TL;DR
It's actually not that great.
The sandbox mechanics of Halo: CE were interesting to say the least.
The large open maps were fun to play around in, if not actually shoot each other.
The story had a beginning/middle/end, but wasn't anything too groundbreaking; at best it was original.
Gun play was decent.
Great original score.
Destiny has all of this. But the problem is that Halo is 15 years old. So, Destiny is basically outdated. The only thing they could really do was scale/new storyline and characters in a new universe. They got some right, and some way, way wrong. It's fun if you don't take it too seriously, because if you look at it up close with a microscope, its got tons of problems.

I don't think it works like that. Critic's scores don't really matter as much as you might want them to. Does anyone still play Halo 3? Probably not a lot. A ton of people bought the game and played it when it first came out, but it died off rather quickly. I don't know if Destiny is the same way or not, but Destiny has a "reason" even if it's shallow to play it everyday. Halo 3 didn't. It was just for funsies. That may be why it was such a good game. You could play it until you didn't want to anymore, and it was over. Destiny won't end, it can't end, and it wants you everyday of your life. It's Destiny! Comparing these two games isn't really fair. After all, Halo 3 had almost no progression of any kind. It had zero RPG elements. You simply can't compare this game to Halo in that respect. The best comparison is Borderlands, which never peaked my interest at all. Halo 3 could be compared to CoD maybe, but then again, a ton of people play CoD all the time. Halo 3 is just outdated, and was outdated when it came out. I hated the story as well. Halo CE had a decent story. Halo 2 and 3 had terrible stories, and this is because the original team was largely gone. Or because it was a sequel, and sequels always suck.
