Jackal
I heard a shuffling noise beside me and I forced my eyes to open. They did but ever so slowly.
“Alright, get up buddy. Time kill some Copperhead thingies.” Bear was standing above me. I groggily remembered a strange dream about Europa and a wolf or something. With a flash memories flooded back to me. The ice, the Copperheads, Wolf. I sat up and rubbed the sleepiness out of my eyes. When I opened them, Wolf was standing above me.
“Get dressed Warlock. We’re headed out.” Her voice was cold as the ice beneath our feet. I had the sense that Wolf was not, a morning person. I grabbed my armour and put it onto the skin tight suit I wore beneath it. My helmet lay on it’s side where I had tossed it last night. I walked over to it and picked it up. The gold along the sides ran upwards to form an intricate feather pattern. The symbol etched into the back with black onyx was cold from a night in this freezing cave. I had found this helmet in a hidden room on a mission Bear and I had gone to. The idea was simple. Slay the gatelord. How were we supposed to know there was more than one? How were we supposed to know that was where the vex were building a new weapon? How were we supposed to know it was ready to be used? How were we supposed to know? How was Hawk supposed to know? We had walked in ready to kill a gatelord. We had been slaughtered. From the landing I had known something was wrong…
“Oh my god. Hurry up you two. You are sooo slow.” Hawk was standing at the top of a hill. I was running up to the top with Bear a little ways behind.
“Oh shut up Hawk. Just because you can run faster than us doesn’t give you the right to mess with us.” I grinned. Being a bladedancer, Hawk was extraordinarily fast and agile. Being a titan, Bear was not. I was somewhere in the middle.
“Uh, actually I think it does.” Hawk flashed a quirky grin. He was always doing that.
“There, you happy?” I said as I made it to the top of the hill. A few seconds later Bear got to the top.
“Wow. Breathtaking isn’t it.” He said as he stared out across the landscape of Venus. The crumbling buildings and dense undergrowth gave the appearance of life taken and reclaimed. It really was beautiful.
“Yup, totally pretty. Alright? We good? Great let’s go.” Always itching for the next fight, Hawk slid down the steep incline of the hill. I jumped and slowly descended to the ground.
“Light as a feather huh? Okay twinkle-toes, have a nice flight?” Hawk flashed that grin again. With a thud Bear landed next to me.’What are we doing standing around talking. Let’s get going.” Both Hawk and I glared at him.
“What?” Bear, genuinely confused, threw up his hands in question. Ignoring him, Hawk and I slid our helmets onto our heads and summoned our sparrows. Bear did the same. With a swoosh we blasted forward zipping towards the gate lord. Zipping towards fate.
A single tear drop fell onto the helmet as I sat there reminiscing. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up to see Wolf there.
“You alright?” Gone was the animosity of earlier. Gone was the haughty attitude she had had the night before. I could hear real concern in her voice. It was faint, barely noticeable. But it was there. I began to think there might be more to Wolf than a tough guardian with a pretty face.
“Yeah I’m fine. Let’s go.” I pulled on my helmet and walked away. I blinked the water out of my eyes that threatened to become a tear drop. I didn’t normally lose myself like that, but when it comes to Hawk… well, it’s best not to think about it. I walked up behind Bear as he pulled on his helmet. He turned to me and I heard his voice over the radio waves in my helmet.
“Are you ready?” With a nod I affirmed,
“Ready as I’ll ever be.”
“Copy cat.”
“Did you just say that? I didn’t know you were four.” I felt the unmistakable tone of humour edge its way into my voice. Bear, being the blunt one didn’t catch it.
“Oh come on, why you gotta be like that?”
“I’m just…” With a start I realized Wolf was standing right next to us. I hadn’t even realized it.
“You two done or am I gonna be waiting here a while longer?”
“We’re done mam.” Bear turned and saluted. Wolf raised an eyebrow and put on her helmet. She put each of her hands on our shoulders and said,
“Mam, I like that.” Then we were off into the void. This time I payed more attention to my surroundings. We were falling forward. I saw something flash by. It was two guardians in the tower surrounded by other guardians. Another image flashed by. It was of the same two guardians talking with the Vanguard. Another flashed by, it was of those two guardians on mars taking out cabal. More and more images flashed by. All of those two guardians. They were on mars, then the moon, Earth, Venus. Suddenly I realized who those guardians were. They were me and Bear. The void was showing us the past. There was me, on venus staring at… oh no. This was where it had happened. Where Hawk had… had… no. I couldn’t think about it. Suddenly Wolf stepped out of the void and into the harsh wintry landscape of Europa. I was breathing hard. A memory came to mind.
“Don’t let the shadow of the past eclipse your future.” Where did that come from. I shook my head to clear my disturbing thoughts and stood up from where I had fallen.
“Alright. I’m receiving no scans of sentient life but that really doesn’t mean anything. They could just be on the other side of the void waiting to strike.” She looked up to see dark clouds rolling in. “Looks like there’s a storm brewing. Let’s move.” Bear and I followed Wolf into the white expanse of jupiter’s moon.
