Clan Recruitment - Destiny 2

Discord requirement for a Destiny Clan is dumb

I get that you are trying to establish a larger community, but making Discord a requirement to join your clan is uselessly gatekeeping. I honestly struggle to find time to get enough Destiny in between having a career, a relationship and multiple hobbies. When I'm on, I'm happy to join in any clan activities, but saying that I need to post in a separate Discord is absurd. I don't want your memes. I'm old. I just want to do some of the actives not geared towards solo players Edit: text below Really what it comes down to is seeing clans say that they would kick you for inactivity in Discord (not Destiny, which that I get ) is what rubbed me the wrong way and prompted my initial post. Thank you to those acting like adults and showed me some of the other uses and reasons for clans having some sort of Discord use policies. For the one childish response, thanks for showing me your clans attitude, I'll be sure to stay far away.

  • I've seen some ridiculous requirements for clans. Discord being a pretty reasonable, if not the most reasonable for anybody who wishes to make a close knit community. Especially with Crossplay. PC and Xbox cant join PSN Parties, PSN cant join Xbox chats either.. With Discord coming to PlayStation, it is the most obvious to have everybody connected. Of course.. main point of discord for clans is to organise activities so members can run stuff. The extras like memes, etc, is just there to let members chill. One thing I do think should be a thing on a bigger scale, is clans to let members have free range. If they don't wanna be part of the casual, non d2 content within the servers then they can choose. There are some who demand active participation within the discord, can understand why you may dislike that. But just the general notion so that you can actually participate with the clan you joined for activities, yeah thats reasonable.

  • right there with you mate. psn party chat is fine and psn has a friends feature that works just fine. if i have to be on some external app to raid ill stick to the other parts of the game or find a clan that understands that psn is fine.

  • So you want to do the activities that require being a part of a group, but you don't want to be a part of the group? Mate, requiring a certain way to communicate isn't gatekeeping, its standard issue. Whether it be requiring a mic, Ventrilo, Teamspeak, Discord... these are all things we've had over the years as expectations of community. No one is trying to keep you out. Having a job and a family aren't anything exclusive to you, the other overwhelming majority also have the same, and it certainly doesn't prevent you from spending 3 minutes downloading an app and making an account.

    • I've seen clans have some stupid requirements but Discord is not a stupid requirement and calling a free app that allows for clear communication and organization of events "gatekeeping" is beyond hilarious

      • I completely understand your frustration. Discord is a very valuable tool that helps teams organize and communication during activities. Any Clan that doesn't use a form of voice server is hurting itself. However, I think what NullD is talking about are the Clans that will remove members because they have active Destiny 2 time, but little to no time in the voice server. I have been in Clans that require you to be in a voice channel anytime you are in game and activity doesn't count unless you are actually talking to another Clan member during your play time.

Discord is a tool to help grow the community, expand your knowledge, share thoughts/ideas, and grow as a team. Charlemagne is a great resource and discord also has bots that can link YouTube videos in a specific channel where members can go to collect resources and knowledge. You can’t do this on the bungie app. Maybe you’ve never experienced a well designed/ran discord? The bungie app is not a “tool”. I understand your frustration, but ultimately it’s what you want to get out of your game experience, correct?

            • well some might argue, whining over a social game requiring social platform on a social forum , is well... kinda du.......well .. ahem.. anyhoo. perhaps if socializing platform is something you want to avoid maybe not join a social clan? you can always form your own anti social clan or play solo with zero chat or communication. Just dont expect carry for raids or trials without communication then go whine again in forum like some out there complain they need a clan for those activities.

              • I tend to agree ... we are old in my group, average agev40+ ... we don't really team up that often. Its just a place where we don't have to worry about being kicked, but can see when each other are on. The discord channel we do have is for sharing memes, like you stated ... and occasional friendly banter. I honestly don't think we would invite anyone to it ... its not for the thin skinned ...

              • Most clans use discord as a social space. it’s a great place to break down anxieties about meeting new people. Introducing yourselves via text is always easier. & bonds are formed before you are even introduced in game. At least that’s the discord servers I have interact with. Think of it more of these clans are looking to form friendships. And to facilitate these friendships grouping up. To most destiny is a hobby. Most hobbies have a social aspect to them.

              • I think it depends how the clan uses the discord for sure. Having a place to schedule raids and see that easily is so important for raiding clans. The Bungie app is...not reliable for any type of communication. Plus guides, maps, trouble shooting, dismantle/keep questions, etc are all much easier via discord. Many clans require discord because they are trying to build a community of players, not just a collective of them. If that makes sense. Pros and cons to everything though. At the end of the day though, I hope you find what works best for you.

You'll get a message then the notification 2 hours later. What use is that?

                • And activities geared towards teams requires communication and coordination, which is why they use Discord.
