Disclaimer: I’m fully aware that micro transactions are a huge point of contention for a lot of the player base that has left (me) or is going to leave (me again if I can’t get my fenrir’s bane armor ornaments for the walking gjallarhorn character I’ve been fine-tuning for a decade now) so please keep that in mind before leaving a ton of negative comments with zero constructive criticism. Grab a coffee, and just pretend you’re in a board meeting trying to figure out how to balance player engagement with steady income, because it IS a live service game, and the dev team’s gotta eat. That being said, none of these ideas are meant to detract from desired gameplay improvements. We can have both, and this is about generating revenue that would hopefully be allocated to making those improvements you want.
This idea focuses on a few key improvements. The first and largest: FOMO (fear of missing out, for those who still have that little spark of hope in their eyes) and a way to replace that with incentive. Many cosmetics have been put into the eververse and were removed not long after. Many players, myself included, still want these items and are willing to toss a few more bucks to grab them. The obvious move here would be to just complete the archive, and return EVERY SINGLE ONE of the cosmetics that were removed from the eververse. Weapon and armor ornaments, shaders, ships, sparrows, ghost shells and projections, all of it.
Incentive is the next needed focus. Why would I buy these things? How could I? Cycling through items and sets being discounted is how. Suddenly, people might think “well if I’m gonna get it, might as well do it now” or maybe even “well it’s discounted and I’ve been curious, might as well grab this flashy shader set” which would just be more money than bungie would have made otherwise (bungie, that part was for you. WINK WINK) and suddenly, more people can build their cool dream guardian that they’ve always wanted but couldn’t make because they were off having life saving surgery when the item was available. Maybe make it a whole week long event once every other season where cosmetics and silver are discounted, with free commemorative shaders, emblems, and emotes when certain thresholds are met by supporters. This would generate a ton of revenue from the game.
The best part of these ideas, is that all of the things to be implemented already exist, and would only need to be re-added to the market. It should be as easy as flipping a switch. Rather than FOMO, we have incentive to buy, and I can finally have my iron banner ghost shell projections and the Fenrir’s Bane titan armor set (you hear that, bungie? I got a crisp $50 right here. that’s legal tender. Fifty. Whole. U.S. dollars. That could be your $50 cash, in your pocket. All I need is my armor ornaments and ghost shell projections. Easy money, come on bungie.)
Incentivized, not pressured, into spending will make more in the long run, and could help restore a little faith in the company. Maybe not fully, but you gotta start somewhere, and being more consumer friendly is, at the very least, a good start. Give players a reason to spend money on your game, and not someone else’s game.
