I'm actually excited about the new changes. Bungie could completely make the game subscription based, but instead makes everything optional from your quests, bounties and soon micro transactions. This game is not a one time investment. Its poised to be expanded over ten years. Why does everyone act like they are surprised by this when they made it publicly known. All I can say is thank god its not like warframe where you have to spend $100s or more a month to keep progressing just to acquire weapons and equipment strong enough to rip adds. Those customers pay for games like that because they don't mind on showing support for a game they enjoy. I'd rather pay that one time price than a monthly subscription of $20+ to play a game like final fantasy. You're not being forced to do anything. If you aren't interested in spending extra money, then don't. Otherwise, folks like myself don't mind buying extra perks because we know it will go to helping on improving on the game in the future. I stopped playing Destiny November 2014, but the Taken King has so much to do and explore that I honestly did not mind on paying $40 for add on with my GameStop trade in. Stop looking to get everything for free. It's not how the world works. You'd think grown people would understand that. Thanks Bungie for all the new great S#|£!!!

  • Actually, Warframe does not require players to pay anything in order to keep progressing and acquire new weapons and gear. All updates, DLC and features are available to everyone, regardless of whether they chose to spend money or not. There are no paywalls, no locked out content or restricted game modes. Microtransactions in Warframe simply allow players to alleviate some of the grind, or add a few vanity items to their characters, and none of the content is held to ransom by they developers if people don't pony up some cash. However, the fact is that microtransactions in any game are there to make money. No game developer puts such a thing into their game because they don't want you to buy it. The big difference between Destiny and Warframe is that Destiny is a $60+ pay2play game, while Warframe is free2play.

  • While I havent tried Warframe, I know free2play games are rigged to have obscene grinds just to progress without the "optional" purchases. This is why many people hate them. And of course there's the occasional premium only gear that makes all who pony up into gods amoung scrubs. With a pay2play game like Destiny, selling anything but cosmetics will ruin the game. Its bullcrud. Plus, why do Bungie need more cash for the "live team" when Activision spent millions on them, earned it back REAL fast, and promised justvas much to continue? These things are not even necessary. They have all the money they need, and if the budget says otherwise, then someone is getting greedy. My bet is Craptivision is milking them like a cow.

  • Warframe is not pay-to-win. I would attempt to explain the mechanics, but there are people who have articulated it much better than I could, so I'll throw down one of their posts here:
Pay to win? no. that implies that those who fork out for platinum are always ahead of those who don't. completely false, as platinum merely subverts the Grind. those who pay still end up on the same level as those who don't. the better weapons and frames (Prime Versions) CAN be bought, but since it is rather expensive, most opt for the grind, which is really not that hard. I for one have never bought anything other than Slots and a few rare parts on trading with platinum, and I'm better off than some of the people I've seen put small fortunes in this game. if you don't want to invest money, but are willing to invest time, you still end up the same place as others. no one has a distinct advantage just because of platinum. let's say for example, I want to get a new weapon. I can either buy it with platinum, or I can use the in-game credits earned from missions to buy a blueprint and build it myself. If I buy with plat, I get the assembled weapon, but I still have to level it and upgrade it. if I choose to buy the blueprint, I have to find materials and craft it in the foundry. once it's built, I have exactly the same weapon Mr Moneybags with Platinum has; an unlevelled weapon that needs to be used so it can be upgraded. Mr Moneybags has his gun before I do, but we both still have to level the gun up, and you cannot buy levels. you can buy upgrades, but you still have to use the weapon first. best game ever? well, I wouldn't say that. it isn't perfect. there are glitches and bugs in it just like any other game. it has a few flawed mechanics, and it can be a bit overwhelming to the new player. but if you give it time, try to learn and understand what the game is about, you can then decide whether or not it is a game that's right for you. personally, I LOVE Warframe, but I'm not going to act like it's perfect, because it's not. TLDR answers: It's not pay to win. It's a fun game, with a few flaws here and there, IMO.
-Post by Steve the Bandit

  • Yes, I don't believe for a second that they need this additional revenue to fund the live team. If they do, then they are drastically mismanaging their revenue stream. This is not a small development house using microtransactions to get by and compete. All this will do is take a portion of the cosmetics we would normally get as part of our initial purchase price and put them behind a pay wall.

  • No, they are probably putting in time to make extra cosmetics, but still, they have no need for this and are gonna crap out new stuff because it has a high profit/cost ratio. A couple hours on the "drop a duece on the guy you killed" emote, equals thousands, if not millions, in revenue, since EVERYONE wants to buy it.

  • Grown people understand corporate greed, and are therefore wary of this new revenue stream and how Activision may seek to exploit it.

  • "Grown people?" Yeah, "grown people" really understand how a business intends to exploit their revenue.... Bungie and Activision literally exist to make as much profit as possible. They are not charities. They have, however, shown that they are committed to Destiny and improving the game. More revenue means more Destiny and that's a good thing.

  • Note I'm not saying they are being greedy - I'm saying that adults understand exactly what you've just stated: businesses exist to make profit. By that same token, we also understand that there are some corporations who will exploit their customers in order to maximize those profits. ICYMI: The "Grown People" bit was in reference to the OP's use of the term.

  • How can Bungie or Activision "exploit" customers? I don't think you know what that word means. You're just using it as a buzzword. Nobody buys games (or DLC for games) that they don't like... Besides that, this is the biggest and most successful game Bungie has ever created. If you think their goal is to "exploit customers" and -blam!- it all up, then you're ignorant. This isn't like Assassin's Creed or Call of Duty that gets released and forgot about each year. Bungie has proven their dedication to Destiny.

  • They cultivate and grow a dedicated customer base - one that feels invested in time and money, perhaps even attached to their characters. Once they're "hooked", they can start introducing additional ways to monetize that base, knowing that they will continue to pay because they are so invested. "In for a penny, in for a pound" as they say. The normal model is to then continue to push the boundaries, increasing your revenue until you've reached the limit of player investment vs profit - i.e. the point at which players finally say "enough is enough" and start to drop off. Then, as you pointed out, they pull back, and throw their customers a bone in the form of some rewards or making a part of the game easier to keep them hooked. So no, Activision's goal is not to exploit customers and $#@! it all up. As stated, their goal is to exploit customers WITHOUT $#@!ing it all up.

  • Nobody is going to play Destiny if they don't like it. Offering customers more of the game they enjoy is not exploitation. That's like saying the chocolate industry exploits customers because so many people like chocolate.

  • You missed the point. It's not a question of liking the game. Of course they like it, or they wouldn't be here. The appropriate question is: How much are people willing to pay before the price outweighs their like for the game? You like Destiny, because you're here and active, defending the developers even. Would you still play if it were $20 a month? $40? $100? $1000?

  • I absolutely understand the word "exploit". Just because you don't understand the concept of a person or business exploiting someone's emotional or financial attachment to a product doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I've explained it very clearly, you don't get it. That's on you. Go read a book. Me, I'm done, and you're muted.

"Wah wah I don't agree with you so mute because I refuse to accept reality" Coka Cola really exploits me when they raise their prices because I'm emotionally attached to their products. Movie tickets went up. I'm so being exploited because I HAVE to go to the movies - I can't live without going to the movies. Bungie is exploiting me because they have totally optional emotes for sale for an undetermined price.
