hive kills isn't progressing the quest. But bungie patches necro drop from Raid right away

Were you using it in the Abyss encounter? That encounter is set up to not grant progress for any quest or catalyst, due to the nature of the infinitely spawning thrall.

Got no progress from hive kills in Crotas End or spire activity. Grasp of Avarice worked though...
