Where did it go wrong?

While sat enjoying a quiet Boxing Day I'm wondering why I've lost the urge to switch the ps4 on and play destiny, why was year 1 such fun and where has it gone? I realise some people won't read the wall of text below so I've put the conclusion up here in the spoiler, the reasoning is below it if you are interested in how I got there. If you disagree with the spoiler I urge you to read the reasoning before jumping to conclusions. My views are pretty much from a pve perspective, I barely play Pvp due to slightly slow internet which is exaggerated by the poor PvP setup in this game.
So I realised, I'm bored of shooting the same enemy (just adds) for minutes on end, emptying magazine after magazine on one add without even getting a look at the main enemy or any other adds. Any weapons that we did have to counter these health monsters have been nerfed, left behind, or don't exist now(elemental primaries, fun exotics ) Tedious. It needs more adds but with less shields/health, or weapons that counter their shields/health. These encounters can be the same length, just with more feeling of achievement and involvement. The fun is being a powerful guardian who matches or dominates his enemy. Having a BFG is fun! Being the weak little underdog is getting (has got) boring.
I figured the rot started for me when TTK dropped and my "godlike" guardian on his Etheric boosted raid gear was now outgunned by a green gear wearing noob, but that still didn't explain why I don't enjoy it now. I ran though the obvious answers, poor or irrelevant activity reward and constant weapon "balancing" making all my weapons virtually identical. While the the rewards are a factor, it's not huge, as I still used to play for fun when not trying to win anything. The weapon balancing issue isn't wholly a factor but is part of the problem. Equipping a big gun that did monster damage was fun. They don't really exist anymore, exotics are barely any different to a good legendary. They were "exotic" for a reason, they were OP, they kicked ass. They were a weapon you equipped, knowingly forfeiting another monster weapon in a different slot. Now I often find myself running purely legendaries. That's not right. Then it dawned on me, the problem of not enjoying it for me started with PoE, the introduction of hoards of ridiculously tough, yellow bar enemies that swallow every bullet/rocket/energy bolt you can carry, without dying, but still one shot you back if you dared to pop your head out of cover, and that's just the adds! This trend of making more and more invincible enemies has continued into TTK, where during taken corruptions several yellow bar enemies spawn and release a constant stream of dark ball attacks at you. Strikes are full of elemental shielded enemies, but we're not allowed elemental primaries, deliberately to make these encounters drag out. So by trying to extend playtime they have drained the fun out in the process. Like watering a nice drink down, yes there's more of it, but it tastes like shît. On a slightly different note, I love using hand cannons but am sick and tired of shooting fresh air when then taken constantly "blink" on the harder strikes, so I barely use them now. You may not agree with this, that's your right. But It's how I feel, it's why I don't even want to turn on the game I loved for a year. Guardian down.

Do you remember VoG? Do you remember when we could go through the vault and find a countless amount of secret passages and chests? When we cooperated with our team as 6 people were defending confluxes in pairs as waves of enemies approached? I do. And those days were my favorite days of Destiny. Back before everything was changed. When enemies weren't too tough, they just required teamwork. Also back when our gear dropped at the maximum level. Once you got it, you didn't need duplicates. I miss the old Destiny.

    • I agree. The game's just not fun for me anymore. Just a mindless shooting gallery best suited for children. VOG was fun and blamming CE was a laugher to me and my mates. TTK is just too serious. No time for chuckles. Might as well play alone with FO4. At least there's a story and character dev.

      • Yeah the old night falls where a breeze especially with a burn, Fatebringers/fangs little outing for patience and time and and maybe a swop out for thunder lord Or maybe VOC and icebreaker then swooping for Gally at the boss. Having all the right guns made u godly in a NF...but hey remember we EARNED THE RIGHT after hundreds of hours of game play...now we get nerf'd to nothingness

        • the progression system just isn't very addicting in TTK WAY too grindy and RNG past about 290. Too many garbage drops that don't generate addictive dopamine for the player. Crucible doesn't generate reliable upgrades and pretty much all content that uses matchmaking isn't a source of reliable upgrades. If you have no further tracks for reliable upgrades the games loses its luster pretty quickly. Players are gettting REALLY burnt out on not being able to access raids and trials without an outside group finder. Feels like losing part of the game you paid for. Not an addicting feeling. Bungie added lots of mostly annoying mechanics to TTK. These make you burn out faster. Competitive crucible is a boring game of sniper camping lanes. The game just doesn't have anywhere near the dopamine consistency (i.e. addictiveness) of other games that are available right now and there is no real content on the horizon until Destiny 2. Everything about this game is burnout repetition for poor or negligible chances at rewards. Bungie seems scared to let most players "finish" the game. Devs are using a playbook gauged entirely by sales and seem shocked by low metacritic scores, which affect their payday and are the only real thing motivating them to make the game better.

          • Destiny has strained the fun out of this game, they've turned greedy , with not much of an idea of what their players want except to listen to the army of nerf crying PvP babies who have ruined this game especially PvE. They really pissed me off when they took away year one weapons, I worked hard and long for them and they rubbished my efforts, they then charged me double for TTK DLC compared to other DLC's then introduced microtransactions and made already paid for content unplayable i.e. VoG, PoE when all they needed for them was an influx of new or revamped Y1 weapons. You say 'Poor PvP setup', now that is the understatement of 2015 and epitomises all that is wrong with Destiny, PvP their flagship game mode and the direction they want us to take is the most broken part of a broken game and they are proud of it, WAKE UP ~Bungie ~ fix that shit before you take another step because I'm not throwing anymore money at the screen !!!!! Oh and challenge mode raid, is so fcuking broken, not just in glitching, but in having to rely on other people to achieve anything, that's just so wrong, yeah thanks for that crap lottery. What is the point of wasting my time Bungie never replies or activly discusses, where are the customer polls before you introduce anything, you have a communtiy wish list that only a hand full of items have ever been introduced, not because we wanted them, but because you knew you sold a defective game in the first place and these were just rebalancing some of the areas that were limited at launch. !!! You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time !!!!

            • Bungie made this game only for 2 reasons. 1st. Grab what money they can. 2nd. To make everyone grind as much as they can make you grind until the next dls because the lack of content. Lack of rewords. Time gates. And they main thing to keep gamers grinding. 20 different light levels to each weapon and gear pice. As far as the games concept of what it should be like and what we have been given are majorly two different things. Bungie literally destroyed this games concept of where it could of gone. So in all, all you'll ever get or can really expect is a rinse and repeat.

            • You've grabbed a couple of things that really irked me as well. Waves of enemies with yellow bars as a substitute for raid mechanics. Sorry, tedious doesn't equal fun. No puzzle to solve. Nothing convoluted about it at all. Run and shoot in all directions until you die. *yawn* The other thing is the whole rotating meta thing. Early Destiny allowed me to completely ignore PvP, which I dislike. I could play to acquire great weapons that were recognizably better than their contemporaries, and were just good enough to fire those ol' endorphin producers in the brain. Now, because Bungie wants to force everyone to use everything, current weapons have practically meaningless variations in their killing power. It's like eating rice cakes - you won't die doing it, but it sure isn't fun. By taking raid-level primaries with elements out of the game, one of the major carrots that made grinding a somewhat unpleasant raid was removed from the game. Now fewer people are willing to go through with the time commitment and lack of fun to be not rewarded at the end. There are simply better ways to spend time. Now if you are into mindless and purposeless grinding of decidedly unfun game play design so that whatever you earn can be ripped away from you in a couple of months when Bungie yet again course corrects, this is your game. If not... you know what to do...

              • Really well said. So many of us reflect your sentiments, I can only offer that this game is dead without a shakeup at Bungie. As far as your weapons, I recently watched a Planet Destiny podcast with Sage Meril and John Wisnewskii. They are large part of "where the buck stops" in the nerfing of your weapons. Merrill is the lead, IMO is completely out of touch with the vast majority of casuals out there. Your frustration with weapon tuning is a joke to them that they laugh at and poke fun of many, many, times in the course of an hour. It was good for me to watch however, I had held out hope that for the PVE community our voice would gain traction as our numbers grew. That was a pipe dream. Merrill comes off like an old, wanna be hipster that is trying to hang with 10 awesome gamers from twitch or subreddit. They make no mention of their own forum or ANY mention of how their proposed future nerfs will affect PVE. It was good for me to watch because it exposed what PVE has become. A linear shooting gallery where you stop, fire 5 rounds into a target (most of which just stand their allowing you an easy headshot) and hide behind a rock and until your shield generates back then move to the next target. The only thing the shooting gallery is missing is the "ding" you hear at the carnival when they fall over. There should be a long string attached to our cork bullets that we can use to reload. They think you guys are a joke. It sux but it's true. Planet Destiny podcast with Sage and John Wisnewskii. Look it up and absorb the arrogance, let it fuel you to walk away and encourage of single gamer friend to NEVER purchase another game from these azzhats. Their disregard for your enjoyment is systemic all the way to the top. On my way to Gamestop to pickup Witcher 3. Project Red (small dev team that created Witcher 3) sounds incredible and invested into their community. They actually care what those who buy their game think. So unlike the hipster azzhats at BUNGLE that laugh at their customers. Supreme Butt Hurt.... I summon thee!

You only use legendary weapons? Damn you must not have a Black Spindle or a Sleeper Simulant then...They both easily outclass anything else in their respective weapon types.

                  • Bungie tries to balance weapons for PvP because a small number of players can dominate with them, and ends up screwing them up for the other 95% of us. They keep time to kill numbers for PvP and PvE, and thise numbers are more important to Bungie than the game actually being fun.

                    • All they need to do to make us feel godly is to let us upgrade our Y1 weapons and stop nerfing all the good perks for the PVP crucibabies. And bring back Y2 Gjallahorn in all its pre-nerf glory. For all those that whine about elitism in LFG, nerfing weapons was never going to solve this. There are still elitists in LFG, but they now require different weapons. The only answer is optional matchmaking for all modes. #Fixthegame, #Restorethefun, #OptionalMMforAll

                    • The reason you lack motivation is because there is no tangible reason to kill these enemies. They need to have story behind each encounter. Ever played elder scrolls or witcher? These games are perfect examples how to add story to each and every encounter. If they did this the grind wouldn't be so real.
