Many veteran players will not be aware of this unless they’ve made a new character recently.
The new light experience sees you land in the cosmodrome as it did before however now your light abilities are locked behind “meditation” missions that see you run through an underground area that requires you to shoot random rocks blocking hallways to progress while sitting in puddles of light to progress.
The area is laden with non-sensical hive spinner traps that are completely out of place and that clip entirely through the walls as they move.
There is zero dialog from Ghost or Shaw Han. There’s no story for any of this and the mission design doesn’t even make sense. There is nothing at all explaining what you’re doing or why you’re doing it. How the hell is shooting rocks and some hive “meditating”?
This is a shameful experience. If I were a new player I’d quit the game after seeing something so cheap and poorly designed. (Yes I said cheap. Not unfair cheap I mean budget cheap. This is lower quality than a tech demo). Whos idea was it to change the new light experience to what ever the hell garbage this is?
Once upon a time we went into the dark forest to reclaim our powers and we’re told about our subclsss in a fully voiced quest. Now we shoot rocks????
Bungie is a multi billion dollar company and the new player experience plays worse than a tech demo from an indie company. It’s been butchered and cobbled together so many times there’s all these different pieces of different iterations and it’s completely disjointed.
I would literally be ashamed to have this in my portfolio

Sorry to hear that. Being here since the beta days, I've gotten to experience the same original intro from way back then. We'll never get it back again, but they could've preserved the dialogue at least you all. Just seems like they need sometime for a decent refreseher on a lot of the current material to help flesh out the feel of destiny.

Edited by OkamiToge: 3/14/2023 1:06:19 AMI actually experienced this earlier on an alt account messing around, and I couldn't understand wtf is all of this random crap 😂 I feel extremely bad for new players, bungie should STOP VAULTING CONTENT and being lazy, the starting quest was some of the most nonsensical crap I've ever played in the game. I have no idea what new players have to be thinking, except it's no wonder if bungie can't retain a lot of new players if that's what they get explaining things. Edit: If lightfall was a lot of people's first time playing destiny 2 on steam I can understand most of the mostly negative reviews, bungie are ruining their own game gutting it.

They could also just brought back the first few destiny 1 missions when you're newly risen, and wrote some kind of a twist to make it fit into the state of the world in destiny 2, that to me would be cool.
-
They should bring back Red War and Forsaken campaigns. Those would be a good new player experience
-
Edited by Joker_Karasu: 3/14/2023 8:55:32 PMWhat they should do is just put the story missions they removed back in the game as selectable from the director. It should include everything from the red war to the various expansions and forsaken. It shouldn’t tax the game to put just those missions back in.

2 RepliesI miss the old way of getting subclasses. It was a lot more fun.

Edited by ThePunkPanther: 3/14/2023 3:26:56 AMI like the Destiny 1 beginning but the way they changed it is just awful. The tutorial is incomplete and it doesn't explain anything at the current situation with the Darkness. After the quest with Shaw Han, new lights just spawn in the Tower and they have no idea what's going on. Fun fact: the cutscene when you arrive at the tower, you can see the Traveller but once you spawn it's gone lol. Also, Bungie needs to stop forcing new players to start the first mission of the newest expansion when they haven't complete the past ones. It doesn't make any more sense to them. If I could change the new light experience myself, I would keep the same beginning of D1 and keep Shaw Han quest but make it shorter and with full tutorial. At the Tower, you get a cutscene with Zavalla and Ikora that tell your guardian about the Darkness (similar cutscene like the one in D1 with the Speaker) and about what happened since D2 launch. They ask you to the Moon to meet Iris Morn to investigate on the pyramid. This start Shadowkeep campaign. Once you complete it, it automatically starts the Beyond Light campaign, then the Witch Queen and finally Lightfall.

1 ReplyIts a definite step up from literally nothing, which is where it was at before.

Although it’s awful at least it’s…something? I remade my hunter a while back and all I did was run like 2 missions and a strike and the game threw me into orbit saying “alright go play” with little to no leads on what to do next. And I wouldn’t have truly known if I hadn’t already been playing this game for almost 10 years now. The red war was a wayyyyy better new light experience. The campaign just had better pacing and could’ve provided a good early game challenge if offered on legendary to bump yourself to an early game power lead.
-
There's content for new lights? I thought as soon as you start they throw you into a shopping mall basically.

3 RepliesEdited by Davie4: 3/14/2023 5:17:03 AMA joke implies substance. New light is just a sad quest that blocks progress into game. Bungie should accept they made d1 and it had a terrible story then they made d2 and deleted starting story. New lights should just be tossed into whatever oldest expansion in game is and call that the story and move on. Why they even wasted resources trying to make sense of what they broke I don’t know.
-
4 RepliesIts been like this for years .... Also most games that have the same genre have terrible new player experiences Its not a bungie issue but the fact its not really worth that much to put many effort time and resource to something your current player won't do/know about Its just like that
-
This is how they removed Cayde from the game too. It’s saddening. They gonna the same with Zavala. “New Light Vanguard Mission *Devils Lair
-
6 RepliesAt the very least, the old one was interesting and got you into the story. It's a shame they vaulted so much content. (I get why they did). But, in doing so, it's really taken away much of the interesting hook of the game.

Edited by FluffyBunnyFeet: 3/13/2023 6:06:25 PMLove this game, been playing for years (d1d1 durrr durr durr..). I still play pretty much every day. That said, I will never recommend this game to new players. The new light experience is a joke, half the story isn't there, and to play the rest of the story puts a serious crunch on your wallet. It's not worth it for new players imo.
-
Yep. New Light experience is definetely bad under every point of view. Bungie put zero effort at all into it.
-
Plus the new light stuff it's not designed to make players surprise it's just designed to give players an introduction into destiny for newer players... Older players did new light because supposedly new light was going to be part of the earlier levels of the guardian rings if you look at like level two three or four there's is a spot for new light. Even before lightfall came out people from bungee mentioned how it was very important to complete the new light stuff as prep
-
You do realize everybody has access to new light right you don't have to make a new character to get new light everybody has the quest regardless if they're using an old character...
-
4 RepliesI may have to delete my Titan again and start fresh, just to see how ridiculous this has become. Honestly, why did they spend development hours changing something that was not broken? Yes, it was a tad disjointed after the removal of the entire base game (Red War) but at least it was mostly the same as the original. Bungie, wtf are you doing out there?
-
1 Reply
Once upon a time we went into the dark forest to reclaim our powers and we’re told about our subclsss in a fully voiced quest.
If there was anything from the Red War Bungie should bring back, this is it. It was a really cool re-introduction to out light subclasses. Except they might need to rewrite and re-record Cayde’s lines for the Hunters. Using either Shaw or Crow.
-
2 RepliesCan you post a video?
-
You have given me an idea, I’ll try it on my daughters account.
-
I was actually thinking about deleting one of my characters to have a fresh experience like I did in D1. But thankfully I didn't
-
New light experience has always been trash since day one. Bungie knows it, and so do new light players that’s just 5 minutes into the game lol
-
I have a mule account just for this point your making. Feeling out the new light experience. Playing the game without my mods. my stats. My god rolls. And just in that sense destiny is in some ways fun. And in others frustrating. Pvp is laughable but then again I'm on PS4 pro and doing this experiment while we are dealing with twilight vampires in the pvp sandbox. So once they fix the invisible problem. I'ma see how it plays out again

Agreed. If they are this invested in making the game more streamlined and casual “esk”, the rank system from warframe is a good start. The journey tab does actually guide you through what your objectives should be at the start, but nothing that explains and lays out what destiny is, and what makes it unique. Unfortunately this game is in the same spot as warframe for new players, where most of the game is too confusing, and unless you invest in watching a multitude of videos, or have a veteran there to guide you through all your questions, it’s just a clustering of info and content.
