Halo vs. Killzone

Let me ask something here. There is plenty of trash talk towards killzone whenever it's brought up. I played Killzone years ago. I avoided reviews and went in blindly and I loved the campaign. When certain characters died I was actually heartbroken. The intense center of the battlefield theme was intense and I loved it. It provided more of a challenge than most shooters and it's gameplay was unique. Killzone multiplayer is where I have some of my most fond multiplayer memories. I had SO much fun in Killzone multiplayer. What I always see is "LOL Sony think they can kill HALOOOO LLOOLOOLOL Halo has the best campaigns in all of gaming XBOX MASTERRAAAACE. KILLZONE IS SHIIIIIIT" (you'd be surprised, some people actually said it that immaturely. So I went and played Halo and I can't help but feel like the campaign is missing so many essential parts. Good narrative, good cinematics, dialogue, good characters, lots of things. Halo CE was cringeworthy. One of my least favorite shooters actually. The only good part I found in it was the vehicles and the beginning of the campaign, then the campaign just slowly dies throughout the game. I played Halo Reach which was better but still lacking in certain areas. I can't help but feel bored in the Halo campaigns when there's nothing but very long gameplay shooting segments with no narrative to progress the story other than dialogue from Cortana or anyone else on the comms (THIS IS WHY I HATE DESTINY'S CAMPAIGN). In Killzone there's the occasional voice on the comms but most of the time your people are WITH YOU on the battlefield fighting by your side screaming and shouting at you over the gunfire, it just makes it more immersive and progressed the story more. So my question is this: If Halo has so little cutscenes and dialogue and very little characterization with one of the most cardboard of cardboard characters with very little to progress the actual story other than shooting shit, how is it sooo much better than every other shooter out there? How does it have "the best story in gaming"? This is exactly what Killzone Shadow Fall was and it sucked when compared to its predecessors. It had a cardboard character (although he talks more than Chief), less memorable characters, more comm chatter to replace 3rd person cutscenes, etc. I want to like Halo because it has an intriguing universe but each time I try it, it just feels like Bungie/343 is missing out on fleshing out the universe IN THE GAME and would rather just publish books, which is ok, but the lore needs to be IN THE GAME. Look at Dragon Age Inquisition. IT has such an expansive codex for the lore and such a deep universe I couldn't take myself away from it. I was expecting a similar feeling to Halo but I'm still waiting for it. So what makes Halo's campaign "so great"? I can't figure it out. I haven't played the multiplayer and frankly I can't because I'm borrowing a friend's Xbox and it's not mine to make an account on and all that jazz. He wants it back the exact way he gave it to me as. So multiplayer is out of this contrast This is not a console hating post, this is simple comparing/contrasting and a simple question. You like Halo's campaign? tell me why. You hate Killzone? Tell me why. That's all. If anyone is about to comment something along the lines of "LOL SONY PONY PEASANT" let me say that I loved Gears of War. It's one of my FAVORITE shooters ever actually. No lie, I -blam!-ing loved it (except the first one, it was kinda meh). Gears 2 and 3 are just amazing. Now COMMENT

  • I completely agree with you on Halo CE. Most of it just doesn't hold up anymore in its old age. It was however, legendary in its time. Please play 2 and especially 3 though. Anniversary edition of 2 has absolutely stunning cutscenes. And Halo 3 is just simply amazing.

  • I played the last Killzone and beat it on it's hardest difficulty setting like I do in Halo. Killzone is a nice game series with good graphics and a nice story. and it's multiplayer is fun. However, it can't touch Halo on it's best day. Halo just does everything better than most FPSs. Better gun play/game play, better and deeper story with a gazillion books, way better music (at least when they had Marty), the most competitive FPS multiplayer on console (excluding H4), better and more features like Forge, Theater, and Firefight (coming soon in H5), and a cult following as crazy as Star Wars fans. Just saying.. it's like comparing a Honda Civic to a Ferrari. Both are nice cars and great to own, but come on man, the Ferrari is just plain better.

    • Is isn't even really know Killzone was a thing until recently, despite being a PlayStation player in general. A couple years ago I picked yore trilogy. I thought it'd be fun after I played the Resistance trilogy. But I had a hard time getting into it. I got Killzone 4 for $6 during a Black Friday sale. The game was beautiful, yet awkward and I really couldn't decide how anything in the plot made sense. Hopefully if I ever manage to finish the first 3, I'll have some idea of why things are the way they are in those games. I mean, I read the wiki, but it still made no sense. I didn't know about all the "halo-killer" drama Sony was pushing either. If anything it seems more like it was aimed at Gears Of War, but FPS. I dunno, it's a strange game (world). Anyway, I'm not agreeing or disagreeing here. But I do agree that Halo started off pretty slow and got weird as it went along. But I guess it was no stranger than Mass Effect or any other early 2000s pre-grimdark sci-fi genre.

        • Dude. You need to state in this post that you haven't played 2 and 3. You claim that there is no story, those are where your story is. You can't make an argument if you don't know what your arguing against.

Lol I love Kill Zone 2 and liked 3 but there is no competition as Halo is superior to Kill Zone in every way. As I own all the Halo's and have played all the Kill Zone's to date I am best placed to say that. Besides you have only played Halo CE anniversary and now apparently Reach so you are not best placed to comment, let alone your obvious Sony fanboyism.

            • Or instead of being a grumpy guss we could like both. It's so weird watching people try to attack another series because it's somewhat similar and on the other console.

            • Killzone 2 and 3 are the only truly good titles in the Killzone series. And i hate Halo CE with a burning passion, but every single title has been spectacular in one way or another. That and Halo feels more unique then Killzone but this is just opinion.

            • The way you say halo has no story or development just makes it sound like you didn't actually play the campaigns. Chief doesn't need to explain himself every time he does something bad ass that doesn't make him cardboard that makes him a real bad ass. Also saying combat evolved was cringeworthy is worth you getting your gamer card yanked

As an Xbox player, I hadn't heard much about the Killzone franchise until I went over to a friend's house one day and saw Shadow Fall on his shelf of games. I was intrigued by this game I hadn't heard about and we played through the campaign. The visuals are amazing and the PS4's ability with graphics really shines. The gun designs are also really unique and cool. That's about it for good things that I noticed. The AI is really dumb. The protagonist is extremely forgettable. The story overall is just underwhelming. Maybe it's the worst in the franchise. I don't know. But I didn't like it at all. As for your criticisms of Halo. Do you have any actual evidence for Halo CE being "cringeworthy"? Because it is one of the most praised games ever made. Halo 2 was one of the first (I think the first) games with online PVP. Halo 3, my personal favorite. It was such a satisfying end to an amazing story. With interesting characters, extensive lore, epic set pieces, and an absolutely iconic score, Halo is and always will be one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time. I don't know what turned you off on it, but almost no one looks at Halo in the way that you do (except maybe COD fanboys).
The fact that Chief doesn't talk very much doesn't make him an uninteresting character. In my opinion, and in the opinion of many others, it makes him more so.
• Sorry for not reading text wall first I absolutely loved Kill Zone 3 But the main problem with the series is it was conceived in an era when every FPS hopeful was trying to be a "Halo Killer" Much like the Resistance franchise, Kill Zone was trying to go toe to toe with the MS giant instead of focusing on trying to make a name for itself. As a result Kill Zone lost so much of its own identity. And that's coming from Mr PS4LIFE

                  • Halo is better imho I played both all the way through and Halo was more original imo Killzone seemed very similar to lost planet and kinda Wolfensteinish with the whole tyranny thing. Halo was like, religious aliens that breath farts attack and zombie parasite infect every dead body on the battle field making you watch your back at every turn!! Plus Marty did such an amazing job with the music its hard for Killzone to live up to the orchestral genius. I did like the controls more in Killzone, and the cool gadgets But halo had an awesome variety of vehicles that were iconic. In the end, Halo had better theming, music and just story overall that left a better impact than Killzone. But hey, thats just my opinion lol

                  • Tl:dr. I've only played kill zone 3 and sf. I loved them both. I thought they were great games. Halo, I've only played here or there whenever I was at a friends house, and I wasn't a huge fan. The whole halo v kz thing is lost on me. I know when kz first came out it was advertised as a halo killer. It obviously wasnt, but it's a great game by itself.

Stopped reading when you said Halo CE's campaign was cringe worthy. I haven't played much of the Killzone franchise but from what I've played I haven't been impressed. Terrible AI and terrible level design in the campaign. Mediocre shooter for the most part but I've heard Killzone 2 was pretty good (Which I haven't played). I'm not sure if you actually expierenced Halo CE when it initially launched but it did so much. For its time it had some of the best AI, huge levels with a very long campaign, amazing physics and very extensive lore. The game also revolutionized FPS controllers for consoles and Local Play. As far as I'm concerned, Killzone didn't revolutionize shit. I don't really think you know what you're talking about when it comes to Halo.

I remember you saying that you hated GoW 1, but you loved 2 and 3. I think you'd be the same way towards Halo. In my opinion, Halo CE was my least favorite out of the trilogy. That's how it usually is with games because they end up getting better and better. Halo 2 and 3 are kinda tied for me. If I were you, I'd play Halo 2 and 3. I think you'd enjoy them. Halo 4 also has an amazing story (in my opinion) but I recommend you play 2 and 3 first :)

                        • I remember you giving race reviews of halo 2-3. CE after you beat it you came to complain without factoring how old it was. Now when your fav game is targeted you take back some feelings? Ok. Never played killzone but I have never seen anyone really praise the games. I think they say (shadow fall?) was terrible. Also I believe killzone is more like gears no? Gears should be your comparison because (especially the first one) wanted a "cinematic" story. In gears you have delta squad and others follow you everywhere and some of those AI you fought with will die.

I just hated The Flood. It just seemed like the entire idea of Combat Evolved was about taking FPS in a different direction, away from dumb bullet sponges that are just content run at you, and towards a more tactical thinking enemy. The Flood is anathema to what appeared to be what set Halo apart. Reach was my favourite of the series. As for Gears of War, it is my favourite shooter series.
