When the world goes bad, people want to escape from it. That's when the entertainment business REALLY pick up. That's why movies were so popular during The Great Depression.
and also games are doing better than the others because a movie you watch once, maybe twice. however a game you can play thousands of times. basically more bang for your buck

 • They build an improved or modified engine to make adding details, objects, and effects easier so they can build bigger and better games faster and with more precision, consistency, and detail. For example, the new modified IW engine makes bullet impacts' rendering more efficient so they can put bullet impacts on the console with more detail. • And now that that's out of the way: Yes, most sequels are merely improvements of past game engines. However, it is the scale of the improvements that determine a game's originality. For example, Call of Duty games generally have very few changes from sequel to sequel, especially when it comes to gameplay. The Halo series, on the other hand, is known for having substantial changes from sequel to sequel despite reuse and iteration of the same engine throughout the series. Reach is a perfect example; Bungie quite literally rewrote the gametype-related parts of the engine from scratch, to make them scriptable and extensible. They also dramatically extended everything they could -- the GUI, the Firefight options, the armor, the server-side Matchmaking algorithms... The fact that engines are reused is irrelevant. Innovation and creativity are still well within the realm of possibility when developing a game with a reused game engine. [Edited on 05.29.2011 5:37 PM PDT]

 • Here, let me unrape the English language for the rest of us.
Posted by: Spartansrulz300 You people don't understand that game engines take a long time and a lot of money to create. Modern Warfare 3 is running on a improved version of the IW4 engine, while Halo: Reach is running on the improved version of the Halo 3 engine. Creating a new engine takes a very long time to produce and script. The best way to for game developers to please the gaming community is to vastly improve their games... You guys need to wake up. It's the recession; game developers don't have enough money to create entirely new engines from scratch for their upcoming sequels. End of story. Wait, I forgot to mention something. I'm a semi-literate third-grader incapable of properly formatting a sentence or otherwise seeming intelligent. Okay, now end of story.
• I don't think the recession is that big of a factor on whether developers update the engine or not. It's just less of a risk and more efficient to build upon an engine that the developers know work. It's kind of like deciding whether to buy a new car or not except you have to create this car and you don't even know if it will be better than your previous one. Infinity Ward and Treyarch definitely don't have a lot of time to create a new engine because Activision only gives them a 2 year deadline to make their games.

 •
Posted by: Flame Killa 2PC I understand that most of the Halos and other games use the same engine, but they usually take the time to make significant improvements. CoD has looked the same every year since 4 with very little improvements. Hell, Black Ops looked worse the MW2. And Why Are You Typing Like That?
Well Treyarch doesn't have the rights to IW4, they get a less updated version, so that explains Blops. MW1, 2, and 3 run on the same engine, just tweaks here and there.

 •
Posted by: Spartansrulz300 vastly Improve there Games to pleasure you people ......
Oh my. Reusing an engine on a console isn't that big a deal to me. The CoD4 engine might be four years old, but it's still by all accounts a very good one ( by console standards anyway). Given the limitations of current hardware, any new engine isn't likely to add much. Given the rate at which PC hardware advances, however, I think it's much more important that each game have a new engine. [Edited on 05.29.2011 5:22 PM PDT]

I like Reach, don't love it but like it. From what your saying graphics "vastly" improve a game. No it's nice having good graphics, but if the gameplay sucks then the game sucks.

 • no. it's because it makes a sequel feel like a sequel, instead of a spin-off game. (like Halo Wars) but if the engine gets overmilked (CoD, Half-Life etc) it starts to look crappy, so people want a new one to make the game look fresh instead of just a re-hash of the previous 3 games.

 • Game developers sell more during hard economic times. All entertainment sales (movies, games, sports events, plays, etc.) all go up during recessions. Guess people just need to get through the day sometimes.
