I'm pretty sure everyone knows that Carter says "Spartans never die. They're just missing in action", during one of the Reach videos.
I was reading Halo: First Strike for the first time, and I came upon these paragraphs:
.....Linda's medical data winked on a display along with the entire Spartan roster: a long list of every Spartan's current operational status. Only a handful was left, almost every one of them listed as Wounded In Action or Missing In Action.
....."No KIAs?" Dr. Halsey murmured. She touched SPARTAN-034's entry. "Sam is listed as missing in action. Why would that be? He died in 2525."
....."ONI Section Two Directive Nine-Three-Zero," Cortana replied. "When ONI went public with the SPARTAN-II program, it was decided that the reports of Spartan losses could cause a crippling loss of morale. Consequently, any Spartan casualties are listed as MIA or WIA, in order to maintain the illusion that Spartans do not die."
....."Spartans never die?" she whispered. Dr. Halsey swiveled out of the contoured chair and pushed the monitors out of her way with a sudden violence. "If only that were true."
As you can see, this phrase that Carter said originated from this section in the book, Halo: First Strike.

If you think about how many times those officers think "thank god! That spartan was so annoying!" That spartan rises up out of the ashes all BA. Same with master chief in almost all his games. Brink of death, crazy elite about to stab you in the face! But what's this you survive. This is a very real meaning.
Posted by: Epiphany What do you think they say when the humans see an elite with a spartans head in it's hand..... that doesn't seem MIA.
C'mon dude, you made that epic thread the other day...Don't make yourself look like an idiot, now. That's never happened in the Halo universe, that we know of...The only thing close to that is in "The Babysitter" when Cal dies and a marine asks the ODSTs about it...But that's incorrect canon (due to the fact the marine wouldn't know about it, in the first place...and if he did, he'd be forbidden from talking about it to anyone)

This has been around since Sam was killed in The Fall of Reach
Posted by: Eric Elite 001
Posted by: xTWIZTIDxSOULx it was actually spurned in the fall of reach...they are MIA because spartans never die...that way the morale stays high in the colonies, so they wont rebel against the UNSC..heros never die
Oh, that didn't occur to me when reading The Fall of Reach. It's kinda subtle; you wouldn't notice it unless you're looking for it. This was a lot more obvious.
But it was mentioned in quite a lot of TFOR...It's also mentioned in GoO and First Strike...It was mentioned in the "BELIEVE" ad campaign... Basically, it's very well known canon.
Posted by: Eric Elite 001
Posted by: Twenty Two Spartans never die has been a phrase used since the dawn of Halo.
Seriously? I've never heard it once since that trailer. Now, it's written in every other forum post.
This is the oldest thing that exists in halo. If you had any mind, you would know this. This is as new as the fact that halo one, did in fact take place on a halo ring.
Posted by: PatriarchOfFire It was actually used in 500 BC by real Spartans.
This is so old that it's off collecting it's pension, right now. Anyone who's bothered to learn the slightest bit about Halo canon should already know this.
-
He's just showing people that the phrase is not to be taken literally.
