Canonically, how many Guardians are there?
It feels like it has to be a number far smaller than the player count. If there were millions of us, I find it hard to believe that anything could reasonably threaten the City.
I know I'm missing a fair few Grimoire cards, so I may have simply not run into the answer yet if there is one.

I think are player is a special more powerful type of guardian, and most aren't as strong.

You see, the problem isn't in the number of guardians; there are quite a few of us but many if not most are only guardians part time. We have full time jobs and are only able to guard the wall and patrol in the evening or on weekends. And then there's the infighting betwixt us. Makes the overall number seem much smaller.

1 ReplyWell I don't have any hard proof to back this up but I would think that there can't be more than a couple thousand of us currently (with more obviously existing in the past). I draw this conclusion from the fact that there aren't any quotes/ dialog that I can remember that talks about mass amounts of Guardians (except for those in the past during things like the Twilight Gap, Six Fronts, and the Moon) in the present. Also (and this is totally subjective) but each Guardian in my mind is sort of a demigod/legendary hero...immortal (so long as they have their light/ghost) and capable of godlike power. Their actions are momentous and even a simple fire team of them can end up becoming legends throughout the city (let alone armies of them like the Titan Orders). Also, upon the passing of a single one it is a BIG deal and it takes a whole hell of a lot to actually kill us. Because of all that I don't think there really could be that many of us or we would be kicking a lot more ass than we already are. However I do think it is important to note that there ARE in fact new guardians being "born". I draw this from the quest dialog you can see from your "level up your light to 40" quest where your mentor tells you they were talking to some new guardians about you and your legendary feats.

Well we know that a lot died when they went to take on Croata, and in other battles. Even so I agree that there would be a small number in the hundreds

I'd guess in the 1000's. My reasoning is: 1. The first cutscene that shows the tower and the last cutscene that shows the tower in Vanilla Destiny, we see some Guardians hanging around and listening to the Speakers speech. This is unlikely the majority of Guardians. 2. Zavala, Cayde, and Ikora occasionally come over the intercom announcing fireteams (which can have up to 6), looking for Guardians that haven't reported in yet, or reprimanding Guardians. 3. Gear makes references to Guardians that don't have a name. 4. Grimoire cards make references to unnamed Guardians. 5. Civilians can't believe all the Guardians they see on the Tower. This probably means there's quite a bit coming through. 6. We had the numbers to assault Crota's base. While a lot died, I think quite a bit made it back. 7. Several massive battles that involve Guardians.

5 RepliesIt depends. The timeline is convoluted in Destiny. Maybe there are thousands in one timeline, but only hundreds in another.

We have no concrete numbers, but based on what we'd know I'd say probably a couple thousand. Maybe as many as a little over ten thousand. Remember that the guardians are only a portion of the City's overall military, which in turn is only a portion of the overall population of Earth, which is so small it all fits within the walls of a single city.
