Why did Variks release Uldren and the Barons?

So I’ve read the lore, and I’m still pretty confused as to what Varik’s motive was when freeing Uldren and the Barons. He seemed to feel bad for Uldren and wanted to cure him as well as the Scorn from the darkness that afflicted them. I know he left the PoE to pursue his goal of restoring the Eliksni, but why free Uldren and the barons? Was it pity, or a final act of service to his fallen prince? Or did Variks come to believe that Uldren actually was communing with Mara, as he claimed, and Mara told him it was the right thing to do? The lore tabs are unclear, so any insight would be appreciated!

  • People seem to forget that what Petra did was kind of -blam!-ed up. She kept Uldren’s survival as a secret, locking him in a cell only she and Variks had access to. Even if he had gone mad, she kept that to herself. Which ties into a revelation we get with the Dreaming City weapons. Petra wasn’t left in Command because of her leadership skills, it was her ability to keep faith in Mara Sov alive because of her utter devotion to the woman.

He also needed to get out of there and take matters into his own hands for his people. I’m proud of him. I think the lore tabs imply exactly what you said, that he pitied him, that it was an act of loyalty. He may have believed Uldren communed with mara. Variks is a hero, Variks is misunderstood. He’s loyal and strong and he’s going to unite his people and be Kell of Kells. He didn’t need to take the crap at the reef anymore, where he was treated like sh*t.

      • Because he felt a misguided loyalty to Uldren. He also wanted to escape from the prison himself so that he could start his journey to become the new Kell of Kells, so he started the riot as a cover-up. I don’t think he really meant for the Barons to escape.

      • He felt he owed loyalty to Uldran. The riot was also a cover for his own escape.

He freed ALL the prisoners, so Uldren and the Barons weren't exactly his top priority. Honestly Variks has always had a problem with thinking plans through to the end so I honestly think that he forgot how much collateral damage he'd cause by letting every prisoner out of their cells That's the thing about the new Variks lore, people blame him for Cayde's death more then Riven and savathûn. Meaning we're a lot more vengeful then we should be

        • Inb4triggeredshadowheart But if he didn’t, we wouldn’t have gotten that oh-so good forsaken expansion. So, uh... thanks?

        • We can mostly only guess, but Variks’ perspective shows us that there was a lot that influenced his decision and we know that mostly it was an act of loyalty to Uldren and Mara. The Awoken were so ruined that the Prison of Elders was their last stronghold. The Awoken weren’t in any condition to maintain the Prison for much longer, especially because they only had one Warden Servitor left. They might not even have been able to run the Prison effectively in his absence. Variks might have released all the prisoners because he saw no point in leaving them to rot there if the Awoken would eventually lose control of it anyway. Perhaps Variks thought Petra would be able to contain the riot without any serious trouble. In fact, Petra was able to effectively contain the riot with the help of Cayde and the Guardian, despite Cayde’s death. Maybe Variks thought Uldren would be able to slip out while the other prisoners were caught.

          • It was the final act of service to Uldren. It was also secondarily useful to release all of the Fallen held within, the Fallen being the most populous group in the PoE. With his goal of restoring the Eliksni and preventing the extinction Fikrul fought for, Variks thought it best to allow every Rliksni a chance at freedom to better his chances at gaining a following.
