According to multiple sources, in the months leading up to E3, Sony nixed plans to include the camera add-on with every system and shave $100 off its originally planned price of $499. Most importantly, it did so quietly, informing its retail partners only of the removal of the camera, not specifying the lower price so as not to tip its hand to Microsoft.
But in its efforts to undercut the Xbox One, Sony has damned the accessory to a future of fragmented consumer adoption and inconsistent software support. The decision has also rendered a major design element of the DualShock 4 controller — the built-in LED Move tracker — largely useless.
Microsoft's decision to bundle a Kinect with each Xbox One and require it for use may be unpopular, but it guarantees that every user will have the option to try Kinect-enabled games and experiences. For developers, it means that Kinect integration is no longer a costly gamble on a small subsection of Xbox owners — motion-detecting and voice-sensing elements can be anything from a small optional game enhancement or the primary control method.
By relegating the camera to a $59.99 add-on, Sony has ensured the opposite — a climate of codependency wherein PlayStation 4 camera adoption will hinge upon compelling software, but compelling software will only arrive after PlayStation 4 camera adoption.
What's worse, the DualShock 4's integrated LEDs are now good for little more than visual flair. Per Sony, the light-up panels will help indicate the player associated with each controller and, when supported, react to in-game cues, such as blinking red when a player is low on health. Ultimately, the limited functionality of the LEDs without the aid of the Eye won't impact the player experience or even drastically diminish the overall battery life of the controller, but it's a lingering reminder of Sony's failure to support the tech.
I like the choice. Motion control gaming is a novelty at best. I've had a Wii since they came out and all it really does is collect dust. The only use it gets is arcade tennis and bowling when company is over and we've been drinking. Since the only games I play with frequency are shooters and RPGs, motion sensing does nothing for me. I would never buy or use the camera add on for a Playstation or Xbox. So I'm glad they can save me $100 by not forcing me to buy something I will never want. Also, This patent application still bugs me. If I don't have a camera, they cannot force content viewing restrictions and fees on me by sensing how many people are at my house watching a movie.

The ps4 is 100 dollars cheaper than the xbone. DEAL WITH IT. Xbots, either buy a ps4, or don't, but you look retarded when you hate on sony for making all the right moves.

Good it was a shit gimmick just like Kinect.

58 отв.This is a solid reason why I am not a Sony fan right now. They've spent this entire year Post-Xbox One trying to smear MS instead of giving us reasons to buy PS4. What was Microsoft's biggest E3 moment? I would guess all the games. What was Sony's biggest E3 moment? Easily when they announce no DRM/salvation of used games. Well guess what? That moment is over for them. That point is moot now, because all consoles this gen function that way. You've gotta ask yourself why Sony waited so long to reveal that information. The answer is, they were on the fence, and seeing MS flop with their DRM, they took the opportunity to take rapid-fire shots. That is all Sony has done, is run a smear campaign against MS. Don't get me wrong, when the first announced the PS4, I was blown away by the streaming feature. I was telling my friends that I was going to wind up getting all my multiplatform games on PS4, but lo and behold, Microsoft has that feature as well on the Xbox One, and Sony has spent so much time attacking the Xbox One, they haven't introduced a single feature that would make me want to buy their console. Microsoft is surrounded by controversy, but at least they're trying to do things differently. At least they're trying to take steps forward, even if they were clumsy, and horrible marketed. I could sum up Sony's information on the PS4 with "It has better graphics, and -blam!- YOU XBOX!". So I get this isn't exactly on the topic of Kinect, but it does pertain to how Sony is willing to compromise just about anything to take a shot at Microsoft. They're really pushing for a strong launch, but post-holiday season, when the XO and the PS4 are out, the consoles are gonna speak for themselves, and I get the feeling most people are gonna like the XO more than the PS4.

3 отв.Изменено (Gi Bad Dog): 6/27/2013 6:44:40 PMI really don't understand some people. I do understand that you don't think the Eye and Kinect are worth it but its really the future. personally am getting an Xbox due to the fact my friends and I have all decided to get it. Am I disappointed with the price? Not really, was really expecting $600 price tag. Did i previously own a Eye or Kinect? No. But am I mad that I have to pay a little extra money to get one, nope. I really believe that this is going to be such a large feature in the near future. That so many ideas and abilities will be opened up through these systems. If you look at the life-span of a console. I'd say this upcoming gen is about 10 years if not more. That is alot of time for technology to evolve. Take a look at smartphones. I remember 8 years ago when BlackBerry were the big things and all they really could do was send email easily. Now all these phones are so powerful, and Siri on the IPhone couldn't be bigger. I believe that the Kinect will bring Xbox to new levels of gaming while the PS4 will be kinda lagging behind since everyone will not have a PS Eye. With how technology has been advancing, you can't really sit back and say that these accessories are useless.

Playstation 4 = Superior Hardware, Cheaper Price, Consistent Game Developer Praise vs Handful Defending Xbox One, and Exclusive Content for Bungie's Destiny. Sony = Win No TiVo for me.

1 ответI could care less about motion control and cameras and things like that. Still seems pointless and gimmicky for any gamer.
-
A gimmick will never grow past a gimmick if it isn't explored more first. The Kinect was only out for a short time before the new Kinect was made. In that time it seems that Microsoft made a massive leap in that technology. Technology evolves quickly. Frankly, I want to be part of what is to come and I truly believe the Kinect can help propel gaming and home entertainment towards the future. As lame as that may sound.
-
10 отв.Fun fact: the xbone is only $20 more than the 360 was at launch.
-
15 отв.Hooray for not having pay for unnecessary features!

10 отв.Okay, time to clear away a lot of nonsense. An implicit assumption in all of these discussions is that the Eye has the same functionality as the Kinect. Unlike MS, Sony did not integrate the Eye into the heart of their interface (for better or worse). This means that the Eye, by definition, is an accessory and not an integral component of the console. MS, arguably, has made a bold decision by integrating Kinect in the heart of the console's interface, and this is why they have included it in the package for the One, but the fact remains that Sony's system is EQUALLY functional without the Eye since it never depended on it in the first place.
-
Playstation Move and the Playstation Eye really did suck a pig's pucker hole. Even on first party implementation with games like Killzone 3 and Resistance 3, it was all sorts of terrible. So I'm not pouring a 40 to lament the loss. And if they can cut it on a whim, developers probably weren't using it.
-
So I don't have to buy something I don't want and the console is cheaper because of it. HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO US SONY? HOW ELSE WILL I TAKE UP MORE SPACE THAN I NEED TO?????
-
1 ответI am one of many who really don't care about a camera and an extra voice command or motion gesture for controls. Controllers do the job just fine, rather save some money.
-
Uh.....I am in the EXACT same camp with those who don't give a fly fig for the Eye......Sony.....Choice is always better than force feeding...bravo
-
DAMN THEM! DAMN THEM TO HELL! I really wanted to buy something I didn't want.
-
Good move. MS should back paddle again.
-
As a person who will never, ever use the Kinect or Eye, I am totally okay with this.
-
1 ответSony have cut out a pointless feature that would stay in the box for me and I save some money as well. Thanks Sony.
-
Изменено (BerzerkCommando): 6/27/2013 11:44:03 AMI see nothing wrong with this. It would have been an extra charge that jacks up the price for something I'm not going to use. Unless you get games that are designed for it I find it pretty damn useless. That thing would be useless for me when I'm playing games like Battlefield, Call of Duty, GTA and Halo. The only non move/Kinect games I can see it being interesting in are sword games like Elder Scrolls. For the move you can use that Wii controller for the sword and for the Kinect you can buy a Nerf sword to use for the melee weapons.

so I don't have to buy useless gimmicks that just ramp up the price and lag the console even further with the useless shovelware? HOW DARE SONY LOSE THIS KEY FEATURE THAT WOULD TOTALLY GIVE THEM AN EDGE! MICROSOFT WINS BECAUSE THEY MAKE YOU PAY GOR SHOVELWARE AND GIMMICKS THAT YOU DON'T NEED! GG SONY! /sarcasm so obvious you'd have to be illiterate to be unable to tell.
-
Anyone who's seen Man of Steel knows that the future is: opening doors with Kinect gestures.
-
1 ответI have a feeling that now that Sony has made PS Eye optional multi-platform games will make motion controls an optional gimmick to make porting easier. Basically we'll probably only see true integration of the Kinect on Xbox exclusives.

5 отв.The dual shock 4 also has a click-able touch pad which the Xbox One controller doesn't so can we argue about that for awhile?
