What's your raid team horror story at Oryx? The Nightmare Continues

I've noticed a pattern with my (random) raiding teams at Oryx and was wondering how common this is for other players. This applies only to KF Oryx Challenge Mode, 16 bomb strategy in hard mode. I always join groups that have at least moderate experience like myself. I'm by no means an expert raider as I started more recently, playing sporadically, basically on one character. But I know it well enough to know the Oryx fight can go downhill fast if you don't kill him the first 1-2 tries. So the bottom line is this: The more attempts my teams make at Oryx to finish the dang raid, the worse (as a team) we perform...with some exceptions. A number of times I've had the fortune to kick Oryx ass in 14 minutes, 1st or 2nd try. Or rarely everyone pulls it together on (facepalm) the 10th try. BUT.... It's weird, just today we got through Daughters 1st try, peice 'o cake...so Oryx should be no prob...lol. And it ALMOST was. So, in my typical nightmarish scanario, if it takes multiple runs trying to beat Oryx, in the first attempt or two my team goes through the whole fight smooth silk, everyone knowing their role and getting it done fine -- only to have something go wrong detonating the bombs. The cause could be any number of inexplicable screw-ups, miscommunications, or gasp, Bungie bungles. Then the typical scanario is like this... "Don't worry guys we got this, we just about had it"...someone takes a bathroom break...the fight gets triggered early/ WIPE. Round 4...someone dies early in the shade or on a plate/ WIPE. Round 5, someone runs out of special or heavy amo..."got killed by the acolyte eye"/ WIPE. Round 6 people are trying to stay positve (overhearing sighs of frustration). Round 7 a light eater knight slips by and gets a bomb...."just wipe it...amo run". Round 8 an oger is killed out of place, "don't worry we can have the floater detonate that bomb"...the floater/Titan dies...can't five man it..."WIPE it". Round 9 the runner is now impatient and pressing, he doesn't stay on plate 1 long enough for it to be activated, "Oh crap, now I died!". "Um, I gotta go after this one guys"...(thinking...yea me too...me three...). "A Fireteam member has left" I'm thinking: guess were done, nothing to see here folks. But wait a freekin minute, we had a decent team...and we basically had Oryx's ass beat - twice. I'm thinking, "WTF I quit this frikin game, I just wanted my 335 loot. Bungie hates me. Where's the beer? That is until tomorrow when I'll have to round up a (usually all new) team that's fresh to finish this stupidly easy, extremely frustrating part of the game. I'm not bashing my fellow gaurdians, I just noticed the more raids I do that this trend is emerging. Here are my theories. What are yours? I chalk it up to: 1) Some players getting tired toward the end of the raid, especially if in a late time zone. And, if you don't get Oryx in the first two attempts (but come very close), 2) people get over confident and careless, or 3) more nervous and tense causing a rushing of the timing, 4) increasingly pissed off that it should have been done an hour ago therefore button mashing their controller, 5) passive agressive revenge sabotage after the team's ears have endured the guy with the horrible echo in party chat who has his five loud drunk friends commenting on the gameplay in the background along with his nagging wife yelling for him to get off and put the screaming kids to bed. And no, mute didn't work properly of course. "Disclaimer:" The names and descriptions of the gaurdians contained within have been changed to protect their identities. Of course some of the examples were exagerated as a joke (but not by much). So do any of you have any theories? And please don't say: play the raid, or, git good, or don't play with noobs etc... Thx, peace out. Update 5-12-16 so I set up that Oryx game...two players even have 40 HM clears, "nice, this will be one and done." Umm...WRONG. I can't lay all the blame on my team mates only because I have not spent the time to learn how to run the relic yet. But I know every other role, and f×ck it happened yet again. I just wasted another 2 hrs of my life with a team that could not get it done. These folks supposedly have 10 to 50 raid clears. Although we wiped quickly the first 4-5, games, they got it together finally, but the runner asked someone else to call the bomb detonation. On the last phase, the Vessel got loose so the runner asked for help as it went all the way to the back of the room. I died helping kill it, self-resurected, made it back to my bombs with plenty of time, yelling out my status. The caller waited way too long after adds were killed, hesitating for some dang reason. We all went in at the same time but too late...then we wiped. I swear someone is trying to torture me. Same BS different day. Three attempts at detonating the bombs, all fails. Like 1.5 hrs for the entire raid, and 2.5hrs (additional) at Oryx. I am sick of the torture. As for my mistakes, it's when I start having to do my job over and over again (after almost finishing especially). I eventually lose a little focus, and eventually something dumb may happen but rarely anymore. I actually would estimate I've spent multiples of time on Oryx compared to the raid as a whole. I should have 50 clears, not 14. I really need a capable and regular team or I'm not going to put myself through it anymore. It's a game and supposed to be fun dang it. If anyone is intetested in testing out making a group with me, or inviting me in to an existing group, send me a message on ps4. I run a 333 Warlock main. I recently ran my new Titan defender (fully upgraded) through a normal and hard raid. I also just leveled up Hunter nightstalker.

    • We just detonated our 16 bombs and shot oryx in the stomach. His health was completely gone. My smart ass decided to place a bubble right in front of everyone while we were shooting him up front. With my bubble randomly appearing in the way of most of our fireteam, we didn't get enough dps on oryx and we wiped. I was glad I was playing with my regular group of friends or I probably would he been kicked for that lol.

      • Made group with the intention of carrying a friend through hard so he could catch up on light lvl. We get to Oryx, I take the time to explain the strategy for 16 orb, if on a pillar snipe knight or call out a miss so the Titans in mid can get it. My friend is in the middle helping kill ogres, I'm running, and the 2 of the 3 on pillars are random (another friend I raid with a lot). We'd do fine for the first couple of waves then around the third/fourth I'd be told someone missed their bombs. It was deduced to be the guy on pillar 2. We shrug it off and just try to add an extra wave of bombs to compensate. The next wave he misses the knight again. Wipe. I callout his gamer tag, do an example of where his Knight spawns, Pillar 2 guy just blows us off and doesn't watch. My friend & the random on pillar 1 say they'll try to get his knight (this is where I learn my friend had gotten it the first couple of waves last time). We try again, miss the knight on the 4th round (random 1 died from adds trying to get the second knight, I don't think of it as his fault). We try a many more runs, still fail. The good random that communicates quits, I call it a night. Next day we get new randoms, my inexperienced friend gets a pillar & snipes his knight, we succeed. I like to think of myself as the kind of guy willing to help inexperienced players, I take the time to go through, discuss, & demonstrate the mechanics & strategies involved in a raid. When a player doesn't do his job because he doesn't understand what to do, that's totally fine, everyone was a newb at some point. When he tries to act like he does know what he's doing, refuses to communicate that he doesn't know what he's doing (the player above had a very soft voice & would say yeah or yes), then fails to demonstrate his understanding of what is required in his role, the endeavor will lead to failure unless everyone else can over compensate for arrogance. I just wanted to vent my frustrations from the experience & hopefully try to encourage players that are inexperienced with a certain aspect of a group activity to speak up on said inexperience. My friend who hadn't done challenge mode before basically learned 2 roles through the experience. I get there are a lot of stupidly elitist requests on the forums for groups, but not knowing what to do when going into those groups will just lead to harsh backlash.

      • My question is why are people still doing the raid? It's boring now and there's much more activities. Three of coins, CoE, Iron Banner, probably Trials (I'm not sure anymore it's a waste of time), and specific strike loot all helped me get two characters to 335

          • With a semi-competent lfg group. A couple wipes, nothing terrible and then we detonate all 16 orbs and Oryx is almost dead. And I'm the only one shooting his chest, everyone else is celebrating, dancing, being super-cool. And he doesnt die....yup, they forgot to shoot the chest... Good times

Edit: Just got a 335 helm This has always held back the progress of my helmets lol. After like 3 dumb wipes I can usually tell it's over and mute my mic unless I have something to cal out. This whole raid takes 45 minutes then an hour and a half for oryx. Bring back bosses that are 1/2 bullet sponge 1/2 mechanics. The oryx fight is interesting but one thing goes wrong and that's it. The collective brute strength of the team ,and sheer will, aren't enough to make up for mistakes. That's something you'd like to be possible in any game where the concept is based off reaching higher level. If all else fails, we go super Saiyan and melt the boss with our exotic weapons (RIP Gally)

                • 1. Random LFG couldn't be runner, refused to cooperate and sat at the plate. Said he wouldn't play unless he was runner. 2. A so called "experienced" runner, kept jumping on the relic plate to start... WTF are you doing man? 3. Explaining over and over "you can't do no Knight strat on challenge" 3a) I can't kill the Knight "OK, go Centre with the Titan". Says he can only do plates. Another TM kills his Knight. Gets wrecked by ship. 3b) Go centre. Goes there, wipes twice, "Stay in the Titan bubble pop out just to kill Ads" dies collecting an engram. 3b) Try again, makes it to 2nd shade round. Gets killed by ads, on the outside. 3c) Boot from fireteam, 5 man it. 4. End up meeting I'm only the runner guy again. Acts even more like a douche when he can't run or do plates. Same crew as 5 man before, figure we'll do it again. We get to last bombs, guy realises were gonna do it and then asks "what can I do, we've got this" boot from FT. 5. (Not mine) Same guy again (now running, yay for him) recognises player clan (former) name. Decides to let off bombs early on last Oryx slam, team wipes and he tells them all to fvck themselves and leaves. 6. General scrublords who brag about knowing the raid schematics and have done numerous times, will show you the emblem as proof (even when it's not asked or necessary) and proceed to ask ridiculous questions like, "should I use my Spindle or Defiance against WP and Gol?" Check stats, 3 completions.

                  • Hm challenge @ oryx. Clan mate said "oh no guys! This storm made my router catch fire!" On the 2nd round of blights. He then proceeds to set his mic down and go afk. His character sat there for the rest of the challenge while we 5 manned. After the encounter we watched him run over and get the loot and dip to orbit. Needless to say, he's no longer a clan member.

                      • My clan has a nickname we bestow on anyone who screws up at the very moment of near-completion. We call that person Benny Hunt. Ben Hunt is an Australian football player. In the 2015 Rugby League football grand final, Hunt fumbled a ball kicked at him. He was mere meters from his own "touchdown" line. This gave possession back to the opposition. As if this wasn't bad enough, this occurred in overtime, where the first team to score wins. His fumble allowed the other team to score a field goal, thus winning the championship. I currently am the holder of the Benny Hunt moniker. We were running Oryx on Heroic and hadn't finished it before. We had spend around an hour and a half on him when we finally had a good run. We had all 16 blights ready to detonate. We ran. I ran. All blights detonated...except ONE of mine. We died. Failed. And now I have a new name.

Im at the point i know based on the first run if the team will get it done the most i stay for is 3 tries. Mostly get it done first try so yesterday ranndom team first try 10 minutes done on my titan. 2nd run warlock playing with 4 randoms and my friend i always play with he was a titan and getting 4th blights. Percect run and we go to detonate and my stupid friend runs to the wrong blights (he knows better and just wasnt paying attention) 2nd try we wipe at 12 blights because runner fell. I was done but gave them one more chance since it was my friends fault. We get to 12 a titan dies bwing stupid but luckily we finished it 5 man and got it done 3rd try.

                        • just ran with a classic know-it-all nelly. you know, the guy who is trying to tell everyone what to do, but cant keep track of platforms, cant run aura/gaze or relic, and, even though they are a titan, insists on taking a platform, from which they don't kill the knight they are supposed to, and don't say anything about it until someone (me, the hunter in the middle...) says, "somone didn't get their knight"... fun times. best part is when said fool starts raging about how bad the group is, and the communication sucks, and quits. because, you know, watching the person before you to see when they jump up is sooooo hard. smh.

                          • I argued with an lfg team last week for several rounds that something was off with our dps. All 330 plus, but barely got warpriest in 2 rounds and had continuous trouble with staggering oryx. They told me I was crazy, that I was lying about the dps a group I was with the week before was lower light and did more damage. After a few more failures, I decided to not shoot and observe. Turns kut, half the team didn't know they had to leave the titan bubble to do damage. Smh.

                            • Last night, my controller batteries died without warning during second ogre phase. And I had just changed them three days earlier. One team I was on wiped because a warlock on a plate threw a nova bomb at an ogre, causing the platforms to fade since the super lifts you in the air. One team wiped because a hunter on a plate shadestepped and it took him off the plate. Nobody uses no knight anymore, but back when that was common, you'd have a guy on a plate sometimes who would stand in the middle. We'd say "literally sit on the back edge and do nothing." He would crouch in the middle. After he would die and we'd wipe, I would jump on his plate and say "like this" and sit on the back edge. He would say "oh, actually sitting down!" Yeah, remember when we said "literally sit"?
