Where Does The Revenue Come From?

Where do you think 80% of the revenue comes from for D2? The guy I’m talking to thinks that 80% of the revenue comes from the top 5%. I think it comes from the other 95%. What do you think?

  • Neither, “whales” do. Players of any skill level that just buy everything. That is why they are investing into ever verse so heavily. Look at the prices in ever verse, one liberal spender can get bungie the revenue of 4 or 5 players just purchasing DLC.

What do you think?
Definitely casual solo players like me. I’ve been playing Destiny for a decade and I’m still waiting for a matchmaking option. Because Destiny has no matchmaking options I can’t play any Dungeons, any Raids, any Legendary Seasonal missions, and most Seasonal and Annual exotic missions. That said I have to purchase every DLC otherwise I have nothing to play. At all. So my only options to enjoy this game is to drop $20 every few months just so I can get something as trivial as some cosmetics. I don’t buy Event Tickets as the events don’t give anything but three cosmetics and it’s cheaper to just spend 6,000 bright dust on them. Still without matchmaking options for a solo player like me my only option is to just keep spending money on this Free 2 Play game or I have absolutely nothing to play when I get home from work. Players like me create a cash flow for Bungie. They know all they have to do is put on a “bundle” sale and I’ll buy it…..even though I can’t even play the content I just bought. Players like me create an endless flow of money for Bungie not a Player Count. And for specific context I did not purchase Lightfall at launch because it didn’t offer me, a solo casual player anything. I only bought Lightfall last week when it was on sale. I’m positive that’s why revenue was down for Lightfall. Because Lightfall was bad. And almost all new DLC expansions offer nothing to solo casual players I bet we don’t buy them at launch unless they are sure fire great experiences like Witch Queen or Forsaken. There’s just no point in purchasing Expansions when they release for casual players. Especially considering the strikes are automatically put in map rotation regardless if you own them or not.

    • Top 5% make sense. They dump the Most money in the game, they buy all the Synthweave to Unlock every Ornament, they But Every Set of armor for each character, all emotes. Pretty much anything Bungie makes they Buy. They also buy every item that they sell on their Store. 95% of the Community cant do that. Unless they enjoy going bankrupt on buy useless C###. So ya, 80% of the Revenue, id believe comes from top 5%. *Its like when the Whales of California left due to Stupid High Taxes, all them Taxes are now falling on Working Class People. The Top 5% or even 1% were paying..it was like 75-80% of the Taxes in California.* *Not a political Chat, its just an Example*

      • 95 people buying the new dlc to try out the game is worth far more than 5 that dedicate themselves to the game and buy all the dlc.

From players that enjoy the game. That’s where the revenue comes from. It’s pretty simple and that includes sweats, casuals and new lights. I’ve never seen a gaming community that overthinks a game and the company as much as D2 and Bungie. Play it if you enjoy it and if you don’t there’s some really good games that were released this year so try some of them out. I love D2 because of the gun play (unmatched), space magic and the lore but it’s a video game. A little perspective with some here would go a very long way.

        • This is just my opinion, but I would say that on a per person basis that the people you call “sweats” would spend the most. Then on a whole group basis I would say the group labeled “casuals” would spend the most. This would be the same type of division that you would find in most activities. For a game like Destiny both groups are needed. The 45% drop in revenue for Bungie would strongly indicate that they have lost the support of one of those groups. I am sure people from both groups have their opinion as to which is the most affected (has lost the most players). I will leave that discussion for someone else.

        • Anyone not in the building in Seattle likely has little to no idea how much of which group exists and what % of the revenue they account for. I'm guessing someone is trying to make the argument on a different post that they should make the game for who gives them the most money. Good luck trying to draw the line between those two groups and figure out who you're supposed to be listening to. Both groups, regardless of size or revenue, are vitally important and should be listened to.

          • It definitely comes from casuals who aren't new but aren't too experienced either, they're the ones who spend cash on the shop and the events; the top 1% don't even buy deluxe editions, let alone eververse stuff — some even split the cost of an expansion with 1 of their friends to share it (only works on Playstation)

              • I find this topic weird and why is it even a thing who cares where it's from. If people wanna spend money so be it. (I understand u made this because of someone else but what does it matter) Whales People see something they like in store Small part of the newcomers will go through with destiny. There's plenty of alt accounts that put money into the game again or maybe not idk this whole topic just confuses me :(

                • Anyone who thinks that the sweats dont make up for the majority of the revenue is wrong. Yes there are more casuals but casuals wont buy every season or the collectors edition of the dlcs and they wont spend a lot in eververse. Remember destiny is an MMO first and foremost which means it has whales and whales are the sweats and they spend a lot of money. Also remember the pareto principle. 80% comes from 20% this is taught in economics in the sense of 80% of revenue comes from 20% of consumers. That 20% in destiny are the sweats.

                  • The thing about casuals is that by definition they never play more than casually. They also have a far more transactional relationship to the game and if that's the majority of what's catered to them the game could become nothing but hamster wheel quid pro quo. Casual players do seem to also like and appreciate higher end or higher quality content so that's a good thing. It's just hard to say that people that only do something periodically are going to know as much about it as people that do it every day. A lot of this game's history in pvp has been using mega math to make it so casual players appear to be the foremost experts at times but if you only play like three matches a week it's possible that you might care about what you and people like you want more than what's good for the game. I wish I could say it was different for top tier players but at least they play the game enough to know more.

                  • The revenue comes from the whales who buy microtransactions.

                  • I mean, never count out the Whales… But I’m still inclined to believe the bigger casual base provides a more sustained source of revenue regarding D2. No stats to back me up of course, but the big spenders pour huge chunks in all at once, while us plebs spend little bits extremely frequently.

                  • I'd like to know how much, first of all. And I mean, how much does Destiny 2 actually make every year? And from that, how much from DLCs, how much from Season passes, how much from Eververse?

                    • Most games are financed by a rotating group of casuals. One of the reasons why the only time the population goes up is when new content drops. People wanna do their battle passes and bail. The hardcore players are usually the content creators who are marketing slaves to Bungie and contractors to Google. They keep the advertising going to get casuals in.

                    • Technically it comes from streamers free advertising and they seem to buy every single emote and item from the eververse. They also take things they say to help "balance" the game.

Why do you think COD and Fortnight print money Very few games not made by from software can make money by catering to the hardcore players that want to be challenged instead of just having fun That's why Bungie flip flops between SBMM and CBMM , pleasing the skilled players kills the mode, because the casuals opt out, then they throw the skilled players under the bus to get the casuals back, repeat

They pretty much said where it comes from. The Eververse. Has nothing to do with sweats or casuals. They said Lightfall sold well but afterwards, player retention fell off and they were forced to lay people off. Key word being player retention. They were counting on players to stick around and spend money after purchasing Lightfall and this didn't happen. That's Eververse money they weren't making. It doesn't matter whether it's sweats or casuals, you're looking for someone to blame, it's not the consumers, blame Bungie for not making content that people want to play. If the content is good, you will have both sweats and casuals sticking around to play. As a casual veteran who never got enough people to try most of the raids except a few, I have spent a bit of money on the Eververse, not much but a little bit if I see something I really want.

                          • Gonna say casuals because that's pretty much the case in every game. Sweats are always a relatively small portion of the community.

Casuals as player count by sheer mass would make majority of income I reckon but whale's an streamers close behind because we all know they waste hundreds if not thousands on the game hence why they'll have thousands of unspent bright dust on stream . Tbh if all casual players just quit for half a year d2 would be in a better spot right now and probably be more fun because the top 5% don't like playing each other in pvp or playing with eachother in raids game would be dead without casuals an bungies hand would be forced to bring the so called casuals back (when I say casual I mean good players that do gms ,master raids, master dungeons an master lost sectors but just don't play 24/7 an dont want to play destiny souls in endgame content because they have a life other than just a video game )
