A theory about The Veil, it’s origin, purpose and why the Ishtar Collective is the most important group in the Destiny universe. (HEAVY SPOILERS

First. Here’s a short summary about what we know about the Ishtar collective, a golden age research group from Destinypedia: Ishtar Collective - Destinypedia, the Destiny wiki First, I’m going to hone in on the point the summary covers: “After much debate, they (The Ishtar Collective) concluded that the only way to save themselves from the simulation was to bring in something the Vex could not simulate.” What can we add to this to maybe get an idea of what they might have made/simulated if anything at all? Well, we know for a fact that the Vex are NOT a paracausal entity, which is precisely why guardians have had success against them in the Vault of Glass, an area that exists outside of time itself that can delete any casual force from existence. Our ability to wield the light was what made us impossible to perfectly simulate and therefore able to withstand the power of the Vex. This implies that the goal of the Ishtar collective (whether they were successful or not) would have eventually led them to a paracausal object or simulation of some kind. The end of the lore summary states that after 40 years of seemingly zero progress, a mind-forking system (based on vex network technology)was developed by Dr. Sundaresh. Why mention this? Why is this relevant to the Ishtar collective’s objective? Enter Neomuna. We are not given much information on the Veil directly, but we learn a few things through dialogue with the cloudstriders. Important points that we learn: ⁃ The Cloudark, Neomuna’s cloud network, was able to transport or *(fork) the consciousness of Neomunians out of their bodies and into a “network”. It is also mentioned the Veil is ESSENTIAL for the operation of this cloudark. Well that’s interesting isn’t it? The Veil, a paracausal object (mentioned by our ghost as sharing a similarity to the traveller in some way) is used to fork the minds of Neomunians, a population that has historically had significant struggles against the Vex in order protect them. What else do we know? In the final mission of Lightfall, we find the Veil. It’s found deep underground with what looks like golden age research computers, staff living quarters and lab stations surrounding it. Almost like it was being studied or worked on in some capacity. Again. Interesting… Back to the Vex. If humanity had learned that paracausal forces were it’s “salvation” (wink wink) against the Vex, then a natural response by the Vex would be to match or replicate this power as best they can. Enter the Black Heart. It is confirmed in the post-Lightfall campaign from Osiris that the Black Heart was a “failed copy” of the Veil. The Sol Divisive (a branch of vex that worshiped it) can be seen around it within the Black Garden in Destiny 1. It is not a stretch to assume that in this “paracausal space race” between the Ishtar Collective and the Vex, the black garden was made to try and “simulate” the Veil. A HUMAN, ISHTAR COLLECTIVE CREATION. Notice how the Veil seemed to have egregore around it in the bunker? Remember how in Beyond Light’s seasons, Egregore was known for linking the minds of the Scorn through the Crown of Sorrow, an object of extreme interest to the Witness. During the end of the golden age and the subsequent collapse, the Ishtar Collective used paracausal forces (light and dark) to start a new society on Neptune that underwent its own golden age. One at first , free from the eternal battle between the inhabitants of earth and alien forces and eventually and most importantly, from the Vex through the development of the Veil. The Cloudstriders even mention that they “branched” off of humanity in an effort to avoid the fallout of the collapse. Why does the Witness want it? The Veil can fork the minds of beings using paracausal energy and it’s creation (based on the framework of Ishtar Collective knowledge gained from learning about Vex Time networks also allows time travel.) Remember: “The Ishtar Collective were able to rescue 227 undamaged copies of themselves from inside the Vex, and all copies voted to become explorers in the Vex information network” Therefore, The Veil is the Witnesses chance to remove its consciousness from its own body and enter a period of time in the past where it can destroy the traveller, likely at the point of “time” when the traveller was being born/formed in the universe.

  • Nah, their reveal of the heart completely retconned what had existed in destiny lore up until this point.

Part of me wants the big reveal to be that D2 as a whole was a simulation and the Witness just broke out of the simulation in Lightfall. It would let us reconnect with Cayde from the past and have us be outcasted by the vanguard for having the darkness. Personally, I loved Destiny 1 and would love to see it come back in some shape or way that continues to preserve it. Or the prime world could be more like the original concept art and trailers. Making the "prime" world different. That and it would be cool to hop into an alternate simulation once light and darkness is done.

  • Definitely not why the Witness wants it. It could just Destroy the Traveler now. It's already destroyed every civilization the Traveler touched anyway so it's legacy and everything it uplifted wouldn't matter. It's not like The Traveler created life itself. The Witness made its intentions clear. It wants to end life, AND death and by extension, pain. The Witness hinted that it knew pain. This line with its name makes me think it was once a species or pattern in the original garden before existence and was changed by the Winnower and Gardener causing the big bang, spontaneously causing it to come into existence in a cruel universe of predator and prey where it would watch everything die while it couldn't. The Witness went to some kind of primordial realm through what is a portal born from light and darkness. The Final Shape is what comes from both light and darkness which can be a complex thing or nothingness. It's up to whoever wields both to decide.

Destinypedia is flawed. Especially summaries. You’re reading someone’s opinion. I always try to use direct citations. Just so you can avoid being misled by others headcannon. That disclaimer aside, let’s look at your idea. Namely, the Veil is described in the Cloud Strider lorebook as being a dimensional gateway. The Black Heart for starters, this is a hefty retcon, prior it was an artifact left behind to test us. If humanity could overcome it, then the forces of the Light were not finished off and the Darkness had to come back for it. The Vex do not time travel. They can travel to and from the alternate timelines that branch off of ours. Time in Destiny was explained in Unveiling. Each Universe has one primary timeline, there are an infinite amount of branches that sprout from it and themselves. A infinite web of ‘what-if’s. That’s why they don’t have much of any impact on ours. The Ishtar Collective used the Warmind to trip up the Vex simulation. Believing it too advanced for them to simulate. They mentioned the mind forking back then because that technology was later salvaged post Collapse and became the foundation for the Future War Cult. As that is the device they used to see potential futures. There are only two/three entities traveling back in time. Elsie Bray and the Traveler, which means the Gardner and likely the Winnower. As it’s the Traveler that is sending Elsie back. Seems like they are taking those old threads and reworking them into the current narrative. Wouldn’t think too hard on it. Retcons have to be laid out and explained. The only sleuthing to do is find what things were changed.

But we know the Veil wasn’t made by humanity as it’s a paracausal entity of darkness which no one besides Clovis Bray with clarity had access to prior to the collapse and which Savathun was the one who moved it to Neptune in the first place and we know that the reason why the black heart was created wasn’t to go against the Neptunians but to rather make another Veil in order to appease the Witness as the post campaign exotic mission now shows us that the sol divisive were worshipping the darkness long before the black hearts creation.

      • I think its simple. The veil is just that. Its the veil between life and death. Physical and metaphysical. Light and dark. I think the traveler and the veil are similar because the traveler is stealing the souls of sol. Its a parasite. It mimics the veil. By connecting them “the veil and the traveler” it allowed the trapped souls to join the river of souls. Which is why the traveler is “lightless”. The river is the original garden. And we are the harvester of souls for the traveler. As we become stronger the traveler was able to heal…. We were feeding it souls.
