In my opinion, the etheric light is the proper(and only) way to make extremely rare stuff. Instead of everyone needing the same unicorn guns and armor to win the game, we now need finite unicorn material to make any gun/armor of our preference relevant. If anything needs to be done, they should just reduce the amount of etheric light one can obtain in a week. Thus making people think twice before blowing that etheric light on things like "her right hand".
