If anyone knows anything about the UESC Marathon, then you'd know it's a giant moon turned into a space station. Officially, it was Deimos, one of the two moons of Mars that was converted. However, take a look at this picture:

Now compare one of the two moons (Pictured above) to the Marathon itself, pictured here:

(Sorry about the small size, I can't get any other official version)
You could probably make the connection pretty easily, the top moon is Marathon. This is wrong. The top moon is actually Phobos, the bottom moon is Deimos, what the UESC Marathon is claimed to be converted from. The UESC looks just like Phobos though, this contradiction is too great to simply pass off easily. Before you go off saying "It's the Marathon story, shut up", I'm not talking about the story. If the story says it was converted from Deimos, so be it. I'm talking about the uncertain knowledge behind the labeling of such story. Why does this contradiction occur?
Marathon was, after all, created in 1994 when just finding such tidbits of knowledge wasn't as easy as it is today. Perhaps whoever wrote the story made a mistake. They also had the distance to Tau Ceti wrong, so I suspect their available astronomical data was not that great. Now is a time for scientific data. Here's the facts: Phobos is in a lower orbit than Deimos, making it harder to reach escape velocity. So using Deimos as a conversion makes more sense, because it would less more energy to reach escape velocity due to its high orbit. This only makes the Phobos conversion less likely, for good measure of course.
It is also suggested that Phobos might actually be hollow. Sounds perfect for a space station, yes? Way back in the 50s and 60s, the orbit of Phobos lead many scientists to believe that it was indeed hollow. Russian astrophysicist Iosif Samuilovich Shklovsky, did a study on the secular acceleration of the orbital patterns of Phobos in 1958. This showed that Phobos was incredibly light, and one calculation yielded a hollow iron sphere 16 kilometres (9.9 miles) across but less than 6 cm thick. Unfortunately, many data errors were found in Shklovsky's calculations, and the theory was trashed. Recently though, mapping by the Mars Express probe and subsequent volume calculations do suggest the possible presence of vast caverns within the moon and indicate that it is not a solid chunk of rock but a porous body instead. Even if it isn't exactly hollow, wouldn't an incredibly pourous substance be easier to destruct than a solid one?
Any comments expressing your love and hate are appreciated, feel free to challenge any one of the above theories with your own expertise.

There are some facts to disprove the Phobos to Marathon conversion, but we can't help but to wonder.

You make some interesting points Super Theta. I never took the time to consider details on both Phobos and Deimos. I think the picture of Deimos looks like the Marathon. Here is a larger image of the UESC Marathon taken from the beginning of Pfhor Your Eyes Only... The primary feature that makes the Marathon look more like Phobos is the large crater on the left side in the image you posted. However it doesn't look like the Marathon has that crater. The Marathon's propulsion system looks like a crater, but it isn't a crater. The distance from Sol to Tau Ceti is a contradiction I've pondered quite often. I've always thought that it could be an error on the part of Bungie. However my cynical side doesn't trust everything that Leela says. She could be damaged or could even be lying to the SO about the time required to send the light speed message from Tau Ceti to Sol.
Posted by: Guscon As I remember it, were both Phobos and Deimos not turned into transport ships? There were a few of them operating in the solar system, but they proved expensive to maintain, and as the economic climate went south thy fell into disuse. The Marathon was re-fitted out as a colony ship, and sent off to Tau Ceti, in an effort to give the government something to point to as a success. I'm afraid I can't find where I picked that up from, and may even be confusing Marathon's backstory with another IP :)
Guscon you are confusing the CRIST Sol orbiters with the Marathon. However you're recollection of the CRISTs is excellent. The story of the CRISTs can be found in Couch Fishing Term 2. The CRISTs were large transport ships used to move supplies and resources between Earth and Mars. They were extremely expensive to maintain. Each CRIST took 15 years to repair and refit and "completely occupied the Earth-Space Shipbuilding Facility for that time". During the Marathon's construction turning it into a CRIST was a popular idea among the Martian citizens, but the UESC never considered it a possibility. The Marathon was never re-fitted. It was always intended to be a colony ship. No transforation of Phobos is ever mentioned in Marathon. However it is doubtful that any transformation took place considering the tremendous cost of the Marathon conversion and the unstable social and economic state of Mars at the time of the Marathon's construction and launch.

I'm not so sure about both moons being converted. There were, however, large man-made cargo ships that fit the description of disuse and expensiveness in the Marathon story.
