The Drifter was a Guardian

In the new TwaB, we see a screenshot from the Drifters vendor menu. Over his name in the bottom left corner, it states: “Rogue Lightbearer” So, this mostly likely makes im a Guardian. But due his description of “rogue”, I don’t think he is an “active” Guardian, meaning that he probably doesn’t go out doing strikes and being the good guy. What he’s up to exactly remains a mystery though. My knowledge of the Shadows of Yor is limited, but if they are former Guardians as well, then him being one of them has become more likely. If they aren’t born of light, then we can scrap that. As far as his class goes, I think he also has abandoned that practice and does not conform to classes. He looks to be a mix of Titan and Hunter, but I just think that classes don’t apply to him anymore.

  • I'm fairly certain he is Dredgen Yor. Yes yes I know he's "dead." ___________ Spoiler? Ace in the hole Quest Cayde says that The Drifter is 'in hiding' and that if he comes out of hiding the 'man with the golden gun' will be looking for him. The man with the golden gun is Shin Malphur, so he CAN'T be Shin, and the only person that we know Shin would come hunt down and kill without a second's thought? Why his former mentor turned villain whom he had thought he killed. ___________

    • An interesting thing to note is that along with the drifter seeming like a cross between a hunter or Titan, Dredgen Yor/Rezyl Azzir was in fact a Titan disguised as a Hunter. His path of drifting off from the ways of normal guardians and falling to the powers of the dark, seemed like something that affiliated him more with the ways of a hunter. He took up the cloak as a ploy to paint his story in a different light. Idk maybe it's completely unrelated but we hopefully will eventually see...

    • He’s definitely a Shadow. For sure. Why else would Malfeasance, a weapon of Sorrow, possibly a Thorn replica, be related to Gambit?

    • I have a theory. I believe The Drifter to be Shin Malphur. Wielder of The Last Word. His trivia tab on destinypedia points out two things. 1. Shin was unique in he was already gifted with the light and... 2. Shin was referred to as a renegade hunter or a lone gunman. Sounds an awful like Rogue Lightbearer to me

      • I'm willing to bet that he's a follower of Yor. He seems pretty fascinated by the darkness. If you listen to what he says in some gambit gameplay, it sounds like he kinda likes the darkness. And the malfeasance handcannon (weird taken looking handcannon) is from gambit.

        • We don’t know how old he is. For all we know, he could’ve been one of the first to be resurrected. It’s always the older ones that go rogue. Can’t blame them, though. Our Guardian has been alive for like 4 years and I’m already done defending the City. If Hawthorne thinks she’s All That then let her and her crew do it all since Guardians are obviously the worst for protecting humanity.
Just let me get my lawn chair and popcorn before she goes into an Ascendent Realm to silence whatever hellspawn lurks within. I’m sure she’ll do great :)
• There are people in the lore who were light bearers but not guardians as they didn’t have a ghost and/or not revived by a ghost they were born with the light. You can’t be revived by the traveler you are revived by your ghost, even “the risen” had ghosts but didn’t call themselves guardians until much later when they decided to combine there gifts and protect instead of rule. shin malphur is a very good example of someone with the light but not a guardian - he instead inherited a ghost and became immortal/a guardian. The drifter is possibly this a person born with the light but not a guardian because he doesn’t and never did have a ghost and he wasn’t revived.

            • Just because he wields Light doesn’t make him a Guardian. He is a Shadow of Yor though.

            • Lightbearer just means they were resurected by the traveler, that doesn't make one a guardian, just a risen. Guardian were risen that came together in defense of the city.

                • Rogue lightbearer huh? Probably means he follows neither the light nor the dark, but rather, somewhere in between.

                    • Almost like The Risen or the old Warlords. They use Light, but for their own gain...and others if they desire.

Whats odd is that it says “Rogue Lightbearer”, not Rogue Guardian. This makes me think that he was revived by a Ghost and can use the Light, but that he was not a Guardian. Remember, the Sunbreakers were Light Bearers but they were not Guardians. Guardians specifically refers to Light users that work from the City and who fall under the command of the Vanguard.

He was probably never a Guardian; thus, class descriptions don't apply to him if he was never trained in any of the disciplines.

                        • Not all risen became guardians. Ex. The sunbreakers, the hundreds of warlords the iron lords fought, the edgy dudes who pretend to be dredgen yor, etc.

Well your line of thought might be right.. but if he is a rogue guardian, wouldnt that make Efferdit and Ana rogue guardians? Efferdit ran off to be with some pacifist hippy guardians out somewhere, and Ana faked her own death to chase her past... finding more and more of these run away guardians..

They believe that Dredgen Yor was not a bad guy, just a good guy forced to do bad things for the greater good. Now then back in D1 they were found to be participating in the crucible, kinda how the Vanguard knew about them. There could have been a secret purge that we do not know about as of yet. But with all that has happened I doubt it. The thing that casts doubt that Gambit has anything to do with the Shadows was the writer behind the whole story of the Thorn and Yor Jon Goff responded when asked about the Shadows of Yor.
Ha! Appreciate it! But there are other stories to tell. And I’d caution against picking fights you cannot win.
