TL:DR at the bottom if you couldn't be bothered to read this.
Hey everyone, I realize this post isn't gonna win me any friends in this community but I'd just like to talk about something that has been bothering me with this whole Xim/Cronus debate and the stance by developers of banning people who use them, and a lot of people ignore when the discussion comes up.
Before I start I'd like to lay out my general stance
* XIM and Cronus is cheating
* I'm happy that developers are finding ways to get rid of them
* I'm NOT defending their use, merely explaining the reasoning why some people have used them and to offer a solution.
* If you continue to use XiM or Cronus in order to gain an advantage, you're an -blam!-.
I'm an ex-xim user. Before you hate me, let me explain. Back in D2's launch, I was on Xbox. Of course, I was playing a ton because I'm an addict but during the first month or so of the game's launch, my hands and wrists were getting worse and worse. Constant pain, and the only way to heal was to stop playing, which I didn't do, because again I'm an addict. So my hands were in braces for a month. Playing with controllers in FPS games straight up causes me pain, especially if I claw-grip, which is pretty necessary for fps games if you don't have back-pedals.
So I began to look for solutions, and what I found was the XiM apex. It was advertised to me as a way to use Keyboard and Mouse on console, and even a way to use other controllers on whatever console you want. Perfect! What I didn't realize until I bought it (at gamestop, by the way. It wasn't a shady black-market deal like cheat software is) is that it TRICKS your console into thinking your KBM is a controller. You manually bind things using a mobile app. Mine didn't have any recoil reduction or aimbot or anything, I didn't even know that was a thing.
Apon using it I realized that I was still getting HEAVY aim assist. Needless to say, the accuracy of a mouse combined with heavy bullet magnetism and reticle stickiness is an easy way to absolutely DESTROY lobbies. It's an unfair advantage. One that I DIDN'T WANT. I just didn't want to be in pain.
But I also didn't want to stop playing either, so I opted to completely avoid any form of PVP while using it. I'd still be getting the aim assist advantage, but not using that to win against other players. It was a decent compromise, but obviously avoiding a huge part of the game kinda sucks. I didn't actually need to do this, since these devices weren't actually banned in any game back then (and also weren't as advanced, my XiM didn't have any cheats on it) but I did it anyway because I realized it was an unfair advantage.
Eventually, I was able to build a PC during shadowkeep, but that was a loong time to be stuck on consoles for. Once I could make that jump, the XiM went straight into the garbage. But not everyone can afford a PC, so there are some that are still stuck in that situation. PCs are expensive, and the price to performance ratio for modern consoles is higher than it has EVER been. Currently, it's IMPOSSIBLE to build a PC that can play games as well as a Series S for the same price. Series S consoles range from $250-$300, and building a PC with the same performance would be $700 MINIMUM currently. Building a PC just isn't an option for many console users..
Consoles support mouse and keyboard natively now. This isn't like the early xbox one/ps4 era where games have to manually program in support, now it's the other way around if they are cross-platform. As a developer it's a conscious choice to BLOCK their usage. It's more work to disable them than it is to allow them to be used. Back then, when consoles were a closed space, it made sense to not allow it! Console players like to avoid playing against PC players if they can help it.
But we live in an age were almost every major multiplayer game has cross-play, and many also have cross-progression! In cases like this they often split PC lobbies and console lobbies already unless a console user is in a fireteam with a PC user. There is NO reason as to why Destiny, or any other shooter, should block the usage of KBM officially. Not talking XiM, I mean actually just plugging your Keyboard and Mouse into the console.
Some say that they'd hate this because it would be unbalanced. But remember. PC and Console lobbies are ALREADY SPLIT. The solution is RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. Allow for Console users to use KBM. When using KBM, they are put into PC lobbies just like they would be if they were partied up with a PC user. When they queue up for a PVP or Gambit match, they are LOCKED to the control style they queued up with until they exit matchmaking. So if they queued with a controller, they're put into console lobbies and their mouse and keyboard stops working. If they queue with a mouse and keyboard, they're thrown into PC lobbies and their controller stops working.
Blanket banning all Xim users regardless if they are using them to intentionally cheat or not will make it so some genuine players won't be able to play anymore. Most of us would have never touched Xim if games had better accessibility options. Bungie has even acknowledged in their blogpost that using keyboard/mouse adapters is an accessibility option, but even ones that don't have any cheat software built in still inherently give you the advantage of aim assist So even if they can be used for accessibility, they will also be abused by people who want that advantage, and there's no way to fully separate the two. That's just how it is. The only solution is to ban all of them, but allow for direct-input KBM support.
TL;DR: Xim and Cronus is cheating, but some used Xim (or other KBM adapters) for accessibility and didn't actually want the advantage of aim assist, and didn't use any of the cheats like recoil reduction or aimbot. If KBM was officially supported, many wouldn't use these products, and anyone who's left would be real cheaters who are ONLY using them to cheat. Destiny needs official KBM support on consoles, and any console players who use KBM should be put into PC lobbies. It's the perfect solution.

You honestly lost me once you said you were a xim user.

Mmmm no. You shouldn’t be playing KBM on console

2 RepliesAnyone using keyboard and mouse on console in PvP specifically should be banned IMO. Accessibility doesn’t even matter if the only way to let people play is to give them a massive advantage

Edited by DHawk12: 4/14/2023 11:46:37 PMIf you want to use m&k then play on pc or ask for native support on console (obviously input based mm should come with it). If you are disabled then use the xbox adaptive controller or the upcoming accessibility controller by sony. Even when a console game has m&k support, m&k players still choose to use “adaptors” to dupe input in order to bypass the matchmaking (if input based mm exists) and take advantage of the controller tier aim assist (bullet magnetism as well in D2).

There are very few accessibility tools that can’t also be used for cheating by people who don’t need them.

I’m gonna be that guy but I heard someone went legend in comp with just one arm or something? Might’ve been false information idfk.
