A Suggestion For Future Community Challenges

So, first of all, let's get one thing out of the way: this year's Dawning community challenge. It was a free event, free to all players. And, honestly, the rewards were better than the very first community challenge we had right before Shadowkeep launched. So, let's take a look at the history of community challenges we've had in D2. The Mars Community Challenge, Season of Opulence Before Shadowkeep launched there was a community challenge to complete the following objectives: - Defeat 175,000 Wave 7 Escalation Protocol bosses - Defeat 300 million HIve on Mars - Defeat the Will of Thousands Nightfall 100,000 times - Defeat the Strange Terrain Nightfall 150,000 times - Use 300,000 Override Frequencies Completing all of those objectives was the challenge. And what was the reward? An emblem that literally no one uses, (and very few probably used at all,) and increased Menagerie rewards, an event that had been live the entire season and most people probably already had the rolls they were looking for on each weapon you could grind for. And to get the emblem, you personally had to complete at least one of the nightfalls. That's it. Pretty lackluster if you ask me. But, the community absolutely demolished these goals. I would say that the vast majority of the community that was active at that time participated, and recieved the emblem. So, if the rewards were lackluster, why did the majority of the community participate? Well, the first reason: It was the first ever community challenge. That had some excitement to it. But, beyond that, we all knew what the rewards were going to be, and we had to actively choose if we were going to participate by completing at least one Nightfall. The Fractaline Harvest Community Challenge, Season of Dawn Honestly, the Fractaline event was the absolute best loot farm we've ever had in the game. You knew what you were going to get, and the only thing left to RNG was the roll you would get. But, this event was laughable to me because the reward for harvesting and investing all of the Fractaline was that, once completed, Trials of Osiris would return to the game. That's a pretty dope reward. A pinnacle end-game pvp activity. I'm not here to discuss the state of Trials since launch, but objectively speaking, that's a pretty solid reward. But, what would have happened if we failed that event? Would they not have brought back Trials? Bungie spent manhours, money, and resources to bring back Trials. There is no way they wouldn't have brought it back if we had failed it. So, honestly, was there really a point for that community challenge? Seraph Tower Community Challenge, Season of the Worthy Now let's take a look at the Seraph Tower community challenge, a challenge that we would have failed if Bungie didn't step in and triple our progress. What was the reward for that? Felwinter's Lie, a weapon that was so OP in D1 that they removed it's main perk from the game. The community was hyped to get it back, and it's also a pretty solid reward for a community challenge. But, once again, what would have happened if we failed? There's no way Bungie would have spent time and resources on bringing back a weapon that has the history that Felwinter's has, and the story mission we got alongside it, to not give it to us. So, once again, the community challenge was arbitrary and pointless. And that brings us to this year's Dawning community challenge. Again, I think the rewards for it are better than the Mars Community Challenge we had in Season of Opulence. And had we failed it, it's not like the playerbase would be missing out on much, and it really didn't require many resources for Bungie, as the loot we recieved was already in the game. Honestly, I love the idea of community challenges. But there has been a lot to be desired in the execution. So, what's my suggestion if 50% of the community challenges have been failures? Three things: 1. Let us know what the rewards are ahead of time similar to the Mars community challenge. 2. Shower us with loot like the Fractaline community challenge. 3. Let there be actual repercussions if we, as a community, fail the challenge and make sure those who actually participate are the ones that get the rewards. No freebies for those who refuse to participate. I know this was kind of a long post, but I tried to approach the subject respectfully, and I hop it doesn't fall on deaf ears. Cheers!
