Problem Reading Game Content Error

Hello Destiny Community! I have been playing D2 on my Xbox since November 2019, and I have recently acquired a new laptop, which I would like to play D2 on. Everything worked fine with the Steam installation, I completed the cross-save, but when I went to open up the game for the first time, the game froze. It froze bad. I pressed enter to get past the Shadowkeep screen, and then the game froze, forcing me to restart my laptop, as I was unable to close the game, or even open the Task Manager. I tried again and again, having to restart every time, until I finally accepted that something was wrong. I have tried many solutions, and have proggresed a little bit, as the game now tells me what the problem is. The game would close, and prompt an error message that says: "Problem reading game content. please close Destiny 2, right click on Destiny 2 in the Steam app to run 'VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES...' in 'Properties'. Then restart Destiny 2 to try again." I of course, did this, and it happened again. I think that there was a situation like this back when Shadowkeep first launched, where players had to delete a "steam_appid.txt" file from the game, but I can't find that. I have deleted and reinstalled D2 files, I have reinstalled the game, I have looked for any possible reason as for why the game won't work. Now, I'm no computer expert, so it's possible I may have missed something. If someone can help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it. Sorry this is so long, I just wanted to give the commmunity all of the info I have.

  • Hey for anyone who might still be having a problem with this issue, I tried changing the language to French by right clicking on destiny 2 in steam and then choosing properties. After switching the language the game worked fine which was a relief after messing with it for 2 hours.

    • I had this problem for awhile, then my friend said he fixed the same issue on his rig by replacing his RAM. I did a Memtest (free software Memtest86) and indeed my 3 month old RAM in a new build was throwing tons of errors. After RMA'ing the RAM, I haven't had any issues over the past several months. I couldn't believe that my RAM was bad because I could play several other games, but test it to be sure. Good luck! It was a super annoying issue.

I believe that I've found a fix for this if you have an NVIDIA GPU: - Launch the GeForce experience - Click on Destiny 2 - Click Play My entire post for the solution is here, but above is the TLDR: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/258098806

    • Hey there, It appears that your issue is a known issue and there is a workaround, hold tight.
General Problem Reading Game Content: Players who are encountering “problem reading game content” errors on Steam should try deleting the steam_appid.txt file in their Destiny 2 folder. Players performing these steps must also ensure that they are NOT launching Destiny 2 using the “Run as Administrator” option. Example directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Destiny 2 Players may also find this under …\Destiny2\bin\x64
For that and other known issues on PC you can always go to PC Known Issues

      • Hey there! You may want to verify the integrity of your game files in the Steam app to see if that helps with your issue. If that doesn't help, here are more suggestions that may help you:
1. Go to your Games library, right-click Destiny 2 and go to Properties. Click Local Files then Browse Local Files to open your Destiny 2 directory. Remove all files in this folder EXCEPT "Packages "then verify the integrity of Destiny 2 game files again. 2. Make sure that your HDD/SDD isn't full. 3. Update your drivers or do a fresh install 4. Some players have reported that changing the game language may resolve the issue. 5. Make sure everything in the D2 Steam folder isn’t set to read-only. 6. This post suggests moving your game files around. 7. You may want to uninstall and reinstall D2 and Steam if none of these suggestions help.
Please note that laptops are not fully supported when playing Destiny 2 since they are bound to cause crashes and freezes.
