I'm gonna stick my neck out for my friend here. They've been playing Destiny 2 for YEARS at this point and they just built a new PC to get into streaming as a vTuber.
Today, they were banned.
So, naturally being the overly curious game reviewer/journalist that I am, small though I may be. I have to inquire as to how the Battle-Eye / Detection software works for "account sharing."
Now, for those who do not know, this has been an issue before in other games such as Overwatch, where the players were banned based on Hardware ID (Miller & Miller, 2020). The hardware ID is summarized here, the type of system identifier based on all pieces of equipment within your computer (Microsoft Learn, 2022).
Bungie flags for "account sharing" how do they do that? Are they tracking the IP which might change with a VPN? Are they tracking with a Hardware ID? Which could change when you get a new computer?
Are they tracking with both?
Well, they are! So, naturally, there is room for some SERIOUS doubt because BattleEye tracks Hardware I.D. Changes AND I.P. Changes (BattlEye – the Anti-Cheat Gold Standard » Privacy Policy, n.d.). This means that A LOT of players who are upgrading their computers can potentially be banned after updating and upgrading their computers as my friend has.
The types of personal data being collected and processed:
BattlEye may collect and process the following information from you:
IP address
Game identifiers (e.g. in-game name, account ID, etc.)
Hardware device information and identifiers (e.g. serial numbers)
Information about the running operating system
Information about game-related and operating-system-related files and memory
Information about running processes, drivers, and other executable code
File names included in other information listed here, which might also contain your operating system user name
TLDR; I KNOW my friend was wrongfully banned and I'm willing to risk my reputation to stand up for them. If; they were banned for a legitimate reason, I totally get that and they deserve it. But, considering they just released a ban wave for "account sharing" (Destiny 2 Team, 2023) which is based on Battle-Eye's own Privacy Policy, and Bungie's lack of disclosure of HOW they decide to ban people for "account sharing." There is sizable room for doubt.
Edit: Because people in the comments section believe that Bungie can do no wrong when it comes to banning players and that they blindly believe that everyone who gets banned was rightfully banned please see (Carvalho, 2022).
Their player name is Riax Irosa#9351

Edited by Deadshield: 7/15/2023 4:46:27 PMHello, same thing happened to me as well but many people here on the forums are hostile and harass people that have been falsely banned. Bungie Falsely bans often and only unban a certain number of people or those make the most noise. Hang in there!

Don't listen to all the -blam!- sucking bungies di.. Clearly they don't understand that this is a load and they are wrongfully banning people all the time and getting away with it. Attention needs to be brought to that fact. I play on playstation and I got banned sometime last week for absolutely nothing with no explanation and it is infuriating. Yes, I am going through the appeal process which probably goes nowhere but, it is all I can do since their support is garbage. I hope all gets sorted out and all these people who have nothing helpful to say just move along. Stay strong Guardian

1 ReplyI had purchased the light fall expansion. After feeling disappointed in it i stop playing for a week or so. I decided to get on and finish the campaign and give it another shot. I went to log in only to find I was l some how banned with no explanation of why. I have played the game for 7 years, dropped probably around a thousand dollars on expansions and season passes ,including the 100 dollar versions of light fall. I have put over 2000 hours in d1 and close to 2000 in d2. It really feels like a slap in the face to be banned permanently with no explanation after supporting bungie through the good and bad times of destiny . It also feels like a bad move to ban destiny's most loyal players at a time when destiny needs them the most. I have never used any 3rd party software or cheats so this has to be a mistake. but there is no way to even contact bungie out side of their automated appeal process which doesn't even seem like it's reviewed by a real person.

I've been looking at the Trials report everyone said he "got banned for getting a carry," but that answer doesn't make sense. Because the people he played those matches with aren't banned... One has been Flawless 141 different times, and the other 37 times, hell one streamed when Lightfall came out, so that theory doesn't hold water.

I understand there is a strong sense of loyalty in these forums. It’s great to see player support their gaming companies and look out for each other in the community. It can also be a bit concerning when the same community is quick to “throw a stone” on their fellow guardians in need. Is the banning system 100 percent accurate? Of course not. Is there a chance of false positives to occur? Of course. I support your struggles OP as I am in the same boat. My brother was also banned in the most recent wave. He uses his work laptop to play D2 after work but he is required to travel around quite a lot so his locations are always different when playing. When he revived the ban, he was unsure of the reason so he thought it was because of a lfg he played with in discord from last year that may have cheated considering how well that teammate was playing. Random carries happen ALL the time during trials so I highly doubt that was the reason but after seeing the tweet about recoveries and boosts, it made me come to the conclusion Bungie thought he was boosting. My brother has a full time job and family and works very hard but also manages to make time to play with me and our friends. This game was a venue for us to get together on the weekends to relax and play. Out of everyone in the group, he was the most dedicated to playing this game. He Sherpa’s us and random people on several occasion for raids and always made sure it was a friendly environment. He even gifted me lightfall. I posted a ban overturn on his behalf. All I ask is for a diligent and careful review of his case. His player name is Silver Fox™#2070. OP, good luck in your struggles and I hope the outcome work out for you and your guardian friend.

1 ReplySorry all still new here. I am confused as to what the problem is. What is the difference of someone like GernaderJake, iFrostbolt, etc raffling/auctioning carries based on their twitch currency where a player may need to utilize a VPN and are paying for a service (Time is Capital). Or Someone paying to have the same thing? There are folks on YT that do the same for "Tips" Is it that someone was paid or someone played on a different device?

They used a Carry Service at Some point 💀

2 RepliesYou went to all that trouble, did all that research, then posted it in the wrong forum. 😄 Change the tag to ‘Destiny 2’ if you want to spread awareness of a potential problem with D2 accounts, or ‘Help’ if you want info on how your friend can appeal (I think there’s an online form they can fill in, but I’m not sure).

3 RepliesI don't know about your friend but here is an interesting one from me. Back in 2016/17 me and my friends used to travel with our xbox on business trips as all night in hotels was good levellin up time. Post D2, my friend moved to stadia then a proper gaming laptop. We are all travelling constants so spend a lot of time in client based cities. Anyway, last I checked with him he got banned just before lock down and gave up and moved on from the game. I told him that he must have hit some logic. He was branded a cheater for playing a game he loved.

Good. They deserve the ban. Serves em right for trying to cheat.

1 ReplyOh wow… NOT YOUR REPUTATION hahaha
-
5 RepliesHey sport. Tough luck. Your “friend” needs to use the appeal process. Throwing a temper tantrum in these forums does nothing. Literally NOTHING! Gotta add that your vigorous defensive responses lead me to; it’s either your alternate account or your main account.
-
3 RepliesBungie has always overturned every wrongful ban and it’s usually been an automated ban and upon human verification is reversed (or not). Your friend should appeal but if it’s upheld then they have just been caught as a cheater.
-
9 RepliesSounds like your friend paid for a recovery
-
FYI cheaters get banned, and people who get boosted by them and dont do anything about it also get banned
-
8 RepliesYour reputation 😂 buddy, no one knows who you are
-
21 RepliesYour friend was boosting. Get over it.
-
18 RepliesTell your friend not to cheat next time and they won't be banned. Cheater deserved it <3
-
2 RepliesGreat job banning this Booster, Bungie.
-
1 ReplyBungie announced yesterday that they were doing a wave of bans on account recovs...
-
5 RepliesEdited by Maxwell: 3/11/2023 6:38:18 AMA quick look at your buddy's most recent 7 games in trials is a giant red flag; albeit, those games were quite some time ago. It appears that he paid for a trials account recov. Could be wrong, but he's a .6 who won 7 straight games whilst dropping over a 2.0 in 4 of them, and going positive in all of them. I've done countless trials help runs, and that just doesn't happen for someone at that level.

5 RepliesI stopped reading at "vtuber".

Vtubers getting banned is a good thing.
