• To become a game tester you don't find them. they find you At least thats how I became a game tester. My resume somehow got in the companies hands and they wanted me. It's been a great job coming right out of college, especially the way the economy is. A lot of the responses in here are from people who have never been in a testing position before. It's not as awful as they make it seem if you are working for a prestigious company. Smaller companies yes, but not my working environment at all. [Edited on 12.08.2011 6:04 PM PST]

 • I know a lot of this already. It's a 8 hour job 4 hours testing and 4 hours writing about all the bugs in the game for another 4 hours. But I also know if I do this I will be more likely to be able to be hired by a gaming company. My current plan is in high school start becoming a video game tester. Then go here. Then when finish getting my bachelor work for a gaming company. Th3n i sh@ll h@z lulz!!!1!!!11

 • Depends on what you mean by "game tester". Development companies have testing departments that consist of experienced programmers who work (very tedious) at identifying breaks and bugs, and logging the results. Some dev's/publishers will hire out random people for beta/release tests, but my understanding is that this is a dying practice due to many gamers being more than happy to volunteer such services.

 •
Posted by: ultratog1028Really? You want to go play games you have no choice in choosing, that are broken, and that everytime they break you must fill out several pages worth of how you broke it and what happened while being paid little money? Sounds awesome.
Just to play the devils advocate, it's not too bad to compared to bagging groceries for the same pay. Minimum wage jobs in general inherently aren't that great.

Well you're hired!!
Unless it's that one company I worked for that monitors your physiological activity while you play. I even got to play an alpha or beta version of a couple games. But you could only work 2 hours a week. = /

 • Step 1: Get a Bachelor of Computer Science. Step 2: Apply to a development studio.

 •
Posted by: Hylebos From what I've heard game testing is pretty hellish. Lots of hours spent throwing your body at a certain wall in a certain level trying to reproduce an obscure bug, then trying to figure out what causes said bug so it can be fixed.
Yep, I remember in the BTS on Oblivion he said "I had to open the menu, on every single point on the map, throw every item at every other item, kill everything, jump everywhere, crouch everywhere... and the game still came out with a ton of bugs!"

Go to their websites and read their job descriptions. Try to get a job there. If not, try to get a job at a small and/or indie game company. *shoots arrow*

 • You don't need programming experience to do QA(Quality Assurance). There aren't any online applications for most developers/publishers so you have to be assertive and go the company you want to work for essentially. All you really need is fairly good communications skills and a lot of patience.

 • Games testing isn't really that fun either. Often a lot of doing the same thing over and over. EDIT: Beaten to it D:! [Edited on 12.08.2011 4:05 PM PST]
