I made this post maybe around 1-2 months before D2 came out and the only answers that i really got were: something to do with rasputin, the darkness and etc.
Since the game is out we know the answer? I'm still unsure? Help?

On the farm, you can scan an object and ghost says no one knows how the shard got there but he believes it was put there to help us get our light back.

Maybe the Traveler *puts sunglasses on* sharded all over the EDZ.

The EDZ didn't exist until the shard was corrupted by the darkness during the final battle between the traveler and the darkness centuries ago. The shard then broke off the traveler and landed in an area of Europe there. Since it was corrupted by the darkness, but also still retained some light, it warped the area around it and turned it into the European Dead Zone

the never got my permission to use my house. The answer is just because bungie made it that way.

If you look at the Traveller right now, you can see all the chunks coming off of it, that's because it smote (smited?) Gary. The reason they didn't float away is that the Traveller is awake now. Before the Traveller pushed back the Darkness and fell into a "coma" so it's shards flew off.

When the Traveler saved humanity from the darkness, a fragment of it broke off

1 ReplyDuring the collapse the traveler did a similar thing as what it does at the end of the game: sacrifice itself to push back the enemy. Only in the collapse it pushed back the darkness. In doing this it lost a few chunks and those spread out across the world maybe even further.
