Disconnecting every 15 minutes

Hello, I love Destiny, and have been playing it since it released. That being said, I have had this problem basically since I first started playing. Everything will be fine, playing in a raid, strike, patrol, crucible, tower, or even just loading, when all of a sudden... Bam! Disconnected from live. I have to sign in again, then start from Destiny's main menu, verify my content, select my character, and try to join back in to whatever I was doing. This happens every 15-20 minutes seems like. Sometimes I get lucky and it's every hour, some days I can't even play for 5 minutes, and just give up. Destiny is the only game that does this. Every other online game (Xbox 360, PC, or iOS) works splendidly. Does my internet somehow sense when I'm in the last round of Prison of Elders and decide now would be a good time to lag out, or does destiny have some problem with Cox Internet, or is my Xbox 360 just too old these days? I will keep playing the game whether or not this is fixed, but I'd love to know if there's something I can do. I've already tried googling answers, I've restarted my xbox and my router, I've done my best to make sure I've got the right network settings, but to no avail. I often get a caterpillar code, or baboon. recently it's been almost exclusively an Xbox message that says "Disconnected from Live" and I get kicked back to destiny's sign in screen. Thanks in advance, McGoogle247

  • Not an Xbox user, so don't know the menu options for those consoles....but I had this once with my PS3 and my ISP fingered the problem and offered a solution that has worked for a long time now. It in fact was the one thing preventing me from even getting any more online console games and even a PS4 for the longest time. The problem was high fragmentation getting to PSN. The Tier3 tech thought perhaps as an anti-DoS measure they may have done something with packet sizes to help stem off the attacks, so we started fiddling with the MTU settings until we saw improvements (couldn't run ping-tests to find it, as security wouldn't let us ping them). On the PS3/4, you go into the network setup menus and manually configure the connection. If you were using automatic settings, you will want to check the status of the connection before making changes and make a note of what the IP, Gateway, Subnet Mask, and DNS settings are first so you can plug them in. You should also go into your Router's GUI to bind the IP in the DHCP section as well so it doesn't hand that address out to another device and cause a conflict in the future. Now, do the manual config and setup the core settings for IP, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS and such. As you progress you should get an option for MTU settings, defaulting to Auto or maybe set at a value somewhere from 1476 to 1500. You want to manually set it for something below 1476. In my case, what worked best for my systems was a flat 1400. Note that when you run your connection tests, you might notice the upload/download speeds are a hair slower than what you would expect. This change is causing the system to break the upload data into slightly smaller packets, so it will increase the amount of handshaking taking place to send/receive the data. The unfortunate side effect is that it makes your network work a little harder to get the same amount of data through, but in most cases the hit is negligible. We're talking a drop of something like 18Mb to 17.2 or 17.3 downstream and 1.3Mb to 1.1 or 1.2 on the upstream in my case. YMMV with this tinkering. All I know is that it seemed to resolve things for my Playstation consoles here on TWC.

  • Hello, I've received similar errors when I lived overseas. Low and behold, it was my ISP that was causing this issue. If I were you, I would try giving a hard start to your router and checking it's connection status. Some tips are: -Test connection on a laptop or desktop while wired, to see an accurate reading of your upload and download speeds. Your console does not accurately portray these speeds. -Delete your Cache in your console. Deleting unnecessary files and clearing it up can help it work a little better. -Contact your ISP and have them troubleshoot your connectivity with you. Sometimes, it just takes giving customer service a call to get your internet to stop acting up. If all else fails, maybe look into upgrading to the next-gen console. That's a pricy alternative, but you could be opening the door for better playability. I hope your issue gets resolved!

  • Hi McGoogle247, You may want to try clearing your console cache as a first troubleshooting step. Here is a guide on how to do so: https://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Article/12539
