Because the burden of proof lies on the religious people.
If someone claims that he or she is carrying an elephant around in the pocket of their pants, then who needs to prove what?
It's not up to the random bystander to prove that the person making that claim does not have an elephant in its pocket. It's up to the person making the statement to back it up and prove he's right somehow.
I can claim that I'm actually president Obama. For anyone to believe me, it's up to me to prove that I actually am him. Not up to others to prove that I'm not.

I consider the very fact that the universe exists is proof enough. Every material thing has an origin. It did not just happen spontaneously.
-
True, every material thing has an origin and an explanation behind it. That is a very obvious and logical assumption. To assume that this is because of "God", however, is far from as evident, and does not in any way remove the burden of proof on your end.
-
Do you agree that some unknown event caused the universe to form? (The Big Bang being the most widely accepted theory.)

Изменено (RIP delta): 4/11/2013 5:25:01 PMYou'd be dumber than a rock if you didn't agree with the assertion you just made - obviously something happened, but 'something from nothing' most certainly isn't a compelling argument for a Deity coz it would also have had to have happened to said deity too.
-
Unless the deity is the creator of everything. If the diety were created, then it wouldn't be a deity. The being that created the deity would be the real deity.
-
But the conundrum still exists. You can't ask where one originates while shrugging off the origins of the other. So the Universe has a beginning. If a Deity is responsible, simply stating that they simple 'have been' for all of eternity is a mere reflection of the answer you refute about the Universe's origins. It is a double standard of arguably the biggest proportion ever.
-
Time is the measure of intervals between events. So time started with the first event ever, the creation of the universe or the event that lead to the creation of the universe. It can be said God is beyond time because he exists before the first event. So saying God had a beginning is pointless because then he wouldn't be God.
-
Which is an answer most politicians would be very happy about. If time started with the starting of the Universe, then why couldn't the elements that caused its being also be beyond time? Claiming that something extraordinary happened means you can't say something similar couldn't equally have happened thus. Besides, time is a dimension, not just something that is used to say how far between two events occurred.
