where is the line between a ghost and a guardian's abilities?

like, for example, without our ghost, can we still use grenades? melee abilities like throwing knives? warlock magic? supers? i'm not saying without the light, but if our ghost wasn't around for whatever reason, or chose not to help, what could we still do? obviously ressurection is directly tied to our ghost, and i healing is too, but what about the third of our health bar that's shields, or transmat to and from our ships? i'd like to think there's plenty we can do without ghost, but it'd also be a little sucky if he was a one-trick pony.

  • Ghosts can only transmat and heal and rez us. That’s all they do. They are the most one-trick of one-trick ponies.

  • As far as I know, Ghosts can sate a Guardian's biological needs as well as healing them and reviving them from death. I believe it grants us a theoretically indefinite lifespan, but idk if that's true or not. However, our abilities come from our Guardian. Osiris is a good example since even when Sagira was damaged and then shell-jacked Nolanbot, he was fully capable of still using his light to make Reflections and hold off Panoptes.

    • In regards to our own abilities. I think the ghost is the key that unlocks them. So we should be able to use them without our ghost nearby. But ghost is for sure responsible for healing and rezing. Don’t know if the connection to the light is severed when the ghost is destroyed/deactivated but the light is still there in the guardian since a guardian in the savathun‘s song strike lost his ghost before his light was extracted.

    • I think the ghost is what allows us to regenerate health and is likely the reason why guardians don’t age or need to sleep or eat. However I don’t think they are the reason why can use our abilities.

    • The Ghost is a gateway for you to get the light. No Ghost = No light. No light = No abilities.

Here’s what we know: Ghosts can heal and revive their Guardian. They can also use a “Light link” (see “Fragment” entry of Stolen Intelligence) to contain and transmat objects. In the case of Light links we don’t know where the line between Light and Human matter encryption technology is drawn, but Ghosts constantly use that technology for transmat, encryption, storage, telemetry, etc. Ghosts also have incredible computational ability and can interact with and/or manipulate just about any tech. This is also most likely due to some kind of mix of the Light and the hyper-advanced technological ability of Ghosts. Guardians already have the Light in them before a Ghost ever finds them. This Light (often referred to as a “spark of Light”) is given to them by the Traveler, though even Ghosts have no idea why/how the Traveler chooses its candidates. The Ghost “ignites” this Light in the Guardian when they first revive their Guardian. Guardians use their Light completely independently from their Ghosts. Guardians use their own Light for their abilities (grenades, supers, etc.). We still don’t know what effect a Ghost’s death has on their Guardian. The only good examples we have of Guardians surviving after their Ghosts’ deaths are Eris and Toland, but lack of details and their use of Hive arcana makes it impossible to tell how their Light was affected. Other examples include Cayde-6 (who was already near death when his Ghost died and was killed before he could do anything) and Lush, who lost his Ghost to Taniks. Afterwards Lush was supposedly still capable of fieldwork -meaning he likely still had full use of his Light- but his companions wanted him to avoid fights, though he left the City shortly after without telling anyone and is undoubtedly dead. Another example is the Guardian in One-Eyed Mask, but there is nothing to tell us how his Ghost’s death affected him or if his Light returned when the Traveler awoke (however, the fact that he recovered from what the Cabal did to him hints that he may have regained his Light and gained the strength to survive or even heal a little). There have been several situations where Guardians and Ghosts had their Light suppressed by Darkness zones, but all Guardians and Ghosts seemed to be affected individually. When Sai Mota’s Ghost was badly damaged and near-death in the Hellmouth, Sai didn’t seem to be in any worse condition than Eriana-3. When Toland was near Ir Yut, his Ghost was screaming from the force of the Darkness, but Toland wasn’t affected and even killed the Ghost because it was annoying him, and was unaffected by the death of his Ghost (again, Toland isn’t a very good example because of his ties to Hive arcana). As for Ghosts abandoning their Guardians, Dredgen Yor left his Ghost on Mars after it finally decided to abandon him, but this had no effect on Yor. Also, Ikora and her Ghost had a really bad falling out that lasted countless years and their friendship is only just now being mended, but Ikora never lost any of her ability with the Light during this. When the Traveler was caged, Ghosts and Guardians simultaneously lost their Light. So, for those who might ask, there is no proof that the Ghosts lost their connection to the Light and the Guardians lost their connection as a result of that. It has also been said a few times in lore that distance from the Traveler affects the Light of Guardians and Ghosts. Then there was the Traveler being caged. So the best thing we can say is that Ghosts and Guardians all draw their Light from the Traveler.

The ghost can’t exactly leave us if we want our light... (Drifter for example hates his ghost) It acts sort of like a connector from the traveler to ourselves. We’re the killing machines, the ghost is our power supply.

            • I'm pretty sure guardians only really carry a little bit of light at a time (eg a grenade charge, a melee charge, etc...) and the recharge and healing powers are the result of our ghost sending more light our way as needed/over time. So without a ghost I'm guessing a guardian *may* ba able have one unused grenade charge or something left, but then that would be it

              • How does the type of guardian get chosen? Like some scumbag under achieving Uber driver loser chokes on a delicious hot pastrami sandwich with mustard, swiss, and cracked pepper on rye bread, only to wake up 6 years later as a warlock with all the magic and smarts? Do you chose what you are after you're raised or does the ghost choose for you? Does a titan have capability to throw a nova bomb if he really wanted to?

Oh we are heavily reliant on them but the lore is hazy, not a lot of concrete facts. Just implied through examples in the lore. Lemme breakdown what I know and think. We don’t need our Ghost to like us to retain our power, there is a Ghost killing Guardian out in the Shore still around. His Ghost said he regretted not paying more attention to his scans that told him the man wasn’t mentally fit to be revived. So this Ghost choose to make its Guardian. Another story tells how during the scan of a person the Ghost lost control and felt like the revival was done through it rather then by it. So the selection for this one was “destined”, so long as the person was actually scanned in the first place. A nice little random chance element that wound up having a major impact. Note this for later. I feel like the conversations between Bad Guardians and their Ghosts leaves room for a Ghost to somehow discontinue. Either by distance or some other cutoff mechanism. All known instances of Ghosts abandoning their Guardians, but it not being destroyed, involved Bad Guardians who have Dark power. So we can’t tell what effect distance might have. Distance wise...let’s look at the ones I can recall. Aunor had hers taken within the City, Rezzyl left his on the surface of the Moon and went down into the Hive labyrinth. Osiris seems to be the longest distance example, nothing is implied he lost his powers when Sagaria was wounded or away from him but we don’t know since we never see. He did survive and maintained his power within the Forest during the interim, so I’d have to say he had his power. Just not his revive since she was gone. Most times when the two get separated one or both gets destroyed. So it’s a hazy area of lore. Dredgen Yor didn’t destroy his Ghosts just sent it away. It never came back as far as we know to revive him, meaning it moved on. Some Ghosts are known to abandon looking or lose their Guardian and don’t look for another. Jaren Wards Ghost took the place of Shin Malphurs. Shin Malphur is noted case above. In order for “grown up” Shin to be able to become the legend he is today he had to be alive right? So the Ghost scan revealed something About the state of the soul in the future Which is an awesome and sets up several unique instances; a child being chosen, a Guardian losing a Ghost and becoming normal and living a normal life, a former Guardian being selected by a Ghost, a Ghost having a second Guardian. Which sets up some flexibility for Ghost Guardian pairing rules. All life has a “spark” but those Sparks not exactly like our Light. It’s more reminiscent of the soul of a living being. This spark is actually quite peculiar. The Ghost who revived Shin when he was young didn’t understand how his moral character could be judged already. That implied predestiny in souls is pretty important. When you consider Ghosts are also called companion souls in relation to our Guardians. Souls that were mechanized instead of born, made to find peo D1 lore about Ghosts is...interesting...and freaking weird. Hard to know how much still applies. Revival and healing seem to rely on them. Transmit is possible without them but we or someone else would have to. I think however that they rely on telemetry from the Ghost. Coordinates and all. We would have to have something on us like a transponder to mark locations for stuff coming and going. However, in regards to them enabling abilities, they don’t really “do “ anything to do that. Once they revive us we are bonded and always have our powers, we just need to learn them and grow our strength. Destroy the Ghost, we become mortal. By extension of the Traveler being caged, there should be a way to cage a Ghost to disrupt our Light. It’s noted that as the Light becomes stronger so too do Ghosts. They are now tougher to kill, as revealed with Forsaken. That’s why Ghosts stay hidden in combat. They are what makes Guardians possible.

                  • Without our ghost we would be no different to that dirt-bag that calls himself the drifter or those that were there right after the collapse. As annoying as that little shit is it better to have a ghost then to not have one at all ... but as for our abilities as guardians they are our own and no one else’s . You are the one that is in control of your light not the ghost which is only there to serve you not the other way around ..... something that even bungie has forgotten

Luke Smith probably just told the girl writer to make respawning make sense storywise, and she just said ‘ok, we’ll just have Staten’s ghosts capable of reviving except when the game says not to, because we’re not creative enough to come up with proper lore- and game-suiting weaknesses.’
• Our ghosts are really just there to open doors, give us information, provide a flashlight, and allow our resurrection when we die. All of our abilities are independently sourced from the traveler, and don't depend on the ghost in order to function.

                      • We don't need the Ghost to use our abilities, Ghost revive and heal use but there are abilities that do can do the dame like sungsinger self rez or that one hunter who got separated from his ghost but was still able to use the void bow. A Ghost cannot live without periodically returning to the traveler for unless it finds a guardian, then it can stay away indefinitely, an example would be the Ghost who stowed away onboard a Guardian ship to mars in search of it risen but was running low on light because it was to far from the traveler and did not yet find a Guardian.
