This step. Is so. Horribly frustrating... For solo players, anyway. Of which I am one. It only gains progress if you melee kill majors, but melee does no damage to majors. Guns do a lot of damage to majors. What are most randoms doing? They're shooting majors. Meanwhile I am desperately trying to get major melee kills and I just can't because my teammates running any decent weapon will kill them nigh instantly. Even worse, I'll get one secluded and carefully whittle it down to within melee kill range and a teammate will just round the corner and kill it.
Just... either let teammate melee kills count since anyone who isn't shooting the majors is still fighting over them, or let me melee 25 minor enemies to complete it instead. Because two hunts later I have 12 fragments. I have managed to secure FOUR kills in two hunts. This is needlessly annoying. Sorry for sounding salty, but I kind of am.
Edit: I did already finish this step out of basically sheer luck. I was playing on Warlock so I didn't have access to one-shot melees like the other two classes. Also, I did try finishers. They don't work.

yeah, its not like Bungie to create a quest step that completely goes against the objectives of the game mode, or you team mates.
-
Very very bad quest design! How can designer be so narrow-minded! Are you tested it? SHAME!
-
Took me almost TWO HOURS to complete this memory fragment because of what you mentioned above in your post. What do you expect from Bungie though? They're the masters of making bounties and quests that forces guardians to fight one another rather than to work together on an objective and they don't listen to feedback. They recently adjusted heavy for Crucible but the changes still aren't enough. We want the D1 heavy system back. What do they do? Not give us the D1 heavy system that'll solve all of our heavy issues in Crucible.

2 RepliesSet your console time 1 hour back, then load into the moon and if you see ppl just fast travel to annother spot and voila you are in a solo instance 😉

7 RepliesShe gave me no reward. Other than phantasmal core? What am I missing?
-
I did this last night on my Warlock. Took 3 runs. Winters Guile and done.
-
5 RepliesI feel bad for you guys. As a titan, this step was a breeze.
-
To the moderator that reads this that has relations with the lead developer who came up with Vell Tarlow quest in regards to meleeing nightmares an high level ai's. Please go up to this individual an smack upside the head for creating this horrible idea, without comprehending that 2 other teamates are shooting what you are trying to melee. Aggravation / temper tantrum over.
-
5 RepliesI did it in 1 run. I just ran arc strider and stacked combination blow. The real trick was staying ahead of my teammates so I could kill the majors
-
I just stayed slightly ahead of my teammates and made beelines for the majors. Used perfect paradox and just held trigger till they had sliver of health and punched 1-2 times and did the job. Got it done in one run
-
yeah, really wish i could just solo the hunts, would make this unnecessary quest step less insufferable
-
Eris Morn doesn't give me that mission. I do not know what to do.
-
2 RepliesI got the quest step done, as a solo player, in one Phogoth nightmare hunt with two randoms. The biggest tip that I can give to people is to be fairly close to your target, get them down to Finisher health, then punch them. They've essentially set it up to where Finishers do about the same damage as an uncharged melee.
-
2 RepliesI did it in two runs. Just be greedy and wait for your teammates to weaken an enemy then bop 'em in the noggin with a melee. Also slap nightmares, they give more
-
1 ReplyI got it done in five runs....and that's counting two misfires where I was using finishing moves, which didn't count. ...and I did it as a Warlock. Here's what you do. 1. Focus on the Nightmare "trash mobs". 2. Whittle down their health until the dot which shows that they can be killed by a finishing move appears.....move in...and finish them off with one or two melee attacks. You'll lose some to accidents and "poachers". But you can count on at least one or two such kills per run...and each kill gives you THREE fragments. So you really only need to 8 such kills to complete the quest step.

Somebody did say, just be greedy and wait til others half lowered their health then go in with the kill. May you tell me though, what this step is for please? EDIT: If you haven’t already, check KellyGreen2 reply - it is very useful. Also, not sure if you are new to this game but unfortunately Bungie are known for frustrating steps that are counterproductive to the game.

4 RepliesLegit did it in 2 nightmare hunts. It’s not hard at all.
-
2 RepliesI finished it in one hero nightmare hunt >.> it's not hard.
-
You could just shoot them, leave just a sliver of health, then melee them. At least that’s how I would do it.
-
1 ReplyIf your a titan bottom tree striker hunter either void blade boi or arc staff all melees if you a warlock rip in the chat
-
This step was annoying, but because you needed to repeat nightmare hunts. After I did all three nightmare hunts on hero, I went back to them on adept and used my melee ability on the nightmare enemies when they were at low enough health.
-
2 RepliesDo sword kills count as melee kills?
-
I don't know why it has to be the kill to get it, everything else is shared next to group members, now we're all fighting over a nightmare, making this frustrating as hell, players standing next to me doing nothing while I shoot them down and then they grab the melee kill as soon as it's within one punch.

Edited by superluigi6968: 10/9/2019 5:49:03 PMYeah, I got that step, looked at it, and decided to go play something else. Nightmare Hunts are already boring to me, why tf would I go into an activity I don't even like, gimping myself for a quest? It'd be one thing if it were just "Defeat Nightmares with melee attacks," but no, it's specifically Nightmare Hunts. It reminds me of quests routing players through Crucible, Gambit, or Vanguard strikes for no particular reason. It just seems like a "get them to do the activity if they want to progress" sort of thing. The dumb thing is that it would be beyond easy for a Titan or a Hunter, but as my Warlock is the one with the quest, guess I would be in for a miserable time
-
2 RepliesHunter= liars handshake Titan= grieves Warlock= uuhhh finish him ??
-
I just stole the kills from my other 2 teammates. I ran bottom tree striker, and I finished in two nightmare hunts. When I finished I would lower the health of the nightmares with a machine gun so the others could get their melees
