredible unique art style. I can see why some may not enjoy it, and as a big fan of the original I was hoping it would be a sequel.
-
From what I played in the beta, everything seemed fine. It looked really good, the gameplay was similar (but better) than the original, and I thoroughly enjoyed the little bit of story we had. I may buy the game a little later on, and to be honest... I'd probably be looking forward to the story the most.

2 RespuestasI'm sorta to the point where I'd seriously hesitate to buy anything Dice is involved in. So far, on the PS4, I've returned only two games within a week or two, and both were Dice games. For me, BF4 was buggy, glitchy, laggy, flashy, and cheap - lots of framerate issues, falling through the world, getting stuck on things in the environment, rubber-banding, delayed hit registering, inconsistent graphics, you name it. It was virtually unplayable. Battlefront had a Star Wars skin, and that's about the only good thing I can say about it. The gameplay was the same crap as BF4 and the graphics which were so hyped, in typical Dice fashion, looked flashy and cheap - poorly designed terrain that looked like it had been sprayed with Armor All, flashy lighting with lots of jaggedy edges, etc. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, yet stuck it back in the bag with the receipt and returned it the morning after its release. I've watched at least 30 mins to an hour of Mirror's Edge gameplay, and didn't see anything at all that looked interesting enough to make me want to give it a shot. Looks like my next purchase after getting thoroughly burned out on Dark Souls 3 will probably be Uncharted 4, along with the Nathan Drake collection.

25 RespuestasEditado por Psychic Donuts: 6/9/2016 3:49:59 AMHell no. This game is everything a Mirror's Edge fan would want. A great new combat system. Huge open world. A beautiful landscape. What more could we have asked for? 72 means a flop now? What standards have we come to...

Editado por Mooka: 6/9/2016 11:26:16 PMMirror's Edge was never about the plot. If you plan on playing the game expecting anything other than doing speed runs, or running away while free running, then the game isn't for you. In the first game I skipped every cut scene knowing the plot would be awful. I still got countless hours just playing the game over and over trying to see how quickly I could get through it. On a last note, I will point out that I do hate the level up system. It leads to time trials being unfair. If I have the roll and quick turn while you don't, I can literally do more combos then you opening up new routes. It's a very poor game design choice.

Your face looks like a flop

When a "game review" doesn't include "gameplay" :/
-
20 RespuestasSo how's the gameplay? Cause that's 70% of what makes a game good. Graphics should never matter in the first place, if it wasn't for the push to HD super realistic graphics of last generation I assure you almost no one would care about the visual fidelity of a game.

You'll get the fanboys panties in a bunch

I own it. I may return it.

1 RespuestaI was expecting an IGN review to be in here IGN review: Mirrors Edge Positives: parkour Negatives: not call of duty 6/10

PC specs seem oddly demanding =/

2 RespuestasI beat the first one many years ago and it was meh to me. Not excited at all for the second one
-
4 RespuestasAfter beating the game, I can't see why people dislike the story or dialog.

1 RespuestaEditado por shell: 6/9/2016 12:09:00 AMI watched some gameplay, and it looks like it holds your hand way too much. Major turn off. Also, why the fuck does it have a level system? The original was all about the skill of the player, not the player character.

2 RespuestasEditado por What I Look Like: 6/8/2016 12:59:42 PMHaven't seen anything but people saying they're looking forward to Catalyst in these forums, now ONE article gets posted and every one is back to trend city! Never fails. "Yes, there is a correct answer when it comes to opinions about video games" Guys, we're supposed to surpass neanderthals, not make them look like Stephen Hawking at a brainiac convention.

4 RespuestasIf the reviewer is using phrases like "cringe-worthy" to describe dialogue then he's probably a great reviewer. Sounded whiny and nitpicky. Seriously 2001 graphics being brought up?
-
16 Respuestas72 is a flop? I'm now convinced the review scale is meaningless.

3 RespuestasI wasn't big on the first mirrors edge, but after playing the closed beta and now the trial I can say I'm buying the game. The only thing I agree with in this post is the bad resolution on character faces, but when the main purpose of the game is free running parkour I rarely pay attention to the unimportant npcs they added to make the city feel populated. Everything else I disagree with since its the writer's opinion and nothing else

Editado por TotallyNotDrew: 6/6/2016 4:52:19 PMI was a big fan of the first game, and after hearing the change to open world, I was getting really excited. But after seeing the artistic change, gameplay change, and what seems to be a bigger emphasis on the story I'm pretty disappointed. Edit: After reading through the reviews themselves it seems the gameplay and overall level design is pretty good. Shame you only included the negative points each reviewer brought up.
-
Editado por FalconNCE: 6/6/2016 3:31:07 PMI don't care what people think. I'm still hyped.
-
Editado por SirBigWater: 6/6/2016 8:52:16 PMI like when people misuse the word "flop". It will mostly appeal to the fans of the original game. From what I have played in the beta, it was pretty good. Graphics are pretty, but I guess people care too much about them.
-
3 RespuestasI've played about an hour and a half. It feels a lot like the original, but faster paced and better combat. I've seen a few minor graphics things, but it's just blurry is all, no big deal.
