Common misconception: It is in fact, not possible.
For those of you that knew this already, congratulations, this world still has hope.
For those of you that think it is possible: you are - sadly - not alone.
Edit-1: Just looked at these responses. It seems that the most common explanation as to why you could terraform Jupiter happens to be: "space magic"
Touché Guardians, touché.
Edit-2: For those of you that are wise enough to know that the Gas Giants are not gaseous all the way through, that is awesome for you! There is no need to repeatedly tell me that, because I'm well aware of that. Still doesn't change my feelings on terraforming Jupiter or the like.
Edit-3: Wow, just checked the trending page of the forums and found this on there with 1.2K comments. Didn't realize that many people responded to this. That being said, I would like to thank the academy for this honor as well as all the internet trolls, wanna-be Neil deGrasse Tysons, and idiots. I couldn't have done it without you.
Edit-4: For those of you claiming that we could just solidify the gas, here's my explanation as to why you should all go think of better things to do than argue with my pretentious ass:
Take Jupiter for example: it is made of primarily molecular hydrogen and helium. If you used temperature to "un-sublime" or solidify the gas into a solid surface of sorts, you have to incorporate the melting temperature of the mostly hydrogen and helium atmosphere.
For starters, the temperature to solidly molecular hydrogen is around 14K.
If you didn't know, that's like negative 259 Celsius and is almost at absolute zero.
Helium is even lower at a whopping 1K
Account in melting point depression phenomenon of non-pure substances and we have a real issue… lol

5 RespuestasYou can have stations like the one in halo 2. But you cannot actually "Inhabit" a planet made up of gas
-
3 RespuestasLol let us fall through Jupiters atmosphere and find the core to be a vex world
-
I mean you could but that means you'd be screwing with a crap tone of shit that also seems pretty impossible outside of astronomical nature
-
all you really need to terraform a planet is some kind of primitive atmosphere and some type of solid ground and concidering in the game we can walk around on mercury without burning up i think the traveler can construct some kind of solid ground
-
1 RespuestaThere is enough pressure at the surface of Venus to make walking more like swimming, and enough heat to melt lead. I like how you draw your line at living on a gas giant and not at living way beyond our star's habitable zone.
-
Here's my arguement, this game is fiction, we shoot void (scientifically speaking Wtf is void?) Balls out of our fist. Can float, hover and jump on air, and fight beings that can survive in the vacuum of space. So yea, I'm cool with Jupiter being Tera formed, regardless of what science dictates.

2 RespuestasI've always thought it would be easier to solarform (is that a word or did I just pull that out of nowhere) a planet like Jupiter into a star. The gases and resources and gravity are decent conditions for a kind of protostar. Or I could just be talking nonsense. I can't remember.

1 RespuestaHow about this genius, the Traveler takes all the gas, sticks it in your ass, and then terraforms the planet with what is left.
-
U understand it's not possible. However, I also understand that it is a science fiction video game, and there is this giant sphere called the traveller floating around that can use these things called ghosts to bring people back from the dead. I also know that in this same video game our ships travel at faster than light speeds. There is also a race of sentient robots, that have aligned themselves to help defend the last human city. We have another robot race that seeks to systematically wipe out humans and all life using... wait for it... time travel. The list goes on. Long story short, if Bungie wants to say that somehow the Traveller made Gas Giants habitable... then let them.
-
I'm hoping that some has giant moons are accessible in the future, maybe we'll even get to see Pluto??
-
Gas giants cant be terraformed Little flying robots can revive beings from death People can breath without oxygen in the reef And tons of other stuff That's scientifically impossible by current standards. So why do people continue to discuss this subject and don't care about others

1 RespuestaJet fuel can't melt steel beams

1 RespuestaVideo game op...video game. 😧

The problem with humans: always think something is impossible until we see it. Then we rationalize it. Then we change our formulas and theories. Than we say the next thing is impossible. What we know about the earth: the atmosphere keep heat in and let it out. The atmosphere is held in place by gravity and the magnetic aura around the earth diverts most heat and radiation. Venus cab theoretically have the same thing. The traveller could have put a shield around the planet while it developed the gases it needs to repel the sun's heat. He could have increased the magnetic strength to divert more radiation and heat from the sun.
-
This makes sense from what we know now, but these are people that shoot energy from their hands, can fly, teleport, and more. Teleportation is also impossible based on current science, but we can in destiny
-
1 RespuestaBut space magic definitely exists... Right ?
-
1 RespuestaEditado por Vinegar: 10/12/2015 2:12:51 PM*sees a guy who actually knows what he's talking about and appears to have done his research, brings up space stuff that I talk to friends about all the time, brings up same points, sees replies, dies from laughter because of people who think they know what rheyre talking about*

1 RespuestaFor the argument on heat, venus would burn you and eat you, yet I can stand in it fine.
-
2 RespuestasYa know i thought people played games for FUN and to get away from the real world for a while. Now our games HAVE to coincide with the laws of physics and arguing about the reality of how planets work (gas giants in particular :) ) come on. Whhhhhhy its a game. Sci-fi. When its sci-fi no one is supposed to give a shit cause its FAKE. Lolz

1 RespuestaThere is land to them dumbass
-
1 RespuestaEditado por Lupinskey: 10/12/2015 3:41:30 PMYes, and somehow we can walk around on Venus and Mercury, because that makes sense right? I just have over half the sun in the sky while at the calories spires aka the lighthouse and I'm staring right at it upon landing without being blinded, instead I casually raise my hand to shade my eyes. I won't even go into the atmospheric issues with Venus, let alone the temperatures of both.
-
Editado por LukeDSwag: 10/12/2015 3:39:31 PMTraveler has insane power according to grimoire, I wouldn't put it past his capabilities to make the impossible possible. Edit: and the jovians do live on the outer planets so definitely a high chance life can exist on gas giants in destiny.
-
who thought you could in the first place? if you Terra formed a moon of a gas giant you'd get to have one hell of a sweet view.
-
2 RespuestasBetter to just artificially ignite Jupiter and terraform the moons
-
I don't know what you just said but I believe you because it sounds smart.
