Lots of great games out there. You are just focusing on two franchises that have stagnated, and were on a downward trajectory LONG before this console generation....and you're own situation isn't allowing much time for gaming.
THIS is the Golden Age of Gaming.

Изменено (sfeermeneer): 1/7/2020 11:09:01 AMYou forgot a few like monster hunter world(iceborne) devil may cry 5 Destiny (not the best but I played it a lot) Outer worlds The binding of Isaac Hollow knight Shovel knight. But I get your point. And indeed there were a lot of good/great games released this generation. Edit : almost forgot bloodborne, cuphead and ori.
THIS is the Golden Age of Gaming.
I want to agree, but I'd hope next gen is even better.
but I'd hope next gen is even better.
Same. My point is that it is better than anything that went before. But there is always room improvement. :))

Can we call it a tie with PS2 era? I liked the PS2...

Most of the games you posted I don’t like. I used the 2 franchises in the OP as examples.

And my point is that its a Five Blind Men and the Elephant situation. The issue isn't the lack of good games. The issues is your personal taste in gaming being incompatible with trends in gaming, and the slow demise of the arena shooter. Halo is a dying franchise...and Call of Duty is a stagnating franchise.
The issue isn't the lack of good games. The issues is your personal taste
Here we go with this cop-out answer again.

Not a cop out answer. All the games I listed are praised as excellent games and were critically acclaimed. So this is a personal taste issue. There are good games out there. He jsut doesn't enjoy playing them....and he's self-aware enough to admit that he doesn't like them.

Good games marred by a shift towards profit-centric design philosophies.
-
Which is what allows these games to be made. The developers are running businesses.....not charities. When you don't make money making video games? PEOPLE STOP GIVING YOU MONEY TO MAKE THEM. They take their (investment) money, and they give it to someone ELSE doing SOMETHING else that will make them money. Too many of you act like video games aren't a commercial product and a luxury item. Its like you think its some sort of public good that the world somehow OWES you. It isn't....and it doesn't.

The sort of games OP was talking about (i.e. multiplayer FPS games) have become very profit focused this gen with the inclusion of loot boxes, battle passes etc. But there’s still been plenty of other great games this gen that aren’t like that. For example: God of War The Witcher 3 Horizon Zero Dawn Bloodborne Breath of the Wild Dishonored 2 Dark Souls 3 Spider-Man Sekiro Nier: Automata Uncharted 4 Prey None of those games had exploitative monetary practices (except maybe selling additional DLC). I think OP just doesn’t like games that aren’t multiplayer FPS. So yes it’s a personal taste problem not a “current gen sucks” problem.

You're comparing single player games that either don't produce any signifcant ongoing content, and require no ongoing maintanence....to games that require continual injections of content and constant mainentance. I loved Horizon Zero Dawn. But its "maintainance" included three patches to fix bugs (what few there were). All released in the first month....and then NOTHING until the following year until the Expansion/DLC was released (Frozen Wilds). That content got TWO patches...and then nothing else. That is a PITTANCE compared to the level of maintenance and service that people have come to expect from shooters and other multiplayer online games.....and that level of service isnt' FREE. Because thepeople who work to provide it don't work for FREE.
