My thoughts after playing Division Beta...

...now hear me out folks. I don't usually post these kinds of messages, as my profile will demonstrate. So before you start shooting your mouths off, take note that I'm saying this from a real place. Comparing Destiny's Beta to the Division's...Ubisofts new cooperative online RPG...has won me over far more than Destiny's ever did. It's true! From the rich dialog and constant trickle of real time information and backstory, to the sheer level of loot, vanity items and on-the-fly weapons modding, the Division has managed to demonstrate in an open beta alone just what an open world cooperative RPG should be. I can't honestly think what the game is lacking. It does everything that the genre is supposed to and I found myself saying "why the hell couldn't Bungie have just done that??" Scraps of audio recordings, drone footage, holographic representations of riots and diaries are scattered across New York, layering on the lore. Every inch of your character and his or her gear can be modified. Levels and loot are sensibly managed. Armor makes your defense go up, tech makes your cooldowns run faster and stronger weapons makes you deadlier. The best gear is determined by your level and every piece has varying stats, making no two weapons the same. I don't usually do PVP and quite frankly hate it in Destiny for the sole reason it's inclusion is forced and nonsensical in the overall world of Destiny. The Dark Zones in the Division is a practical explanation of WHY you fight others. Going into a PVP area is encouraged and it's a thrilling, unforgiving mad-dash for the best loot! There isn't a single thing that feels cheap, second rate, money-grubbing or forced about it all. So all I have to say is... Why? Why Bungie, didn't you really look at what Destiny SHOULD have been? Ubisoft spent the time, put in the effort and have just out-performed your entire game and it's 3 expansions with a single Beta test. So with all that said, and to quiet down all of the naysayers, when The Division is released, I will be breaking down all of my gear in Destiny and deleting my characters. Take care all. I'm done.

    • I agree with your assessment of The Division....but not your comparison to Destiny. 1. Hands down, The Division is a better Action-RPG than is Destiny...and Ubisoft has only show us a TINY portion of what the game has under the hood in that regard. It will be a HELLUVA lot of fun exploring that. But Ubisoft has a LONG history of making these kinds of games, so they should be good at it. This is Bungie's first attempt at this kind of game. 2. The Division emphasizes the RPG elements over the shooter elemetns of the game...but both are very good. Destiny emphasizes shooter over RPG....but made a strong step towards making the game a much better ARPG with TTK. I expect future release to do the same. Even though that is kind of hard to have faith in at the moment, given the PvP emphasis of Year Two. 3. Based on what we've seen so far, unfortunately, the game is lacking a viable end-game. While the Dark Zone is a very interesting mixture of PvP and PvE. This game will still lose a lot of players if the DZ is the only end game. It is EXTREMELY unfriendly to solo players. People will eventually tire of replaying story missions on higher difficulty settings, and some people just aren't going to want to be bothered with the mechanics of how the DZ operates. You'll have people whining on one side (Sir Wallen) that is not a PVP free-fire zone....and other people angry because they don't like PVP under any circumstances. 4. Destiny's problem isn't that its NOT The Division. Its that NO ONE -----including Bungie----can seem to come to any consensus on what it is and what it should be. You have its PVE playes base generally agreeing with you. That it needs to be a MUCH better, MUCH DEEPER RPG, and not just rely on its shooter mechanics. But you have a strong PVP community that basically want to sterilize the game of any of its RPG elements...and basically turn the game PVE play into your typical shooter campaign..and Destiny into a reskinned Halo 2. ...and the problem is that Bungie is tyring to serve both "masters"....and you can't. Part of the reason why The Division is making such a strong showing as a RPG...is that they are making NO effort to satisfy the twitch shooter/tactical shooter crowds. They have made it clear that The Division is first and foremost an RPG. They will offer PVP to those who want ti....but it will not be allowed to dominate or dilute the RPG experience. Unfortunately, there is no such clarity-of-vision from Bungie on such fundamental issues. The vacillate on the big things like this...but then are annoyingly stubborn about small---seemingly inconsequential------things.

      • If someone can still be so hyped for the division after this beta then what the fûck is wrong with you. So the beta was alright, but really nothing special. But I've been trying to figure out what the fûck you're actually supposed to do in it, if that's how the dark zone will be in the actual game except bigger then that's a shit on our face. Also the fact that this game is the most non single player friendly game I've ever played is pretty shitty

        • For one, you are in the honeymoon phase of a brand new game. The hype will wear off after a while and you'll see the game properly. Two, Destiny has just as much backstory and lore in the Grimoire. Everyone has a smartphone these days and the app works on Windows, iOS, and Android so there is no reason not to have it if you play Destiny. You don't even have to pause the game since you can just pop open all this Grimoire stuff on your phone instead of in-game. Three, the PvP in Destiny is entirely explained. The Crucible exists for Guardians to test their skills upon each other and improve themselves. I'm pretty sure this one is even explained in-game and not just the Grimoire. Missing that information is your own fault. Four, Destiny weapons are just as varied when you consider perks and the different layouts for manufacturers. It's incredibly unlikely you will ever see two of the exact same guns. The vanity items are definitely a standout feature, though, and something Destiny really needs.

              • I liked the Division beta more than Destiny's. There's no contest there. However, there's not nearly enough there yet to formulate an opinion on which is the better game. After all, those of us that swooned over Destiny's beta were disappointed as well when playing the actual game. Don't misunderstand me. I like Destiny. It just wasn't what I was expecting. That said, Division looks good to me so far and I do plan on getting it. My only concern I had through both betas is the Dark Zone. It's fun at first but becomes repetitive quickly. Obviously, Dark Zones will also have a part to play in endgame content. However, it worries me that they haven't even hinted toward any sort of endgame yet. To me, that means either there is no endgame outside of loot grind, they're not confident people will like it, or want it to be a surprise. All of which bother me because I like to know what to expect. I don't need specifics. All I want to know is if there's more than just an endless grind waiting at the end for me. After all is said and done, Destiny and Division are just two different games that do things their own way in the same genre. Regardless, I'll play both and probably like both. That's all it comes down to.

                • I only played this beta to see what the new mission was like in terms of scope. I liked it, it was a fun challenge. However, you can't compare it to destiny, its not what destiny should have been, its a totally different concept. I don't think you can compare it to destiny in quality stakes either, this sort of comparison should be made in 17-18 months time, once the rose tinted new game specs have worn off and the game is entering its second year. As much fun as both 'betas – see demos' were, and as excited as I am about the full game, I can't see it staying as exciting long term as other titles have.

                • Why delete your Destiny stuff? I haven't played Destiny in a month and I'm excited for the Division, but I'm keeping my Destiny gear. The Taken King was a great expansion, and I enjoyed my time with it. I've moved on as the content and events aren't holding my interest, but that doesn't mean there won't be anything worth coming back for down the line.

                • In my opinion, the Dark Zone is a lot more interesting and fun than Destiny's Crucible. The PvE on the other hand feels pretty similar to each other. You'll either love that or hate that. But Dark Zone...man I can't see how anyone could hate that. It's so fun to get in a group with your friends and roll up behind people and just murder the -blam!- outta them. And then holing up on a roof while frantically trying to survive against the rest of the server...so awesome.

Love it so far. I only wish you could crouch. Ya its cover based but its also Line of Sight detection. So when your in cover and select to move to another cover, most times your character stands up and runs and gets seen. Being able to have a crouch option, (the cover button when not looking at cover) would make it better at getting in closer and all. Just my opinion.

                    • I'm pretty stoked for The Division, and I agree even the Open Beta has more content and fun factor to it than Destiny's entire cycle. However I think the Darkzone will need some additions, such as Encounters, Side Missions, etc. It's a great game so far but killing average groups of 4-7ai, and hunting rogues/going rogue will start to drag out I'm sure. It'll be interesting to see what "Special Events" or whatever Season Pass holders will get access to.

                      • LOL Ah man, you kids and your knee-jerk opinions get me every time. If you actually stopped and thought about it for two seconds rather than getting all worked up over the shiny new thing you got to experience, you'd see there is plenty about the division to be skeptical about/disappointed in.
1). Cover-based shooters are clunky. Period. End of story. The division plays reasonably well, but that's a limiting factor from minute one. 2). The dark zone is TERRIBLY IN NEED OF A REDESIGN, as is the rogue/PvP system (which, let's be honest, is the entire selling point of the game. 3).replayability. Is it there? We'll have to wait and see. I'd give this a coin flip's chance. 4).gear customization. This is a joke. Higher damage;higher defense;ability cool downs. More expensive gear is better. That's it? That's an "in depth" rpg element? Give me a break. Battlefield 4 has a more complex weapon modding system than this. I realize the modding system hasn't been on full display, but unless they roll out something really unexpected, it's just another ho-hum aspect to a game that's shaping up to be good. Not great.
I'm looking forward to playing the game, but come on man. Use your head at least a little bit.

                        • This game will be the Destiny of 2016. People will hype it up so much only to realize how stale it really is once it comes out. I know it's a cover-based shooter but 90% of the game is you hiding behind cover and the other 10% is walking, I honestly have no idea how people find that entertaining. Similar to how destiny had the problem of most of the gameplay being you killing stuff while dinklebot opened a door, the division's gameplay will be 3 hours of hiding behind cover waiting for the enemy to pop his head up

                          • The only thing they did better was the inclusion of the lore, and even then it's too soon to tell if it's going to last. Everything else has the chance of getting stale real fast. I've played through the pve portion of the Division and tried the dark zone and I'm done with it in a day. It's still the same loot based grind, just with a different medium. What's the point of having picked up 9 different one pads that aren't as good as the pair I already have? Grind grind grind. Yes the inventory management is slightly better. But the actual play is clunky and frustrating at times. The division is the item manager destiny should have had. Destiny is the game play the division should have.

                            • Honestly I'm the complete opposite. Wasn't that hyped for Destiny till the beta when I fell in love with its controls and awesome gameplay. Until launch when I was dismayed by the lack of content. Was hyped for The Division until I played it. Controls are iffy and gameplay is just okay. Nothing special modding on the fly is cool but the loot system is meh and the RPG elements are pretty much nonexistent which kinda saddened me. On the while it's not that great looking I love the weather effects! Every game should seriously have that kind of system. Got into a firefight in a blizzard and it was awesome.
