Where do Fanfics belong?
Edit: This post is now obsolete, because of the removal of the #Gallery forum. Currently fanfiction belongs in the #Lore forum. Please add #fanfiction and #fanfic to your posts.
Where do Fanfics belong?
This post is a little lengthy, so here’s the short version: The best place for your fanfictions (in my opinion) is #Gallery, and use #fanfiction on all fanfic posts. We should try to get all the fanfics to one place, for the benefit of writers and readers.
As many of you may know, there has always been an issue of deciding where to post fanfics. Most people post their stories in #Lore or #Gallery/#Community, and occasionally in other forums such as #Classes, depending on the subject of the fanfic (and fanfics/stories not related to Destiny are posted in #Gaming or #OffTopic, depending on their theme). Bungie allows fanfics in these forums, and there has never been any decisive statement about a specific place where fanfics belong. You can follow this link to see some of Bungie’s statements on the matter. This, among other things, has caused some dispute in the forums over where fanfics should be put. The Lore forum, specifically, has had a lot of “flak” directed towards writers. One of the most repeated messages out of all the forums is “This isn’t lore.”* This phrase is most commonly used against fanfics (and people looking for groups) in the Lore forum.
*other popular messages include, but are not limited to: •Wether we wanted it or not... •How do I get a Destiny girlfriend? •This community is toxic •SYLOK, THE DEFILED •Everyone is Zavathûn apparently •no u •What if everything you ever wanted... WAS TO KICK S*** IN THE FACE!? FOREVER! THEN YOU NEED PEREGRINE GREAVES!!! •KSeth, don’t you dare kill another -blam!-ing character •Edge Transit •<these little things on the ends of literally everything Archival Mind says> For more popular messages, check out Common Messages in the Forums
As you may know, I have been trying to move writers to #Gallery #Gallery forum: “Express your creativity.” Simply put, the #Gallery forum is for your creations (writing, art, videos, etc.). It is the best place for fanfics. The Lore forum, as you may have guessed, is for lore. There has always been a lot of resistance towards fanfics in #Lore. And it’s only because you’re in the wrong place. This has been a problem since the beginning. Many of Destiny’s best and oldest fanfic writers have been in the Gallery for a long time, posting their work and creating a large and incredibly supportive community for fanfics (with several Groups, Clans, and Discords). Need proof? Check the Destiny Fiction Archive, with literally hundreds of fanfics by various writers (though the list is incomplete -and always will be- but is constantly growing). Having all the fanfics in one place would be fantastic for writers and readers. Another very helpful thing you can do is use #fanfiction on your posts. Sadly, there is no actual fanfiction forum, but this hashtag is the next best thing. Readers can follow it and see all posts with the same hashtag. READERS! Let the writer know you’re reading! Seriously! Leave an upvote or comment “bump” if you don’t feel like saying anything, but please leave something. Feedback is GREATLY appreciated; more than you know. Don’t leave the writer alone with the haters. The Gallery has plenty of writers, but not many readers. Please, come read our stories! I know many fanfic writers already have posts outside the Gallery. No problem! As long as you have a table of contents or master post, it doesn’t matter. Just use links to connect everything. If you don’t know how to do any of that, I’ll gladly help.
I might repost this message occasionally, so I apologize if it seems redundant to some of you. But people need to see it to know where to put their fanfics. Otherwise, they will continue to be posted in the wrong places and do little more than cause strife. And this applies to all posts. Bungie has created many forums so that every post has its place. It only takes the press of a button to look through the forums and see which one is right for your post.
I encourage you to spread this message. Thank you for your time. Best wishes, KSeth27

    • Where do fanfics belong? In the bin. Or in the trash can, if you prefer. Seriously, it's complete, utter rubbish, or garbage if you prefer.

        • Personal opinion: they don't. Fan fiction, to me, is the equivalent of walking behind the real story, collection its poo, and making infantile, badly or incorrectly done finger paintings on the clean white walls, and calling it a Piccasso. Generally speaking, I've not seen a lot of value in it. Most generally, fanfic to me is 80% squee-mongers somehow sexualizing something that has no business being sexualized, typically by shipping important or established characters into incestous or homosexual relationships (no judgement, but there is normally no suggestion of this in the cannon story). A further 15% is just poorly conceived or written with the literary skill of a first grader from an underfunded charter school. Punctuation is rare, spelling is not done, and words are not often used as defined in any dictionary. It's usually bad. Like, 50 Shades is literary cancer that can't tell the difference between abuse and toxic relationships and a consentual participation in an alternative lifestyle, and it's far and away better. Which is sad, considering 50 Shades of Written by a Sex Starved Boring Twilight Lover is, in itself, originally fanfiction. To be fair, about 5% of fanfic is true to cannon, not being used to explore latent mommy / daddy/ brother / sister / friend sexual repression issues, explores fringe material in a way that stimilates news thoughts and theories. My theory is: if 95% of a relationship is bad, disturbed, weird, or just generally repellant, I am not hanging around for the 5% of 'good times'. Sorry to say, I know it's a hobby for some, a true passion for others, but I can't enjoy it, respect it, or get behind it. Daydreaming belongs with the daydreamer - it stays more special that way.

                • Open a room in the tower that's a library. People could upload their stories and they'd be put in the game for others to read in their downtime. Or just a fan fiction/lore fiction tab on the forums.

                                • Needs it’s own specific section I’d say. I’d never read them, but those who like them would probably appreciate them all in one spot.

                                  • I think having somewhere specific for it would be a much better idea. Not everyone is into it, myself included (I don’t hate it, just not my thing). But I can appreciate the time and effort the authors put into it and it doesn’t deserve to be exposed to some of the bottom feeders that stalk the general forums.

As someone who recently made the jump from #Lore to #Gallery, I feel somewhat obligated to explain my experiences regarding this topic. Please understand that I am not intending to demean or aggravate anyone, as my statements are solely meant to help anyone who is still deciding by granting my own opinions. Firstly, I want to quote my reply to Archival Mind’s post in this thread to serve as a Tl,dr:
I’ve recently made the jump to #Gallery, and so far my experiences have been mixed. It is unfortunately true that most posts receive very little attention, and so far I have only received a small fraction of my normal rates of activity, and most of what I do receive is from that of my friends which followed my journey along the way. I have also received very little in terms of feedback, which was the main reason for my transition. But I must also acknowledge that I have only made two posts there so far, therefore meaning that I am still too newly arrived to experience any long term effects. That is my honest statement on the matter, and I sincerely hope that it has helped in some way.
#Gallery is most certainly less active than #Lore, and in my currently short experience with the tag I must state that any concerns regarding engagement are justified. I must also reemphasize that I have only been there for about a week and a half. There are definitely huge positives to moving that I cannot deny, such as the lack of major down-vote spam and other examples of mostly unhelpful feedback (downvotes alone are inherently lacking in constructive nature, as it provides little in terms of indication for improvement.). It is definitely a far more accepting and friendly sub-community within the Bungie forums. But in terms of my own honesty, I must admit I am currently doubtful that I made the right choice in moving. I have never been bothered by downvotes or “muted” replies, for my main and most important goal is to receive feedback in order to grow as a writer. Because of my goals, the severe decrease in engagement is a gigantic problem, and one that has made me reconsider my choice. However, I am still going to honor my words and will only re-decide in a few months time when I have a better long term understanding of the consequences and benefits to #Gallery. I am currently still too inexperienced to say anything more definitive on the matter, so please take all my words with a huge grain of salt. This is not an indicator of the bigger picture. That is all I have to say on the matter with my current unchallenged outlook, and I look forward to any counter arguments I may receive, and am hopeful that we can have a civil and respectful discussion. As always, thank you for your time.

                                            • Engagement truly is the life blood of literature. Without feedback (at least upvotes) a story dies. Destiny has amazing Lore, but if it weren't for the #lore forum or YouTubers then many would never had know about it.
