VPN and Destiny 2

After having one of the worst experiences this weekend with crucible, I am looking to improve my online experience. Can anyone attest to a better gaming experience while utilizing a VPN? I use a Nighthawk router and I'm hardwired to it, however, I still have an abysmal online experience. I have a decent connection at 400 down and 50 up. Priority is to the console and I'm STILL always seeing a bad connection to the host. At this point I just don't want to be DDOS'd in trials but any additional benefit for VPN gaming I'd be interested in hearing. A quick insight to my knowledge of VPN's; encrypted data that assists users making sure it's not sold, stolen, etc. Edit: I'm gonna go ahead and thank everyone for replying here. The consensus seems to be not worth it for gaming experience, but, privacy is a plus.

  • 1. Reduce your bandwidth to 1 down and .25 up 2. Stream Netflix on 4 devices 3 don't use hardwired, WiFi only. 4. Profit

    • VPN will not increase your gaming experience, it could be quite the opposite. Your internet speed has very little to do with your game connection quality, it is more a factor of the packet hops and if they get lost or delayed (ping). If you connect via VPN the traffic gets funneled through a 3rd party, making the number of hops more unreliable. So your traffic goes to a vpn service and their infrastructure, where it gets sent to the destination. When the traffic comes back it needs to go through the same route. Even worse, between you and the vpn the traffic also gets encrypted, which slows it down even more since it requires processing power. So sometimes the ping to destination will be 30ms, the next one could be 120ms. If the vpn provider handles a lot of traffic it will be worse in some cases. And if you use vpn to be in a different region it will be substantially worse. So why does netflix etc work? Well, they don't require realtime packets, the stream can be delayed since it is buffered.

    • I have a Nighthawk with DumaOS and it works well to keep the connections “close” to me. I have my geofilter set for the U.S. so I don’t get paired with folks across the ocean when I need a good connection while I’m playing comp. It won’t keep you from getting DoS’d but it’ll keep the other people in your lobby close enough that latency shouldn’t be a big issue. You should also forward any ports D2 recommends.

    • 400 down 50 up is "decent"? I get 100/10 and I'm fine lol

    • VPN simply creates a network in the framework of the internet which is not tied to physical machines, and for the avg. user operates more like a proxy, avoiding filters that normally target a country or region. I doubt you will see a big increase in connectivity, because that VPN, just like your home network would be pinging the same people. If you knew an exact area that had great connection for the average user, you could use a proxy to be listed in that area, and better your chances of finding strong connections. There is a small chance you'll do better, but I really doubt it. If you're using any tertiary equipment be careful as well, because they have been know to set off bungie's cheater alarms. People have been accidentally banned for using things like a second monitor.

      • Its good for browsing the internet, but it slows the connection to the point its not worth it for gaming unless you actually run into people that DDOS

      • I bought the nighthawk a couple years ago and had issues from day 1 for 6 months after having all kinds of problems with another Netgear router before that. After that I switched to an ASUS and have had zero problems since. I would recommend trying some new hardware if you haven't.

        • you might not need a VPN, as you aren’t on PC.

          • You really dont need a vpn, thats only for ddos protection and your internet will actually slow down a little bit. I wont be running a vpn for trials because my team will still get kicked if i come across ddos’ers. If you have a nighthawk, 400/50mbps speed, wired connection and console set to #1 on QoS then there isnt much you can do to improve performance. Open NAT via static ip, all destiny 2 + console ports forwarded and using optimal dns servers for your area is all i can think of. Portforward.com is missing alot of destiny ports so use bungies help page below. https://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Troubleshoot?oid=13610

              • Unfortunately, playing through a VPN will not stop cheaters from lag switching, drop hacking, or DDoSing, on console or PC. What a VPN can do is protect your home internet from being disconnected by a DDoS attack, but you will still likely have to disconnect from your VPN server and switch to another server before you regain connectivity, and you will still be disconnected from the match (counts as 'quitting' and thus a 'loss'). I'd still recommend playing through a VPN for privacy and security reasons, and so you don't have to waste time rebooting your router/modem, especially if others in your home rely on always-on internet (eg. home business, internet-enabled medical devices, etc.): https://beta.support.xbox.com/help/Hardware-Network/connect-network/dos-attacks-faq https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/game/use-vpn-xbox-one-3671248/ https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/game/use-vpn-ps4-3670694/ https://www.pcgamer.com/the-strange-science-of-destiny-2s-uniquely-complicated-netcode/
